Ping Yao is a UNESCO World Heritage Center which is why I flew there for a weekend visit in 1988. It was once the financial center of China. Because of its location and not a major city, it was not bombed during the wars years , retaining the buildings of centuries ago. Rented a bike to explore the wall city. My hotel was inside the city. Slept on a carpeted kang, had pillows filled with buckwheat and enjoyed northern food. As an ABC, I felt the ancient history I've read about come alive and imagined what life was like centuries ago.
Shanxi merchants invented the earliest banking system in China around 1856. Its Chinese name is 票号/Piaohao. However, in the late Qing Dynasty and the early ROC, the credit crisis spread in Shanxi financial circles.
I visited Pingyao about 10 years ago, and it reminded me of the place I grew up in Southeast China. In Pingyao I realized that every city the 70s and early 80s was a Pingyao, with many residential houses dating to the Qing Dynasties.
