    Hey kids! On Weekend Wankshop 160, Uncle Ben Eller here is gonna give you a lesson on how to play one of my favorite songs, Peg by Steely Dan! Don Fagen and Walter Becker are just the best. The chords in this song are so beautiful and fun to play. This is a great tune to work on your fingerstyle chord playing, too. THere's lots of big jazzy M7 and m7 chords in here, and even some 11's and stuff. A lot of those bigger chords get simplified or abbreviated for us guitarists since we just can't build the entire 6-7 note chords sometimes!
    I'll be showing you how to play the intro, the verse, the chorus, and the turnaround/bridge, so you should have everything you need to play this awesome tune. Toss it into your cover band's set and impress dads everywhere! Maybe if you guys want we will cover the solo on a later lesson.

    Wow! If it's one chord and fifty-seven verses it must be a folk ballad. If it's fifty-seven chords and one verse it must be Steely Dan!

    I think that most of Steely Dan's music was developed on a piano/keyboard and then adapted to guitar. It's amazing what Walter did with those adapted chord voicings ... pretty unique.

    I remember listening to this song when Aja first came out and immediately concluding that it was too difficult to learn (I used the excuse that the chords should be played on a keyboard, not a guitar). After all these decades it is so nice to finally learn the song - thanks to your expert instruction. You are an exceptional musician and amazing teacher!

I don't remember using these chord and forget about getting the solo right. That's next. Jay Graydon video here I come.

    It's good to watch a genuine guitar tutorial rather than a virtuoso performance disguised as one, even though these big-name TH-camrs are enthusiastic and watchable. Ben Eller (stumbled upon him earlier today) is one of the genuine and effective music teachers on TH-cam, along with @davidbennettpiano and very few others. Great stuff.

    Ben, that was a fantastic lesson. I kept saying, "I never thought I'd be able to play this song," but there I was playing it. 30 minutes later all I need to do is practice it a bunch. Awesome. Thanks!

    • @pfgpowell
      @pfgpowell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's the practising (Brit spelling) which I have now realised is, er, more than useful, plus taking it slowly to start with and getting the shapes correct before speeding up.

      @sagegoodwin1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the same exact thing, but the chords here are 100% $ and it sounds great and broken down so well- totally worth the hrs of polishing it up. Impressive teaching skills. You must have it sounding sweet by now:) peace

  • @pfgpowell

    After playing guitar badly for too many years, I have been taking proper jazz guitar/music lessons for 15 months now and a lot of the stuff which previously baffled me - 13ths, 9ths, diminished chords etc - now makes good and, crucially, reasonably simple sense.
    So your video was especially useful in that I am not just learning 'shapes' by rote (not a bad move, certainly) but also understanding more what chords are doing.
    As for suggestions for other videos it's simple: pretty much every Steely Dan song you can cope with. Thank you and keep it up.

    Thanks a bunch for this awesome tutorial. I "attempted" jazz for many years mostly in the Be-Bop realm. In that world the chord changes mostly made sense to me and seldom went off the beaten path. But my ears never got to where they could make heads or tails sense out of changes like Peg. So thanks for doing the hard work of translating complex chord sounds into the important notes. You've give folks like me a kind of "paint by number" kit to the song. LOL! I wish I had the ears to have done this myself but I don't think I ever will. So with your help now I can at least PLAY the song. :-)

    I'm hearing a higher chord ringing at the end of the first half of the chorus- could be guitar #2. Instead of [0x775x] I'm hearing [0x(12)(14)(12)(12)]. It's mostly the same chord, higher version of it.

    G Mental 9 for the Gmadd9, a chord by any other name! Excellent as always Ben, everybody loves a little Peg! I lived in Cambria, CA for 10 years, used to see Jay Graydon quite a lot, he of the uber cool solo on this track, at the Hamlet jazz club in San Simeon we met for the first rime, in the very cramped mens room, he was fixing his legendary bouffant & later I'd see him at my wife's salon in San Simeon, again having his hair done. When he wasn't styling, he'd be playing some of the most jaw dropping guitar out there, just a joy to watch him in action, I miss seeing him a lot more than the wife....
