I really like the flanged tones that Al Di Meola got on Casino and Elegant Gypsy. It is a bit more subtle, but the lines and phrases have more texture and fluidity.
I like using a flanger in both clean and dirty (overdrive, distortion, fuzz) contexts. I would have to say I predominantly use a flanger playing (but not exclusively) Van Halen tunes. Atomic Punk is a cool use of an MXR-type flanger.

Would also really LOVE an A/B comparison between the PastFx ’Hot for Flanger’ pedal and an original late 70’s MXR Flanger (with Reticon chip etc). The extra features on the PastFx make for a super versatile Flanger. That is appreciated now that our backs are getting older and our boards are getting more compact… But, the real test for my pedal board would be how close it can get to the original old MXR. Favourite song for this type of Flanger? …Has to be ‘And the Cradle Will Rock’. Thanks again. 🤘

Hi there, I am really into pat travers, lifeson, Zappa, summers for flanger tones. My buddy back in school had the MXR and he always got a good sound. He would always pronounce it “flang-er” always having a laugh!
For some reason the prototype I tried had a sweeter sweeping sound or depth to it but the updates including the polarity / positive negative button really make more sounds possible. It's a very complete flanger!! Can't wait to hear the video Jason
I agree about the blue mode of the Waldo switch being a bit more ideal for clean sounds, it's shinier and more mistress like and the red mode is a bit deeper or throatier perhaps. The red mode with negative flagging seems more phaser like and the blue mode is a really nice option whenever you're board of the sound. I think if I had to set and forget I'd pick the blue mode.
Another great video, thanks for sharing. Personally, Unchained by Van Halen is flanger use at its best. That song has so much swagger, and the flanger gives it the perfect amount of kick when engaged. Cheers!
Best song with a Flanger, A Forest by The Cure. I know Robert Smith uses a Boss Flanger live, but in the studio he’s used all sorts, and several tracks on Seventeen Seconds sound like the MXR to me, but probably the rack version.
The Cure are Kings of the flange though Robert Smith has only ever used Boss Pedals. Steve Vai and Prince are two others who only ever used Boss. I'm not trying to be a smartarse, I just think it's a fun fact.
I like to use the flanger in place of a chorus for the most part. But, I also love it as a statement effect (e.g., Van Halen's Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love).
I like flanger as a chorus on clean sounds and that jet plane thing on distorted sounds. Think Walking on the Moon by The Police or Ain‘t talking bout Love by Van Halen.
Electric Wizard's Dopethrone is layered with flanger across a lot of the album. You know you've entered into psychedelic mind transferal once the flanging occurs.
Hey mate, I just use a flanger to try and replicate the "voicings" that I hear, like how the greats use it. It also gets a pretty good "chorus" effect too. You can't get a chorus to sound like flanger, but a flanger can be a chorus (if that makes sense). ✌️🇦🇺
Happy New Year Jason, I can read already here some EVH, Police Barracuda (Heart) and plenty of the Cure amongst others. Whilst The Cure generally would be my first pick, just so many top flanger tracks, most things John McGeoch - Magazine, Siouxsie & the Banchees & PIL) would be my second pick. So, given it's only in more recent years people have started to recognise his innovative guitar style likely due to him being championed by the likes of Frusciante, I'm gonna say.... Love the sound. Always used to think The Cure used chorus and I was shocked to find out it was often a flanger set to be more chorus like.

Billy Duffy from the Cult comes to mind, running his White Falcon through mostly Boss pedals and the BF-2 Flanger.
Running an old DOD FX70 on my board right now. Definitely not packed with features but all noise is good noise.
