Mel, I think you’re very mature in the way you handle criticism. Though the thing I’d like to highlight most here is that you clearly say: “no hate to these reviewers.” Because at the end of the day, their reviews are just their personal opinion about a fictional story. Sometimes constructive criticism, but always honest and hopefully with no disrespect intended. The thing is, not every story or fictional character resonates with everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. Every reader brings their own perspective, preferences, and experiences to a book. That’s why there’s always such a big range of opinions.
ngl i like your character irl. Dealing with reviews in a healthy way is awesome content. Nobody expects anyone to write the best book as they are exploring thier writing style.
Props to ya for facing the criticism on you work and acknowledging a few as well , i really haven't read your works but very intrigued looking forward to your next work , Best to ya
The comment about blaming and being angry at the game/youtube algorythm is exactly how people behave. I heard youtubers blaming the youtube all the time. I hear people being angry AT THE GAME THEY'RE PLAYING all the time
Hi.. I'm glad there are those who spend their time listening to criticisms, regardless of their credibility or the way they are phrased. I believe it’s an effective way to grow, to master writing, and take it to new levels. In the past, I tried writing novels, but I didn’t get anywhere with them. I only received two reviews for my novel COAL QUEEN JASMIN, but at least they were 4 and 5 stars with plenty of praise. This channel has inspired me to reconnect with a former part of me that used to write in the depths of the desert, where even the wind didn't have a sound. Thank you.
I have cousins i see once a year for 2 weeks . We are really close . My favourite cousins. I have other relatives that i barely see (like once every 2 to 3 years) or even talk to and i still very close to them
I found the run up to the ending to capsule a little unnerving because we never find out who did it or why? Also the section earlier where it hints at having happened to multiple people before and the threads just trail off...very creepy indeed. But the actual way it ends, it was heartwarming and affirming and brings you back to the present. Actual things to do without the sci-fi element. It was lovely. Interestingly, Brandon Sanderson had the same feedback for his early works he was told to up the stakes and not just base the entire book on interpersonal tension. Though, for him he still does that at minimum 50% but has added epic worlds and stakes as well. I think that's what keeps his writing special. I love the way you write the interpersonal. It's so pensive and thoughtful and beautiful. I did hate Peter and Kat going in and felt so annoyed that I couldn't keep hating them by the end haha. Well as for being close to someone without a lot of conversations, I think this is the hallmark of neurodivergent people. Deep meaningful conversations where we bare our souls to strangers, so we do tend to get close quickly if we run into another ND person. By contrast it makes sense that neurotypical people find this outrageous. The way that neurotypical socializing works is that they talk on superficial matters at first. Slowly increasing familiarity and depth of topics the more they interact. It is in fact considered a faux pas to talk about a meaningful topic too quickly among neurotypical society, leading to a lot of ND folks being labelled "oversharers" by the neurotypicals. This is why a neurotypical could conflate frequency with closeness. It is also exactly one of the ways in which neurotypicals might think of autistic people as having red flags. While some reactions the characters have in the book are extreme, I pegged that down to them being teens or such and big emotions are just a part of that age. One of my favorite parts of the video is just the way you have facial expressions to the reviews, I'm kinda sorry you have go through that but it is also endearing to see you bothered but still be unbothered if that makes sense.
Criticism is part of our daily lives and with that said some criticism is just plain ignorance, and lack of understanding when they rely on adjectives, feelings, and preferences. Critics can not even distinguish what authors and their books entail more so its purpose to the readers' minds. This also happens in films most of the time.
Mel, I admire your maturity. You would be better than me with criticism. And with Goodreads... man props on you. And yes, for me I can be close with somebody and still not talk to them. (On another note, I think that's the reason why YA is such a big thing with readers. Because the characters are imperfect and aren't all goodie two-shoes all the time. If Jackie Mendoza was a great, nice person, the story would not ring true to teenagers and their experiences. We as people despite our ages are flawed people. Think about it, guys.)
I'm not really a book person, I only started reading the bible back in April of this year and I'm only at the Book of Judges, I'm also a Video Editor and not a writer of some sort, But I have to say receiving criticism is not an easy task, especially when you get flashbacks of the creative effort done for your work, I imagine you get stings on the chest (heart pains) the harsher the reviews are, but I hope you push through them and improve even more, routing for you!
I have one opinion about the cover of Cabin 5 I think with all my intellect you should not decide which cover is good. let the Customer choose the cover they like the most.
I think this a cool concept. And you handled the feedback well. But I think that the selling point is we are getting your honest "reactions" to the criticism. But mostly you were like "I get it, fair point, moving on." This may be your honest first reaction, but I think we'd love you to open up a little more. With humor, heart, or even frustration. This is what most successful reaction vids are built around. Otherwise, it feels like you are being honest but guarded, rather than actually open with your actual insights. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Hi Mel, Like the way you handle criticism. Can you give me a few suggestions on how to develop mystery stories. I have this channel which I have created recently and posting puzzles from AI. But I am making a plan to write and animate a intresting story. Please share some tips from your experience.
I am from India I love the way you speak english and pronunciation I don't have any interest in book review but i watch every video of yours because I like your English speaking
I think the comments had to be funnier for this to be more fun of a video, which is why reading 1 stars of your favorite books or classics is usually a hilarious exercise on booktube 😅this had odd vibes heh
fix mistakes, keep writing books and I have a request made me a signature charecter in your future books that people may interest😅, my name is Mohammed Shihab, nickname is SMZ, you can mention me Z (it just a request tho, leave it or take it)✌️
I never understood dedicating so much time to one-star reviews...when the time seems better spent promoting the things you like. There are books that did nothing for me, but...I can still respect the author and keep it to myself. Given the time, I'd rather talk about the things I love than the things that didn't work for me.
I've being asking to you for a few video already about books by Torrefranca " where should I start? please suggest me two books" and nobody answers. I guess I should move one and forget about it. Good bye

That was probably the best transition to a sponsor I've ever seen, good job Mel
I was about to say the same thing. Very smooth

While I do dislike the 'reviews' with their tone and all, I do respect your ability to face the criticism with mature demure (mamure?) You rock, mate.
I know. That's what I was thinking.
Props to ya for facing the criticism on you work and acknowledging a few as well , i really haven't read your works but very intrigued looking forward to your next work , Best to ya

Aw thank you for watching! I really hope you enjoy reconnecting with your passion for writing!
LOL the person who interrupted her husband’s work was a hilarious review 😂
It was a little overdramatic but exactly the sort of thing I would've done for some reason loll T_T

Good work getting through those. I would just be like “meh. Moving on” without indulging them.
Also a smooth transition to the sponsored ad 😂

I went to a high school with almost 3000 students that was about an hour away from the nearest city. Sometimes, there are just exceptions to the rule

Wow ! You are a tough one! Makes me want to read the book! ❤ respect
You can get yourself a free e-book copy of Capsule if you sign up for the mailing list on her website.
I remember going on goodreads after I read leaving wishville and capsule and being so sad because I genuinely really love your books 😂
Would love to see a video of your life without social media

I'd recommend starting with Nightshade Academy :))
Nightshade Academy is one of her latest books, and I think it's really well written. You should def start from there!
I think the comments had to be funnier for this to be more fun of a video, which is why reading 1 stars of your favorite books or classics is usually a hilarious exercise on booktube 😅this had odd vibes heh

Mel, each time you get such reviews, remember J.K Rowling's story. It's part of the process. Keep pushing. My friend. 😉
