  • My how to guide on fitting a Wallas XC Duo cooker/heater. It is a diesel powered hob which turns into a heater by closing the lid. A great addition to a campervan and eliminates the need for a gas tank

    You are right about the instruction manual being vague about the orientation of the exhaust head. Mine is fitted the 'wrong' way round, however it has never been a problem. It makes no difference to function. I can only assume that it is to direct gases to the rear rather than towards the side door or windows. In use it makes no difference as even a slight wind blows the gases in whatever direction you have parked relative to the prevailing wind. I think hooking up to fuel tank is the one really major benefit of this unit which you are missing out on. Just buy some fuel pipe and a vehicle specific sender from butler tecknik. Cheers

    You can use your waste vegetable oil after being filtered with equal amounts of kerosene, since you have a separate fuel tank. The key is to thin the fuel to the same viscosity as diesel. I tested this with a home oil heater. You could use biodiesel made at home too.

      Oh amazing Greg! That sounds like a really cool idea

      HughTube, I also used cooking oil and kerosene in my VW diesel cars. Test my idea in warmer weather, so the oil is already thinner.

      Unless you are doing this to prove a point don't bother. I had an 87D on my yacht and it was amazing. They use so little fuel it makes no sense to try and save pennies and possibly damage something that costs thousands.

    Hi Hugh love the video, it's very helpful. I wonder if you could tell me how hot the exhaust pipe gets? I'm trying to plan the route for it but I'm unsure how close I can have it to electric cables and wood surfaces before it starts to cause heat damage or even a fire.
    Many thanks!

      with the fibreglass sleeve it can be quite close (up to about 50mm I found), although you can even upgrade that further and get one of those fibreglass sleeves with a silicone coating which are great at shielding everything around from the heat

    great job and revised video. Seems like a great piece of kit, but complicated and expensive.

    • @HughTube
      @HughTube  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would agree with expensive but complicated I would disagree. It does simplify multiple systems into one which I think is a great advantage

    Good job buddy, looks to be a good little system. I wonder if the exhaust outlet would be better turned around and pointed towards the underside of the chassis, to help prevent it being easily damaged when going over bumps or rough ground....

    • @HughTube
      @HughTube  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The instructions advise mounting it where it is and it is in such a position that the exhaust would be ripped off before the exhaust head gets touched

    A question and a comment, how do you unscrew the fuel tank lid without twisting all the hoses, and if you spill diesel in your camper the smell will linger for ever, try odorless kerosene to avoid this issue, works the same as diesel.

    Thanks for the video. I have just installed an XC Duo into my van. I am finding my worktop is getting very hot around the front left hand side corner area of the Hob ....... Do you find the same? I'm just checking if its 'Normal'.... Thanks

    Diesel is surprisingly hard to ignite. No where near as flammable as petrol or gas, so you should be fine.

    Thanks for the helpful video. I’m considering getting one of these (trying to avoid gas bottles) ... but I’m wondering if the exhaust smells nasty. I realise it won’t smell inside. But outside the van: would people next to my van experience nasty fumes? Thanks.

    • @HughTube
      @HughTube  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes on startup there is an obvious diesel exhaust smell but this fades as it warms up

    Hi Hugh, I have a question - do you remember how long the intake and exhaust pipes supplied with the xc duo were before you cut them down? I need around 2 metres for my installation

      I've had some bad weeks with mine - injury and the cold dark evenings. We gotta push through that Graham!! :) I split my to do list into easy and hard jobs, so on days like that I can do something tiny, but still knock an item off the list.

      Hey Graham sorry to hear! Whats been going wrong? I would say take a minute have a cuppa and take any tricky jobs and break them down into chunks and attack them that way.

    Great gadget, even with this complex instalations seams much better than gasoline colemam stove, something I didnt understood perhaps the smoke from diesel goes down and out side by the pipes? Strange 'cause the flamme and smoke normaly goes up. Congratulation great job.

    • @HughTube
      @HughTube  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah all the fumes go out on of the pipes, the other draws in fresh air and a fan pumps it all round

    A fortune can be saved on any modern day gadget by looking at how problems where solved in war time Britain researching is easy. I have a item made from a used biscuit tin or baking tin that does the same as your expensive device. It has many adaptations the best is used from a small wood burner flew pipe or even using night light candles. I now use a dutch oven that cost about £35 its a great oven and how I use it to heat my large van is just put broken fire bricks inside. Its so hot on the lowest flame setting that after 20 minutes I turn it off for at least 30 minutes in every hour. Note I only heat my Dutch oven from the bottom as they can be used with charcoal on the lid when using as intended out side your van. Ventilation as with any stove is a must so a carbon monoxide monitor is needed

    Hi Hugh, can I ask how the heater coped during the 'beast from the east'? I'm seriously considering getting one instead of a multi fuel stove, but this is all dependent on if you was still nice and toasty in the minus temperatures.

    • @HughTube
      @HughTube  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Darryl I don't live in the van full time so spent most the beast in the east in a house. But when I used it late last year it was around 0 and the heater was more than comfortable.

    I can't wait for the Chinese to start copy this cooker. I have a Chinese "webasto " airtop heater i bought for £200 while the original webasto costs 800. I really like the idea cooker and heater all in one but £1500 is just overpriced.

    • @HughTube
      @HughTube  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      £1500 is a lot but it is an investment that I feel you will get back when you come to sell

    • @3dmixer552

      Unfortunately, that is not the case. You will never get your money back. And yes it is an investment and hopefully the price will come down

    Which genius designer at Wallas thought it would be a good idea to have all the tubes underneath exit at the front of the unit rather than the much more logical choice of locating them at the rear? Seriously...that is such a poor design choice I couldn't bring myself to buy one now. Space is at a premium and they waste a ton of it with that horrible design? Pass.
