Ping Yao is a UNESCO World Heritage Center which is why I flew there for a weekend visit in 1988. It was once the financial center of China. Because of its location and not a major city, it was not bombed during the wars years , retaining the buildings of centuries ago. Rented a bike to explore the wall city. My hotel was inside the city. Slept on a carpeted kang, had pillows filled with buckwheat and enjoyed northern food. As an ABC, I felt the ancient history I've read about come alive and imagined what life was like centuries ago.
Shanxi merchants invented the earliest banking system in China around 1856. Its Chinese name is 票号/Piaohao. However, in the late Qing Dynasty and the early ROC, the credit crisis spread in Shanxi financial circles.
I visited Pingyao about 10 years ago, and it reminded me of the place I grew up in Southeast China. In Pingyao I realized that every city the 70s and early 80s was a Pingyao, with many residential houses dating to the Qing Dynasties.

Yungang Grottoes(云冈石窟), in Datong Yuhuang Temple(玉皇庙), located in Jincheng city Foguang Temple (佛光寺) is a Buddhist temple located five kilometres from Doucun, Wutai County Tiefo Temple(铁佛寺), situated in Gaoping Wooden Pagoda of Fogong Temple(佛宫寺释迦塔) is in Ying County etc.... they even went to some of the above in the video.

The original Sino-Tibetan language was formed at the eastern borders of Shanxi, at the foothills of the Taihang mountain range (captured in this video as Wutai Mountains), before it spread all across China. Only northern most part of Shanxi, areas bordering Inner Mongolia, has Sinicized ethnic minorities (once nomadic tribes). "the culture of northern ethnic minorities" is best used to describe Ningxia. Where you could find traces of the west Xia culture that were exterminated by the Mongols, as well as the culture of the Hui (Chinese Muslims), a mixed people between the Han Chinese, the "color-eye" people (predominantly Tajiks and Uzbeks) brought to China by the Mongolians, and other northern ethnic minorities in the nearby region (Mongols, Tibetans etc.).
Whether they're the beautiful metro stations, high-speed trains, skyscrapers, the Forbidden City, or rural villages, they're all the real China. If it's in China, it's China.

There're many other international tourists sharing their China travel experience on TH-cam, some of them show only positive espects, try to attract more followers from China, and some others do the opposite. But what Katherine's doing is very neutral and real. In her videos you can find both good and bad experience, advanced and backward, passionate, hospitable and rude, impolite. Which is perfect, because China is a normal country, like every other countries, not heaven and not hell.
I agree with your comment for Katherine’s great videos. However, we must also understand why there are positive comments from many foreigners when they travelled China in the last while… simply because the mass anti China smearing campaign and disinformation about how terrible China is has been in western mainstream media for decades and decades. It takes so much effort and all these foreigners’ positive videos to counterbalance these tremendous negative bias in the world. To be honest, many ppl around the world will never see China in a positive light simply because they have been surrounded by lies about China for years. Once human forms a bias in their mind, that’s likely it. Their mindset will never change. I personally know tons of people like that. It is sad but reality. Humans only believe what they “like” to believe.
Yes, good and bad; well managed as well as corrupted, certainly. But China is a normal country, like every other countries? I wouldn't put it so. China is the major and the most long-lasting civilization, a fast developing and ever-changing country with a unique and efficient political system, and a big united state that preserves very well every wonderful local ethnic characteristics.
It is heartwarming to see China develop even in the remote and previously poor region and turn these areas into tourist mecca to help the local ppl. Thank you again Kat for these videos, taking us on an awesome journey.

@@user-xy3jh9hp01j Shanxi is a gourmet desert, Hanghzou is a street food desert, where are these self-proclaimed "gourmands" coming from? Knife-cut noodles is famously from Shanxi. My 2 favourite noodles, the 莜面栲栳栳 and cat ears, are from Shanxi. The first thing i want to look for when i get there as a Cantonese soup lover is 太原头脑, have some local sweet & vinegar dishes made with local Shanxi black vinegar, and then some 泡泡油糕 for dessert.

There's something really gratifying about watching this. As a Chinese person, it warms my heart to see Westerners visit China, despite all the propaganda and negative press, to experience firsthand what the country is truly like.
I visited Ping Yao the ancient town a few years ago. It is an amazing town that hasn't changed for hundreds of years. It is like going back in time and seeing how people lived. I'll always treasure the ancient town and its amazing Chinese architecture.

Glad to see your friends enjoyed their first trip to China! The places they visited look like a little slice of Tibet mixed with bits of old Han culture, and your video made me place the region on the list I want to take my wife and visit. Absolutely love the old town clips, they are fast disappearing from the developed provinces or turned into tourist traps.
Shanxi is closer to Gansu and Ningxia, where many China Hui people live. Hui people are Muslims of China. Mahayana Buddhism in Shanxi is different from Hinayana Buddhism in Tibet.

To be fair, market/knick knacks historically goes with Temple and the various festival around it. While Buddhist encourage simple living, I don't remember Buddha or any holy person tried to throw capitalism out. Heck, people had been going to temples to pray for wealth since time immemorial 😂. Throwing merchants out is more a Christian thing 😁
Exactly, commerce in /around temples are not forbidden in other religions, it is part of tradition. Also that is not capitalism, Capitalism is control of means of production

Shanxi is really underrated. It is so rich in history and beautiful. Planning my trip there.
Please note that there is no delicious food in Shanxi. Shanxi people are used to eating all kinds of noodles. We call it a gourmet desert.😂

Shanxi's dry climate slows down corruption, and most of them are hilly and mountainous plateaus, which survived the Japanese bombing in WW2.😊

阳离子去的这些地方我碰巧一个月前也去过,山西确实旅游资源太丰富。另外太原也不是一无是处,太原有晋祠,是北魏时期建的中国现存最早的皇家祭祀园林。很大风景 非常好,而且意外惊喜太原女孩整体颜值比较高

晋祠、崇善寺、纯阳宫(山西省艺术博物馆)、永祚寺双塔、文庙、山西省博、(一直爆满的)北齐壁画博物馆、大关帝庙。周边什么净因寺多福寺龙泉寺窦大夫祠,天龙山石窟蒙山开化寺阳曲不二寺等等更不可胜数。和山西大部分地区一样,太原是留给有准备的人的。

只有五台山而已啦,五台山是唯一漢藏兩教並存的雙重佛教聖地,鹿鼎記小說里對此就有描述。
五台山是佛教各派公认的文殊菩萨道场清凉山。 从元朝起就有藏传佛教寺院了。

cool, I did not know Shanxi is such a cool place, sorry to say I am a Chinese. My country is just way to big and got soooo long history, love her even more.
Glad to see your friends enjoyed their first trip to China! The places they visited look like a little slice of Tibet mixed with bits of old Han culture, and your video made me place the region on the list I want to take my wife and visit. Absolutely love the old town clips, they are fast disappearing from the developed provinces or turned into tourist traps.
Shanxi is closer to Gansu and Ningxia, where many China Hui people live. Hui people are Muslims of China.
Mahayana Buddhism in Shanxi is different from Hinayana Buddhism in Tibet.

To be fair, market/knick knacks historically goes with Temple and the various festival around it. While Buddhist encourage simple living, I don't remember Buddha or any holy person tried to throw capitalism out. Heck, people had been going to temples to pray for wealth since time immemorial 😂. Throwing merchants out is more a Christian thing 😁
Exactly, commerce in /around temples are not forbidden in other religions, it is part of tradition. Also that is not capitalism, Capitalism is control of means of production
