Pestilens was my first Warhammer army back in 2003, I got so into them that I was even the Pestilens mod on the old Fantasy forum for a while! It so cool to see Skaven back in the limelight after so many years, and this video series has been the best way to catch up on all of it. Thank you!
So I used to think that Skaven were originally a creation of Nurgle because of the plague monks but also if you look at the skaven symbol it looks like a styalised symbol of Nurgle. But the skavens belief in the Horned rat created a new god for them to worship, so the horned rat was an offshoot of Nurgle until it broke free and became its own entity.
Very good point, hashut was also belive to be a lesser deamon of khorne, (mainly the deamon that builds khorne war machines) Also in nurgle domain I think there was a place called domain of the 13th lord of decay, so it likely the horn rat serve as a herald in the early days but very likely embodied an idea of horrific illness and not favour concepts such as life and rebirth, just death. Or it likely the horn rat snuck into nurgle garden ate all the compost and nibble on the varouise fruits before scurrying away with knowladge of plagues.
Nah I am 90% convinced the sorcerer who wrecked Tylos and birthed the Skaven was the pre-human sorcerer of the Old World Constant Drachenfels as the Shaper in Skaven lore was described as a member of an elder race and Drachenfels RPG stats said he can speak both the Skaven language and the language of Tylos. He probably did it all as a laugh because he’s sadistic like that and enjoys watching people suffer and the desperation of the people to survive the disaster birthed the Horned rat. The plague abilities of the Skaven was just a side-effect of Pestilens getting hit with a Nurgle plague while invading Lustria. Nurgle tried to subvert the rats in Lustria to his cause which is why the Skaven initially labeled Pestilens as heretics when they first emerged, however the Horned rat saw an opportunity and was able to steal away part of Nurgle’s portfolio as a plague deity and gain some of his disease power probably by feeding off the emotional aspect of the desperation of the infected to try and live despite their disease, their desperation to try and be accepted back into Skaven society despite their condition, and their desperation to try and enlighten the rest of their brethren to the “truth” they had discovered about the Horned Rat. Nurgle while initially being pissed off as the rat turned his plan against him eventually decided that diseases being spread is still a good thing in his eyes and decided to let the rat keep his newly acquired plague powers and that’s why the Skaven and Nurgle groups will occasionally cooperate.
My escape who was attacking my daughter sidious sigmar army have a nice old plague post to it. They have to try to get through to the cheese cap of the mortal realms
