  • I've been so busy playing this guitar that I'm just now getting around to editing and posting this, but here it is! I ordered this guitar back in Aug of 2020 and after a brutal 26 month wait, it finally arrived back just before Halloween. Here's my attempt at unboxing, and first moments playing this wonderful instrument. I was so excited to finally receive this guitar and I couldn't be happier with it!
    I look forward to making more videos with it soon.

    Great guitar, Dan. It's a beauty, and thanks for posting this "unboxing" video. Looks like you went for the least "distressed" model, which I think is a great choice. I've got a small herd of Santa Cruz guitars (a 1995 12-fret dread, a 1997 OM, a 2001 D/PW and a 2010 mahogany D/PW) so I'm probably done buying guitars, but if I were going to get something new I think I'd be checking out these "Pre-War" guitars. They really look (and sound!) great. Congratulations on your new guitar!

    • @Danspielmanmusic
      @Danspielmanmusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching, Bruce. That sounds like a fun bunch of guitars! Cheers.

    • @Mr512austintexas
      @Mr512austintexas ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Danspielmanmusic Yeah, I love my Santa Cruz guitars, each and all. There are so many great brands out there, though! I want to ask, could you maybe do a video where you highlight the details on your new guitar? From the video it looks very clean, but since it's a "Pre-War" I assume that it already had some pick-wear or dings or scratches when you opened the case for the first time. Am I right about that? I guess I'm curious what "level 1" distress looks like in real life. Again, thanks for the video, and happy picking!

  • @JeffandLeslie
    @JeffandLeslie ปีที่แล้ว +4

    sounds and looks great. You have no idea how nervous you were making me holding it in front of that open case. Those latches have teeth and are designed for the purpose of putting dings in new beautiful guitars (don't ask me how I know about that).

    • @Danspielmanmusic
      @Danspielmanmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ha, ain’t that the truth. thankfully, this case doesn’t have those kind of latches. I have another case that does, and the guitar that lives in it has a nasty scratch to prove it! I’m sure I’ll find a way to distress this one eventually as well... cheers

      @Danspielmanmusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I am quite pleased with it. Pre-War started making their own cases in the last couple years (check out Original Case Company). I love the look of it- it’s very compact and pretty lightweight for what it is.

    I hope you're giving it a lot of playing time to unlock the potential of both of you 🙂 Unfortunately you did'nt post new videos the last year. Hope you keep up your great guitar work.
    One nerdy question: Is the neck of your Pre-War Mod. D 1 11/16" nut to 2 3/16" saddle or 1 3/4" to 2 5/16"? I'm not sure from the video...and do you like the neck and playability?

      Hi! Thanks so much for the kind words. I am indeed playing this guitar nearly all the time! Hoping I can get back to making more videos with it soon. It is the modern taper so the 1&11/16ths:2&3/16ths. And I absolutely love it. Those guys know how to make a neck. Cheers!

    • @Lutze_en_voyage
      @Lutze_en_voyage 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Danspielmanmusic Thanks for your reply Dan. Sounds great that you're hopeful to make new videos. 👍 Regarding the neck I wonder if the more modern taper would work for me too. I have a Martin 00-15M with a 1 11/16th nut and that is suboptimal for my hands - but I think mainly due to its very thin MLO neck profile...so could probably feel different with a thicker 40's neckprofile?! And I have no experience with 2 5/16" bridge spacing for flatpicking and strumming. Unfortunately there's no dealer here in Germany to try out and play a Pre-War. Hope there'll be a dealer here in the near future too...
      Have a nice day.

      @@Lutze_en_voyage drop them a line- I’m sure they would help answer any questions. I wouldn’t classify the neck on my guitar as ‘slim’ by any means. Mass in all the right places. I almost had them do a custom shaped neck based after another guitar that I have and really like the neck on- I am so glad I let them do their thing, as now I like their neck better than my other guitar! Good luck to you!

      @Lutze_en_voyage 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Danspielmanmusic Yeah..that's what I'm going to do to write them. I could imagine that the neck isn't too slim because they call it a 40's profile on their page...so it should have more mass to it than the recent Martin Modified Low Oval. Cool..thanks Dan.

    very nice...You won't recognize the sound in about a week or two...It will become a monster...What strings and gauge did Pre-War install? How is the set up string heights and neck relief? Does that have forward or rear shifted bracing?

    • @Danspielmanmusic
      @Danspielmanmusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s for sure! This video was shot about 5 weeks ago and it has def opened up substantially . They sent it with EJ-17s (phos/bronze 13-56). I’ve since changed to Tony Rice Monels- which are great, but excited to try them all!
      Relief wise it was marked as .010”, but it’s slightly less. Action was 3/32”- 2/32”. One of the best playing guitars I’ve ever touched! They absolutely nailed it. Also- forward shifted. Thanks Bill!

      @@Danspielmanmusic Thank you Dan.. sounds like it was set up optimally and just where I set all my Martins. The Monels sound nice on Monels but you do lose some punch and volume and some EQ across the range. I prefer P.B. mediums on mine typically EJ17 and Martin MA550/MA550S but the Martin MA550T treated and D'Addario XS coated strings sound excellent for treated and coated strings but last 3-4X (or more) longer than non treated or non coated strings. I remember when Molly Tuttle first started playing her Pre-War D, she used D'Addario EXP (also a great coated and great sounding string but no longer made) and it sounded killer. I believe she now uses D'Addario XS. Listen to her D here when she used EXP17 th-cam.com/video/Etg152GcDgI/w-d-xo.html

    • @Danspielmanmusic
      @Danspielmanmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would do it again. If you are looking for the 1&3/4 nut, D models do come for sale on the secondary market quite frequently. Mine has the modern taper which do not come up as often, which is why I waited. I also love that it was made for me. Good luck with your decision- I don’t think you could go wrong with either the D or HD!
