Of course this was to be taken as a joke and mainly said it to any friends who had gone four years and came out with nothing to show for it...just giving them a hard time. It was always well received and taken as dark humor. The truth is, there are many many paths in life that can lead to success, and sometimes that means buckling down and going to an expensive college or university. Unfortunately though, there are many instances where people get fucked pretty hard having student debt over their head forever, like a dark cloud.

the AG of Arizona has filed suit against the state colleges because the AZ constitution says that tuition needs to be nearly free. So in some states, the rate the colleges charge is arguable a crime.

there are problems with talking about education (when spoken as a contrast from vocational skills). For a lot of people, even for those paying tens and possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars, education consists of courses you want to get out of the way so you can get to the stuff you really are going to college for (that is, your very practical major). In some cases, this means not learning anything , but just passing the course with the minimum work necessary and cramming for exams, but not actually learning or digesting the material in a meaningful way. Or, even if you take these courses seriously, you're getting about two dozen courses taught by people who see their course as a way of convincing you that you ought to major in whatever they are teaching. And half the time the teachers are having an identity crisis and don't believe that you won't take your course seriously unless then can prove to you that your course is getting you "transferable skills."

    • @TangomanX2008
      @TangomanX2008 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think that idea that college should be education rather than job prep. However, that only works if the college has a worthwhile concept of education it is working with, and if higher education weren't so expensive.

    • @noahmcdaniel4920
      @noahmcdaniel4920 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

TangomanX2008 All colleges have a “worthwhile concept of education”. College is self-guided, besides GE’s there’s no curriculum. Individual departments are always solid, unless it’s not a good school or is underfunded. The problem is tons of kids are going to college who aren’t intellectually curious and who don’t even have any interest in learning a skill or getting a degree relevant to a field they’re interested in. They just go to drink, get high and have sex.
College is a *wonderful* educational opportunity if you’re a curious person and want to study subjects academically. I don’t know if you’re ever going to get people who don’t want to learn to learn by giving them some standardized curriculum. Maybe we should work on inspiring people to be more intellectually curious, but keep colleges the way they are. Just make them cheaper.
I mean some changes could be cool. I think American colleges need to adopt the “cognate” for example. Giving students better opportunities to broaden their education a bit without getting another specific minor or major would be good for the developing and curious mind.

If you have no interest in trades or something that doesn't require a degree, then it is kind of your only option. • @Pcarnevaaa

Actually funny you mention this. Doctors call this the “1 minute PE & AP” basically you take one minute to do the physical exam and make an assessment and plan.
Student loans are going to start killing people, literally. Hospitals are actually incentivizing these “1 minute” exams to increase profits and doctors are incentivized too. They get paid more for the amount of things they check off on a chart in EPIC in order to achieve level 5 billing the insurance company demands. Thus the faster they see patients, the more charts they can fill out, and the more money they get.
They don’t get paid by much time they spend with you or how thorough an exam they do, just enough to get the job done.

For any 18-22 year olds... If you haven't been a good student all through highschool, you didn't take APs, you aren't efficient at studying, and you aren't passionate about your field of study, don't even consider an expensive private school like that. A state school will be 1/10th the price and a city college will likely be free or a couple grand at the most a year. Start working IMMEDIATELY while you go to school... little gigs, internships, etc.. You aren't doing this necessarily just to impress people, you're doing this so you actually understand what jobs and positions your field of study entails. This will help you envision an actual future instead of living with constant uncertainty, which, coupled with the stress of being a first generation college student, can very well break you or lead you towards of future of regrets.

