Love your story! My dad was in the Air Force and had a chance to see Waylon play live in the late ‘60’s at a club called Luckys in Arizona. Waylon Jennings is my top country music hero! Love your story.
I'm fro Keith's hometown of Sandy Hook, Kentucky. I was a kid at the time Keith was with J.D. Crowe and he used to come to my aunt's house and folks would get together and play bluegrass and country music all weekend long. I played with Keith's nephews after high school. I still speak to Keith's brother Dwight now and then. We still feel the loss to this day as I do Waylon Jennings. I love this channel.
Country Music has never been the same since we lost Waylon Jennings, and every time we lose someone as profound and great as Waylon, the earth gets knocked a little more off its axis. These people just can’t be replaced no way, no how.
That woman of his was no Joke . She is the reason He was drinking exessly Lorie morgan is the reason Keith. Comited Suicide many knew what she was doing to Him . And she could not keep her Nose out of the bottle either .
This is the final installment of Barry talking about his days with Waylon for now. I hope y'all enjoyed it. If you have any kind words you'd like me to pass on to Barry, feel free to leave them here. : )
Please tell Barry an extra thank you from a huge waylon fan, people like Barry keep the real side of country artist life alive , after all, artists are people like me, the average person but sometimes we forget that because we are truly not connected to them as human beings, it's interviews like this that keep life in perspective, I hope that that comes across the way I want it to, thanks Otis
Please tell Barry thanks for sharing those stories and thanks to you Otis for getting them out there for us. Big Waylon fan here. I would like to here some stories when you first started playing either with garage bands or when you first started doing live gigs, good or bad. Also any more videos on your guitars would be cool too. Merry Christmas to you and Amy and your fur babies
I enjoyed your interviews with Barry so much! Thanks to you & your guests,we get to learn so much more about our heroes lives! Thank you both again, I hope y'all have a great Christmas, stay safe & keep these wonderful interviews coming!❤
Much gratitude to Barry for sharing his experiences with Waylon. Lovely to hear his stories. Which song Barry wrote did Waylon record? Thank you, and happy holidays.
Keith was my cousin. I never met him he died before I was born, but my Dad shared the stage with him in the 70’s when his bluegrass band opened up for him when he was with Ralph Stanley. They reconnected in the late 80s and he was going to come to a family reunion but didn’t get to make it. His brother Dwight is still alive and we play music together sometimes. He’s insanely talented. It’s tragic what happened to Keith. Just remember, unfortunately, it’s no one’s fault but Keith’s that he’s gone early. Not Lori’s, not anyone else’s. He had a very large demon he just couldn’t beat. Alcoholism runs very deep in the Whitley family, and every Whitley male in our genealogy has struggled with it including myself. Most of us either got sober or are still drinking or drank until they died from it. It got Keith and it still hurts our hearts.
I opened up for Keith just several weeks before he passed. They had just done the Austin City Limits show and everyone in the band were excited about it. I remember the bass player had more Haggard albums than I did. LOL Keith would have been a super star, so sad, but happy I got to see him there at Rockefellers.
You opened for KW!! I'd give alot to have known him personally.hes my hero of country music.i don't think nobody was better!! His vocal range was tear jerking!! Honk tonk bar sound! I cried the day he died.
!00 Oaks Mall opened in 1967. Because of the Beatles, just about every department store at that time had electric guitars. Sears, JC Penny, Western Auto, Woolworths. Woolco in 100 Oaks Mall was no exception. They had a huge selection of off brand guitars, amps, and basses. Our family visited 100 Oaks just as soon as it opened and shopped there often after that. My younger brother and I would always head straight to the music department to check out the guitars. We went there one night and there was a stage set up in the music department. About 10 minutes later the band came on. It was Waylon Jennings and the Waylors. Although I'm a native Nashvillian, I wasn't a fan of country music at the time and had never heard of Waylon Jennings. They started to play. It was great. Fender amps, Fender guitars, and drums. They kicked ass. When they took a break my brother and went over and tried to hang out around them. The drummer Richie Albright talked to us for most of their break. I was 12 and my brother was 10 and for him to take time to talk to us was really cool.
I’m 48 years old and Keith Whitley is my favorite country artist of all time. I was in high school when he dies and I remember being at school that day and it was a somber day. We played Keith Whitley everyday the rest of that school year.
Really great to hear Barry’s Waylon Stories thanks Otis. Waylon was, is and always will be the measuring stick by which all artists are measured for me. Lonesome Ornery and Mean is my favorite tune Waylon Recorded.
I knew about Johnny Cash's support of American Indians, but not about Waylon's. That's great to know. Thanks, Barry, for telling that story, and thanks to you, Otis, for sharing it with us. A friend and I were talking recently about The Highwaymen and how difficult it is - impossible, really - to pick a favorite. They are all so incredible and distinctly talented.
I loved hearing Waylon commented that Kieth Whitley was the greatest country singer ever. I’ve always said that even though Kieth’s time was so short. But to hear a legend confirm it makes it more true.
