Take my advice: Sovereignty and territorial integrity are not very good sources for a joke.
People from every nation has their own sensitivity, "Century of humiliation" is definitive one unforgettable for the Chinese People.
By talking that "joke", many of the modest, kind, helpful people you’ve met in China could have been hurt.
As the German do after WWII, one can only be respected when respect the history.

Did you know Qingdao was one of the earliest tourist destinations in China? My very first vacation was to Qingdao with my father more than 35 years ago, when vacationing was not even a thing in China. He took me to my first beach experience in Qingdao and I still have a picture of the two of us in the water. My father has passed away and I immigrated to the US with my mother at 13, but Qingdao and that vacation will always hold a special place in my heart.

First of all,I've been following you guys since your first China travel video and have come to TH-cam to like each of your videos since then(also on Bilibili), and I really like your style of videos and am excited and thankful for the friendliness of China in your videos, but for this video, I feel the need to tell you what I think as a Chinese fan.
For Chinese people, both Germany and Japan were invaders who occupied Chinese territories, so there is no such thing as who is better than the other, you know that after World War I China as a victorious country wanted the democratic western countries to return the German-occupied fallen territories, but due to weak governments the fallen territories were changed from German to Japanese, and that's it. As for the claim that Germany built a lot of infrastructure in Qingdao, it's because Germany had already recognized Qingdao as its own de facto occupied territory and had no plans to return it, which amounted to building infrastructure for itself, just like the Japanese built a lot of infrastructure in Taiwan, China, and is not a point for the Chinese to be thankful for. I'm sure you don't mean anything by it, and because Germany didn't commit all the serious anti-humanity crimes against the Chinese that Japan did, the antipathy and hatred towards German colonization is much lower than that of Japanese colonization, but because of the long history of negative propaganda and suppression of China by Western society to date, most Chinese still hold a cautiously skeptical attitude towards Western society as a whole, so jokes about the German rejoining colonial Qingdao are crossed the line for many Chinese, so you may see a few accusations appearing in the comments section, but I'm sure it's just a small slip-up, and as long as you guys keep up the friendly and objective attitude you've been showing all along, China's fans will keep showing our love as well.
Enjoy your trip and upcoming bright future, hope to meet you somewhere in China.

Even though Qingdao was technically 'leased' to the Germans, it was really forced on China due to the country’s weak position and pressure from imperial powers at the time. China had no real choice, much like with Hong Kong’s lease to the British. Both were part of a larger trend where foreign powers carved up parts of China. Today, while cities like Qingdao and Hong Kong are reminders of that colonial past, China has mostly embraced what’s left from those foreign occupations, rather than pushing for full decolonization like other countries did after gaining independence.

No country with complete sovereignty is willing to give up its territorial sovereignty and territorial sea sovereignty. Germany and Japan were both the initiators of World War II. The difference is that Germany admitted its aggression and apologized to the victimized countries, while Japan has not yet apologized to the invaded countries. This is why Japan cannot have good relations with Asian countries so far, while Germany has good relations with European countries.

Heading east, you will find the gentrified side of Qingdao, highlighted by the Olympic Sailing Center business district. This area is the perfect spot to enjoy the nighttime LED skyline show at night, best experienced with a glass of Tsingtao Beer in hand! Enjoy your time here in Qingdao!

