Advising Session with a Community College Advisor

In this video, I share what an advising session is like with a community college advisor. I have been a community college advisor for over 5 years and my advising sessions are personalized and customized to each student because I recognize that no two students are the same.
As a community college advisor, I believe that my goal is to advise students on what is the best path to take to reach their goals. This does not always mean that I will advise students to attend a community college, instead I figure what is the best path for each student.In my advising sessions, I like to make parents and students think about what it is that they want their end goal to be. I like to start with the end goal and work my way back to what is the first step a student should consider taking.
In an advising session with me, students and parents will find that I don't make the final decisions on the path a student should take, I help the student create a plan by giving them my recommendations based on research, but ultimately the student is responsible for their future, so they will make the final decision.In an advising session with me, we will dig deep into what the student is interested in and I present all possible options for the student to reach their goal.
As a community college advisor, I want the student to leave the advising session knowing that they have learned something new and feeling as if they are prepared to begin the journey of reaching their end goal.

I like that you tailored this for all people. I was a realtor straight out of high school, so I never went to college. Now I’m planning on going to college for the first time as a 31 year old.