“I’m over you” is one of his best. So are a dozen others I could name. One of Waylon’s band mates made the claim that Wa-Tash-A (Waylon) stated that Keith Whitley was the greatest voice in country music at the time of Keiths untimely passing .?! We all know and accept George Jones in that role, but hell Waylon might’ve been mad at Jones at the time or maybe Waylon meant the greatest out of all of the new singers coming along, Alan Jackson, Clint black, Tim McGraw, Travis Tritt, and so many more I forget bc of poor memory, but I choose to believe like myself, Waylon meant Keith Whitley was going to be the next George Jones, Hank Williams, bc I loved Keith and he was special.

I only heard of Barry Walsh last week, but I feel like I could be best of friends with him. What a super genuine guy. His love for Waylon totally dovetails with mine. As a former road musician.........there is a kinship.
I ran into Waylon way out on the road in middle America once. I came around the corner at a truckstop not paying close attention and litterally bumped into him as he rounded the corner from his tour bus! Hoss - I heard/saw Waylon with and without Willie several times in Austin when he was really hot. Then, there was a decade with no Waylon gigs locally. Finally he came through and played a concert in the park. Nice show but Waylon was no longer walking and needed lots of help getting to the stage. Played the concert sitting down. Great vocals and guitar and a large band including Jesse. It was sad seeing him it bad shape but it was a fitting farewell show.
Three musicians I have always looked up to and loved more than all of the rest. Elvis, Waylon and Keith Whitley. I always wondered what Waylon thought of Keith and could never find anything about it. Thank you for sharing
I have to say that I so admire this man's skill on keyboards and accordian. When I first heard him play on one of the TH-cam things they did I did not know they were married. I could not believe how perfectly they fit together, then later that day I saw that they were married and thought good. I like the stories about Waylon but I am not surprised about what he says about Waylon, it fits the picture of Waylon I have always had in my mind. I love the story Sharon Vaughn tells about first meeting Waylon at his studio, she took him "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" and how Billy Joe Shaver finally got Waylon to listen to his songs.
He’s my favorite country artist of all time so it’s really hard to say which song is my favorite but the album I love the most is I’m a ramblin man. His version of the bottle let me down is so good

Otis anymore on Keith? I also agree with a ton of fans that he was the greatest country music singer , that to me puts Keith on the mantle with the likes of Vern Gosdin George Jones. Some more on him would be great. Also as a side I love every episode so much. I enjoyed the Blaze Foley/Townes Van Zant stories all the way to Waylon’s book keep it up please!!!!
Telling you my favorite Waylon Jennings song would be next to impossible- I love ALL of his songs- and your favs change- sometimes I will get hooked on a song and listen to it over and over, then another day it might be another song that I am hooked on. The latest Waylon tune that I've been partial too is "The Hank Williams Syndrome". I rediscovered the cassette tape "Too Dumb For New York City and Too Ugly For LA" when I was cleaning out a cupboard in my game room- a tape that I purchased the day he released that album back in the early 90s. Hadn't heard it for some years, so I popped it in my old tape deck and have been playing it over and over! But as you know, Waylon Jennings doesn't do a BAD song, so I have hundreds of favorite Waylon Jennings songs!!
Aww, great (and sad) stories thank you Barry. The club where Waylon got his big start in Phoenix was JD's. He's still mourned here in AZ like we just lost him. Jessi is very loved and appreciated, raising funds for diabetes, genetic research and she put out an album recently. Funny you should mention Don Williams because he too was very loved on the rez, but you're right, The Hoss was the man there♥ KTNN (The Navajo Nation) in Window Rock, plays the best country music in the world. My favorite Waylon Jennings song is a very early one, Leavin' Town. Well, Highwayman too.
@@kbp689 No, JD's in Phoenix and Mr Lucky's in Tempe I think. JD's came first, Mr. Lucky's became a big two storied nightclub. Country upstairs, rock downstairs.
Man, this is cool. Glad I found your channel. I’m gonna be making the move to Nashville soon and these videos are inspiring the heck out of me. Also, I used to tour Indy wayyyy back in the day as a solo artist and always loved seeing you play, or the occasional time when we were on the same festival bills. Looking forward to catching you in TN soon.
Playing ACL is the shit! I’ve played the Opry, various TV shows, and award shows…but I never got to play Austin City Limits. Prolly the only regret from my country music touring career.
Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, George jones, and Roy Orbison are on my Mount Rushmore of country singers. Waylon is absolutely my favorite of all-time, and I consider him the absolute best. Favorite Waylon song would probably have to be Loving Her Was Easier (though it's so hard to pick just one song of his.)
If youre interested in waylon stories, check out his audiobook. I loved his music, and thats what he was really about. But that book blew me away, mainly because he narrates it. A fantastic voice. And lots of cool stories.
I enjoyed this video even more than the last one. Barry has some great stories. It was probably best that Barry stayed out of the card games. I have heard that is where Waylon and the Hag had a falling out.
This insight is so great, glad you’re doing this Otis keep it up! The part about Keith Whitley… he was incredible and Waylon is is right probably the best ever
man, I remember that warm summer night all those years ago when willie did the free concert at the fairgrounds here in Ohio, the buzz was all about "will Waylon show up?" yup, he did. what a night.