Welcome back to China! Let me provide some historical context regarding the presence of Germans and Japanese in Qingdao. During World War I, China sent some 140,000 laborers to Europe to assist the Allies against Germany. They did not engage in combat but were involved in hauling supplies, digging trenches, and building roads and rails and other logistic tasks. When the war ended, the Allies imposed harsh penalties on Germany, and for once, China found itself on the winning side against a Western power. As part of the victorious Allies, the Chinese fully expected to recover the German colony of Shandong. However, the Allies disregarded China’s contribution to the war and transferred the German colony to Japan. This decision triggered tremendous anger among the Chinese public and laid the groundwork for the rise of the Chinese Communist Party.
One thing to note is that Germany and Japan were not the last invaders and occupiers of China. Contrary to popular belief, it was not Britain. The last invader and occupier of China is India. In August 1947, the British left the Indian subcontinent, and India emerged as the successor state to the departed British. India not only inherited the territory of the British Raj but more importantly also adopted the mindset of the British Raj. In February 1951, as a self-styled new imperial power in the mold of the British, India invaded and annexed Tawang in South Tibet. Tawang is the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama and home to the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery. The Tibetan Lhasa government protested to India, as did the Republic of China (Taiwan). Curiously, the Chinese Communist Party did not make any noise. In 1987, India made South Tibet a state and renamed it Arunachal Pradesh in an attempt to obscure its historical ties to Tibet. The territorial dispute between India and China persists to this day. Today South Tibet is restless, and India knows it. This is the reason AFSPA (Armed Force Special Power Act) is imposed on South Tibet. AFSPA gives India the power to detain or kill anyone with impunity. AFSPA is imposed on area India deemed 'disturbed', such as South Tibet and Kashmir. The Tibetans in South Tibet are voiceless but unfortunately, they are not the right kind of Tibetans, hence you would never hear their plight in the Western media.

Two points need to be added: firstly, India invaded and occupied the southern Tibetan region of China, and the Communist Party of China protested. At first, they wanted to delineate the border between the two countries through diplomatic negotiations, but failed. Later, India continued to occupy and kill Chinese people in the southern Tibetan region. In 1962, the Communist Party of China officially declared war on India, and the war was won smoothly. However, due to the high altitude there, China's military logistics supply was very difficult at that time. China decided to withdraw its troops and did not send troops to guard there. The second region of southern Tibet occupied by India, in order to occupy it for a long time, immigrated more than one million Indians to live there, but in fact, it is all inhabited by Indians