Im on SSI and will now be in dept till I die !! Yes I got my AA & BA in drug counseling but have not been able to work due to my age and I had a yr of very poor health.
SSI only pays approx 900 per mo and my husband died also so I also get widows pention of 378 per mo.
Took a 7000 student loan and now am paying 180 per mo to pay it back.
Its gotten to the point now that I have to go to food bank once a mo to just get by.
Its very hard to live on approx 1200 a mo as it is.
So I'll die with this crazy dept.
I have worked since I was 16 and am now totally stuck. Its no wonder people get terribly depressed these days. I was unable to save for my retirement also. So to all these youngsters out there, SAVE ,SAVE SAVE all you possibly can now. Cuz you dont want to end up like me..in debt ,unhappy, alone. This was suppose to be a great time in my life !!! 1. I went to a community college for 2 years and took a variety of classes to figure out what I wanted to do and get a bunch of prerequisites out of the way. This actually saved me from a major I would have been bad at (electrical engineering)
    2. I went to an in-state school that was $16k a year for tuition (It's $17k now) and only considered universities in that price range.
    3. I majored in something that makes a lot of money.
    4. I never put fun above work.
Because my parents provided assistance I got through with $33k of debt. It took me less than 2 years to pay it all off.

    -Medicine
-STEM routes (Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, etc...)
    -Finance/Bussiness
    -Law
They are well worth going for the degree because for those careers you not only need the degree but also the knowledge you learn during those years (try understanding the human body or solve complex equations without a teacher to help you) and also they are high earning careers on the median so you can get a quicker ROI(return on investment).
The thing about those areas is that there is some sort of differential treatment by the nametag of the school you went to. I think that's mostly true in Finance and Bussiness but also across the board. You are mostly paying the brand, that's not to say Stanford isn't a great school, it is a GREAT school. But 80k/year? What's an acceptable ROI on that?
to be a teacher you need a degree but the ROI is not good, teachers are underpaid across the board.
I don't understand people going 200k in debt to study literature/history/Philosophy or those social studies (that are scams), all those subjects you can just read and most of the things can be found online or a library.
The thing about plumbing is that it isn't sexy for an 18-year-old kid. Pay might be good, job might be secured but they miss out on college experience, and at that age kids really think they can do something with an arts degree.

When it comes to teaching in the USA, the pay GREATLY varies based on the state, the region within the state, the grade level, and (if teaching middle/high school) the subject.
      ---
The states that pay teachers the average highest pay tend to be the west coast (California, Washington, Oregon), the northeast (Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut), & Ohio. Starting salaries usually around $50-55k with a steady pay raise. Getting the Master’s degree in education increases annual pay by about $22k.
Most of the midwest and south grossly underpay their teachers. Some start under $35k a year and don’t have steady raises.
      ---
High school and middle school, usually pay more than elementary school.
Teaching STEM or foreign language, pays more than English, social studies, art, etc.
      ---
I’ll be teaching math, in high school, here in California (born and raised). I’m gravy money-wise.
But...teaching is VERY dependent, in terms of ROI, upon those factors mentioned above

Most even offer online courses and you can just complete them in your local library. The only party encouraging people to go into debt for unaffordable degrees are the colleges themselves. The other side of the story is these kids aiming to get into specific colleges for the "prestige" or "lifestyle," of it all.
Half of the people I talk to who want to go to NYU - first of course they tell you that it's a good school, rankings, bla-bla-bla. But dig a little deeper, you find out they just want to do the bachelor in a studio apartment in Manhattan thing like they are living a sitcom.

Went to a regional campus, got 32ish credits in and I owed $5,500. Paid it off and join the army. Now I should be able to finish my schooling debt free

I know a lot of people struggled and didn't have the option but man do I truly appreciate having the GI Bill to cover my school.

Crazy, must be nice to have your parents pay, I can’t afford to go unless I wanna be 100k in debt.

yeah. i dont like the idea of forcing my parents to pay for an expensive education. community college to start isnt bad, the trades are a great place to go if you're into that. depends on what you want to do. right now i have no idea myself.

B G this is why I’m sticking with 3 years in the army, because if I don’t like it I can at least get it over with while taking some college courses online, and save up some money to finish a bachelors degree AND use the gi bill for a master’s

There are good universities in my area for cheap ($2,500/semester), and I crazy can't believe people would pay so much for college. Simply crazy