Favorite Waylon song???man there’s so many just depends on the mood I reckon I do have lonesome,on’ry & mean tattooed on my back as well as the Waylon logo on my arm, I have listened to Waylon for years I was a young kid about 12 went to spend a week with my uncle Kenneth he drove a truck & I rode around with him. I found a Waylon cassette tape in the glovebox . I ask my uncle who’s this? I knew of Waylon from the dukes.my uncle took that cassette put it the tape deck & cranked it up. I was hooked from the moment I heard that Waylon thump that his music was known for. I was hooked from that moment on.the cassette was his greatest hits. I had to buy a copy for myself.when we moved in with my granny.she had cable.& the 1st music video I ever saw was the conversation with Waylon & Hank jr.my girl is into Waylon as much as I am.lately the 2 songs I have been playing for her Waylon’s lesser known song from Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man movie hardline great great love song & the song I got a couple more years on you & that’s all.because she’s a little worried about our age difference. I told her Waylon has an answer for your concerns baby.just figured I’d share some of my experiences with Waylon’s music over the years.
I only got to see Waylon one time. And it was at Lollapalooza in Desmones Iowa and there was a giant mosh pit going on while he played non stop moshing the whole show.It was a sight to see. I always wondered what Waylon thought about all those kids in the mosh pit .
Keith Whitley should be inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame at least for the sake of country music. His name, his legacy, his family, and his music deserve it. He was such a great influence in country music and bluegrass music
Perhaps(...) mu favourite Waylon song is If 'Ol Hank Could Only See Us Now. Not only does it back up his healthy irreverence for the Nashville establishment but it has a super duper DRIVING rhythm and tempo!
The people around Waylon were probably very nice. Once we saw him at Billy Bobs, where we were out at the periphery, which was standing room. Someone in the crew came over and asked if we would like to be at Waylon's table. We gladly squeezed in.

Thanks Otis!!! Snowed in Washington state mountain . Gonna be music all day .. definitely an Otis set or two..
“Love of the common people” that song was cherished by the Navajos
Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, George jones, and Roy Orbison are on my Mount Rushmore of country singers. Waylon is absolutely my favorite of all-time, and I consider him the absolute best. Favorite Waylon song would probably have to be Loving Her Was Easier (though it's so hard to pick just one song of his.)
If youre interested in waylon stories, check out his audiobook. I loved his music, and thats what he was really about. But that book blew me away, mainly because he narrates it. A fantastic voice. And lots of cool stories.
Thanks for another great video! Keep em' coming!
⚓️ Thanks Barry, Otis 😎
I enjoyed this video even more than the last one. Barry has some great stories.
It was probably best that Barry stayed out of the card games. I have heard that is where Waylon and the Hag had a falling out.
Thanks Otis, I love Waylon! I also love your dressing skills. Your hat is awesome. I need to use it in the Horse Show✌️🤠 Happy New Year🥂
Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way. Thanks for the Waylon series.
This insight is so great, glad you’re doing this Otis keep it up! The part about Keith Whitley… he was incredible and Waylon is is right probably the best ever
Otis, thank you for all you do! You are the best! Merry Christmas from a fellow Hoosier at Heart 😊
man, I remember that warm summer night all those years ago when willie did the free concert at the fairgrounds here in Ohio, the buzz was all about "will Waylon show up?" yup, he did. what a night.
Waylon Jennings right Keith WHITLEY was the GREATEST country singer ever. Waylon died a smart man.
Thank you Otis!!! I love your videos.
Rose of Paradise. From Ireland 🇮🇪
I love the song. And really loved the record.
Waylon and Keith my two favorite country artists of all time.

Fav Keith song= nobody in his right mind
There will never be anyone like waymor !
Come with me! My favorite Waylon Jennings song!
I only got to see Waylon one time. And it was at Lollapalooza in Desmones Iowa and there was a giant mosh pit going on while he played non stop moshing the whole show.It was a sight to see. I always wondered what Waylon thought about all those kids in the mosh pit .
I miss Waylon!
Wore out his cassette tapes hauling cows when I was a kid.
Great stuff as always. Keep them coming. Anything about the Stones that's worthwhile?
Good memories...thank you.
One of my favorite is Atlanta Is Burning Down.
I loved him so much, he could literally sing anything. Lonesome Anry and Mean
you should get him to play something every now and then I'm loving your channels
RIP my brother Keith Whitley. ❤ You are truly missed my😮 beautiful friend. 😂❤ you left way to soon brother.
Love this!
ALLMOST A HAT-TRICK but not quike. No new information there but loved hearing Barry Walsh's perspective.
The song "America", was written by Sammy Johns of "Chevy Van" and "Common Man " sang by John Conlee fame.
I laughed out loud at the , Waylon, you got camera???
If I'm not mistaken the bar in Phoenix was called JD's
His last show was country thunder one, I was there.
Anita your dreaming, only daddy that'll walk the line or lonesome on'ry and mean. Such a legend, thanks Barry Walsh!
The people around Waylon were probably very nice. Once we saw him at Billy Bobs, where we were out at the periphery, which was standing room. Someone in the crew came over and asked if we would like to be at Waylon's table. We gladly squeezed in.