@@yujixiaolin4085 According to Neville Maxwell, who wrote the authoritative account of 'India's China War' detailing the events leading up to 1962, the CCP made no noise when India invaded and annexed Tawang in February 1951. In fact, unlike the KMT, the CCP never protest to India once it took control of mainland. The first time the CCP commented on the issue of South Tibet was in the form of a letter Zhou Enlai sent to Nehru offering to concede South Tibet in 1959. Nehru didn't bite because Nehru also claim Aksai Chin was part of India. Hence the border was never demarcated.
      Here is a timeline:
1912: In the first full year of the Republic of China after the fall of the Qing dynasty, the United States National Geographic Magazine dedicated an issue to China. Accompanying the issue is a large and detailed fold-out map of China. The map clearly shows that Dirang Dzong (德讓宗) and Tawang (達旺) are within the boundary of China.
In the enclosed red rectangle above, Dirang Dzong (spelled Dhirang Jong on the map) and Tawang are clearly marked and well within China's boundary.
1943: British India likely calculated that dealing with the Lhasa government was easier than with the Republic of China's Nationalist Government in extracting land concessions and proposed to the United States to recognize Tibet's right to exchange diplomatic representatives with other powers. The Americans rejected this proposal:
"The Government of the United States has borne in mind the fact that the Chinese Government has long claimed suzerainty over Tibet and that the Chinese constitution lists Tibet among areas constituting the territory of the Republic of China. This Government has at no time raised a question regarding either of those claims."
1944: British India annexed Dirang Dzong (德讓宗), a Tibetan-settled area. Dzong means fort in Tibetan. The Chinese Government (the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China, seated in Kunming at the time because of World War II) protested to the British. So did the Tibetan Lhasa government.
1945: British India intruded into the tribal area of South Tibet.
February 1947: The Chinese Nationalist Government lodged a complaint with the Indian mission, which was by then newly established in China, on British India's border intrusions into Chinese territory.
August 1947: Britain left South Asia, and India was created as the successor polity to the departed British. India's creation means that a country that historically did not exist suddenly appears on China's doorstep.
October 1947: The Tibetan Lhasa Government dispatched a formal request to New Delhi, asking the newly independent Indian Government to withdraw all its predecessors' intrusions into the territory between the McMahon Line and the traditional border beneath the foothills and return a wide swath of territory from Ladakh to Assam, including Sikkim and the Darjeeling district.
1949: When the defeat of the Nationalist Government in China's civil war was imminent, the Republic of China's ambassador in New Delhi reminded the Indian Government that China did not recognize the McMahon Line and held the Simla Convention invalid.
October 1949: The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) took control of the mainland, and its civil war rival, the Republic of China, retreated to Taiwan.
December 1949: India recognized the People's Republic of China as the legitimate government, effectively cutting off the diplomatic channel the Republic of China used to deliver its protests to India.
February 1951: India annexed Tawang (達旺), the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama and home to the four-hundred-year-old Tawang Monastery. The Tibetan authorities in Lhasa protested but were simply informed by the Indian political officer that India was taking over Tawang. The Tibetans protested again, accusing the Indian Government of 'seizing as its own what did not belong to it.' The Tibetans went on to ask New Delhi to withdraw its forces from Tawang immediately. The protests were ignored. The Republic of China (which had already retreated to Taiwan by then and had no diplomatic relation with India) also vehemently denounced India's territorial travesty. The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) made no noise.
October 1951: The PLA (Peoples’ Liberation Army) seized Lhasa, capturing the last remaining part of mainland China (except South Tibet) that was up to that point beyond the Communist control.
1954: India published a new map showing South Tibet as part of India. The map also shows the two neighbors of China, Sikkim, and Bhutan, as part of India. Sikkim has been a tributary state of Tibet for hundreds of years. In the 18th century, Sikkim was briefly overrun by the Nepalese Gorkhas, causing the Sikkim king to flee to Tibet. The Gorkhas continued their push to the north to Shigatse (日喀則市) and sacked the Tashilhunpo Monastery (扎什倫布寺). The Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama requested help from the Qing court, and the Qianlong emperor dispatched two separate expeditions, expelled the Gorkhas, and restored Sikkim's sovereignty and independence. The Gorkhas were pacified and became a tributary state of the Qing dynasty. Sikkim remained unmolested for the rest of its history until it was annexed by India in 1975.
January 1959: The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) commented for the first time on the issue of South Tibet when Zhou Enlai, in a letter to Nehru, offered to concede South Tibet to India. However, India rejected the offer, as it also claimed Aksai Chin as part of its territory.
1960: India started establishing posts (border markers) north of South Tibet (north of the McMahon Line) and proclaiming that it has the right to unilaterally 'improve' the McMahon Line as it sees fit.
October 1962: After years of warning, China attacked India's position in South Tibet and recovered Tawang shortly. Three weeks later, in a second wave, China recovered the whole of South Tibet.
November 1962: China unilaterally withdrew back to the north of the McMahon line.
      1975: India annexed Sikkim.
