The cd4 hook up in back is for the CD400/400b demodular box..Thats for either 4 ch tape or vinyl records and it uses a carrier signal for true quad use..To get the vari matrix circuit to work you need the sqa/sqa2b decoder that plugs into the bottom of the unit..bottom plate access access has thumb screws...Without any of the items you will just get 2 ch stereo.

+MYDOGBUD Thats great information to know, thanks. Right now I am not using a 4 channel source. The 4270 is hooked up to a pair of Klipsch KG2's and I am also using an Audio Control C22 10 band equalizer between the pre-out main-in jumpers. It sounds great. I am glad I spent the money to have this restored. Plus it just looks awesome. Nothing sounds better than a nice vintage system.

Use 4 equal speakers for a balanced sound..Even better is a component amp for each front and rear speakers using the back pre-out jacks..Im using 4) ch stereo at 300 wpc..thats 300 per speaker and 4 full size floor speakers..amazing tone machine..one of my favorites in my marantz collection.

    Phil, I also have a 4270.
You must work on the DOLBY knob options if you choose the 4x25W.
The rear selector means to swith from STEREO mode to QUADRISTEREO which means 4 unique channels of sound. You can even play diferent sources simultaneously.
Once you choose QUADRIESTEREO you cannot have the dolby on OFF.
Let me know if I've helped.

+Joaquim Paris Additionally, it has nothing to do with cables and etc. Your sound source is STEREO - 2 channels - so try another audio source (like another iPOD or anything) and hook it up simultaneusly with your cel phone so that you would be providing sound to the rear AND the front AUX inputs. Using two different STEREO audio sources (rear and front) you will be able to notice it working. In you test what went wrong is that only one pair (of the four channels) are getting input. During the old QUADRISTEREO era, the sources had 4 RCA plugs and not just the two basic red-white. Once you switch to 2x70W what the 4270 does is distribute a STEREO source to a QUADRISTEREO output, pairing the channels and filling all the speakers with sound.

What happens if the CD-4/AUX light does not light up when switched to CD-4/AUX.....is it just a light or is there something wrong with the unit?

+Krash Magoo More than likely the light is burned out. You can test it by running a signal thru the CD-4/AUX input. If you don't get any sound that would point to an internal problem and probably a trip to the repair shop.

    Hello!
What kind of cable/adapter do you use to connect your iPhone to the receiver? Thanks.

It is a Monster cable I bought online. It has a headphone jack that plugs into the iPhone and it has two RCA jacks (right / left) on the other end. I run it thru the front AUX inputs and then turn on the main and remote speakers to get sound from all four speakers. I paid $700 to have this refurbished and when I got it back it never worked in 4 channel mode. I set this video up so the guy (in Texas) could see it first hand but he has quit responding to my phone calls and emails. I was hoping someone online may have some suggestions.

1957 Phil Thanks for your response! I'd really like to help you fixing your set up, but I'm just a newbie in this vintage audio topic. Have you tried looking for help on reddit? Search in Google for: reddit vintage audio, there is a complete subreddit always with people/technicians that can really help you. Hope you have success!