1987: India made South Tibet a state and renamed it the so-called Arunachal Pradesh. The Republic of China (Taiwan) put out a statement denouncing India. Here is the statement:
"In regard to the issue of the Indian government's illegal occupation of our country's territory and the establishment of the so-called 'Arunachal Pradesh,' the foreign ministry of the Republic of China issued the following announcement at midnight: India's illegal occupation of our country's territory has been repeatedly stated by the Government of the Republic of China as something it will not recognize. Recently, the Indian Congress unilaterally passed the establishment of 'Arunachal Pradesh' to the south of the so-called McMahon Line. The Indian Government also made it a state. The Government of the Republic of China once again solemnly proclaims that the Government of India intends to legitimize its illegal occupation of Chinese territory. The Government of the Republic of China regards this as illegal, void, and absolutely not recognized."
2008: A little over a decade after Britain returned Hong Kong to China, Britain had exited its last colonial enterprise in Asia. Tibet no longer had the utility of a bargaining chip vis-à-vis the Hong Kong issue, allowing the British to afford honesty for once. The British government issued a statement recognizing China's sovereignty over Tibet (previously recognized as suzerainty, not sovereignty). The statement, supported by both the Conservative and Labour parties, is remarkable for its honesty in admitting that Britain once had territorial ambitions in Tibet and adopted an almost apologetic tone. Here is an excerpt:
"...But our position is unusual for one reason of history that has been imported into the present: the anachronism of our formal position on whether Tibet is part of China, and whether in fact we harbour continued designs to see the break-up of China. We do not.
Our ability to get our points across has sometimes been clouded by the position the UK took at the start of the 20th century on the status of Tibet, a position based on the geopolitics of the time. Our recognition of China’s “special position” in Tibet developed from the outdated concept of suzerainty. Some have used this to cast doubt on the aims we are pursuing and to claim that we are denying Chinese sovereignty over a large part of its own territory. We have made clear to the Chinese Government, and publicly, that we do not support Tibetan independence. Like every other EU member state, and the United States, we regard Tibet as part of the People’s Republic of China. "
2014: A Tibetan Chinese named Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh (occupied South Tibet) went to old Delhi and was beaten to death because he 'looked Chinese.'
2024: The festering border dispute between India and China persists. China's earlier offer to cede South Tibet is no longer available, as China has explicitly stated that South Tibet is part of its territory. This stance mirrors the positions of both the Tibetan Lhasa Government and its civil war rival, the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Reeeeally enjoy your videos which always present the local customs and cultures of a country from a positive perspective, and you always manage to uncover some fascinating local history and cultural details. ❤👍
Some comments on today's video might be a bit too intense or even aggressive; I hope you don't mind, because on a positive note, this is a great opportunity to delve into the history of two Eastern countries.
Actually many people in China love Japanese food, games, anime culture, and their pop songs, these are all very popular elements in China .However, few people like the Japanese government because, during World War II, they invaded most of the countries in East and Southeast Asia and committed massacres against prisoners of war, civilians, women, children, and conscripted women as sex slaves for the military, which are all actions that break basic moral boundaries. During World War II, the death toll in China alone reached 35 million.
But after the war, the Japanese government never apologize to the victims and gain forgiveness like Germany did; they even commemorate war criminals convicted of serious war crimes by the international court as national heroes (Japanese politicians still openly worship at the Yasukuni Shrine every year). This remains a significant diplomatic issue between China, South Korea, and other victim countries and Japan.
By the way, some comments are quite emotional, and let me tell you why😂Do you remember the old man who appeared in your Chengdu video and, upon hearing that you were from Germany, raised his hand and said "Hi Hitler"? Although you knew he obviously meant no harm, you were still a little bit shocked. And I believe if he did that in germany then the people around him will also be shokcked😂That's pretty much the same case. Also that really reflects the importance of cultural exchange and mutual understanding.❤So you are doing a very meaningful job to enable the viewers to know the history and culture of all the other countries !🎉🌏

Shouldn’t be surprised. 😂 Shandong Province is the 2nd largest province by population with more than 100 million inhabitants, more than Germany population. The largest province is Guangdong, >126m.

Love from China.I really enjoy your videos, especially your detailed introduction to European religious cultures and various wines. The cultural exchange and collision are quite fascinating! I hope to see more information about your discussions on hometown culture and history, as I find it very interesting. Have a great journey~

you are still in the old part of city, not city center anymore, though still frequented by most tourists for its history. you may try explore toward the east side, it's beautiful and modern and leisurely at the same time!

I really love this city and was amazed and surprised that so many historical building remained even after all the heavy history.
Chinese people know how to preserve an harmony in things.
I've started a vlog on my sabbatical year with the family and among many cities we're actually planning to move there 😊
