I'm not as infatuated with trains anymore as I was as a child, but I can definitely respect a highly produced video by someone who cares about the hobby that is train watching.
Danny is NOT your average railfan. He tells a masterfully crafted STORY in each video, containing tons of rich details and history. I subscribe to well more more than a dozen railfanning TH-cam channels, and Distant Signal stands alone at the very top!
Very cool, Danny! CSXT 1972 ended up in Wisconsin today (3/30/24) trailing on a mixed freight. It was all the buzz up here in Canadian Pacific territory!
I know the frustration of chasing heritage locomotives. After all these years, I’ve only been able to photograph exactly half of Norfolk Southern’s fleet.
Seeing this heritage unit reminds me when the Georgia Railroad was a stand alone railroad before being incorporated into the other railroads and finally CSX. You put a smile on this 72 year old rail fan. Thanks!
I wonder what ever happened to Carl Vierling. He was a train nut for LN in 1965. 10 years old. Boy new his trains. His dad worked on the rail road. Always Moving trying to get his time in and seniority. Thanks for the great picture.
Being born and raised in Waycross, the son, step-son, and nephew of railroad men, I have to say that the heritage units (especially SAL, SCL, SBD + Family Lines) is very special. I only saw the SAL video last week, and lo and behold, I was out walking around the block downtown Waycross and saw the SAL unit in trail on a East-bound train toward Nahunta. It brought a smile to my face.
Excellent videos and narraration that needs to be shared routinely about the iron rails. I remember the SCLN from the 80s of Southern, Seaboard System, Louisville & Nashville, and Chessie System logos on display via engines and rolling stock. Definitely hope CSX puts more heritage units at work for you and all of us to enjoy viewing. Thx!!
Wish you could do some railfanning in Southeast Texas, you would have some interesting finds over there especially around the port of Beaumont, Port Arthur, Nederland, etc. Majority is UP, BNSF, and CPKC alot of great railfanning photo and video shots!
Ironic that this video was about the Family Lines. It did my heart good to see those families of railfans (4:40 and 7:04) spending time together doing something that they enjoy. Wonderful👍 Thanks Danny.
The drone footage is outstanding. I sometimes get stuck at a grade crossing in Kingston , NY , and all the annoyed folks . I have a big smile !! Saw my first, mid train DPU a few weeks ago. Your channel is the best Danny, thank you very much !!
That Heritage Paint, brings a lot of emotion for me. My Grandfather worked for L&N until Medically Retired in 1968 or 9. I remember when the announcement was made of the merger in the Employee Magizine, and the Formation of Family Lines. He was L&N thru and Thru, and felt it should have gone the other way. Sadly he passed away a few years later in 1975. I miss him much.
My uncle was an L&N engineer for 35 years. He started on steam engines and ran those for almost 15 years. When I was a boy in the 60s and he was almost retired he was running locals switchers and I would sometimes meet him at the south end of the bridge and hop a ride as he and "the boys" ran the route. I was the whistle (sometimes) and throttle man. Sometimes I rode in the caboose with the other "boys." The best memories. Danny, thank you, brother. It is definitely always a pleasure.
I remember when the 1973 (Chessie System) showed up on my neck of the woods. I was tempted to wait for it after getting off work that night, but being the responsible adult that I am I went home and got some sleep. It wouldn't be long, however, before I got to see it in daylight and got some nice photos of it. Being a Chessie fan, I was glad to see something out on the rails sporting.this colorful scheme. And despite the calls of many railfans for full-on recreations a-la Norfolk Southern, I think CSX did a great job...... although I do have a slight critique of the Chessie unit. Hopefully it'll make its way around the DMV again soon.
You know if you want Danny, another subject you could cover in your video's are SPECIALS & BUSINESS CAR TRAINS. But then again they too can provide the same issues as chasing down HERITAGE engines. They don't often run like they use to back in the 90'S, they could be anywhere on a railroads system, & it's mainly a test of luck to find any tips to their locations & when to expect them to pass by.
Just saw this unit yesterday and could not find anything online because I could faintly remember what it looked like and knew it wasn’t seaboard system. Opened TH-cam today and couldn’t believe you did a video on it
This is absolutely my favorite railfan site for several reasons. 1) Thecontent is interesting, as well as being well shot and edited. 2) I love the down-home friendly folksy Florida twang and cadence of the narration. Although it's less noticeable here in Dade and Broward because of all the New Yorkers. 3) There is the friendly Florida attitude where you can stand in line with a complete stranger and within five to ten minutes made a new acquaintance, and sometimes a new friend. 4) I live in southern Broward County in Pembroke Pines and grew up in Hialeah, so the Florida scenery in the southwest and center of the state is very pleasing. 5) There is the interesting history of not just the railroad, but the area in general. 6) Last but not least, the dining recommendations for simple down home Florida food, there's nothing like it anywhere else. Even if you are not a big railfan, this is an interesting and fun channel for good ole Florida boys, and girls too.
My wife and I were in the car heading for my office in downtown Nashville three days ago and as we passed under a bridge where the CSX mainline passes through, there was CSX 1972 “Family Lines” passing over our heads. Sometimes you just get lucky.
@@distantsignaland I had a similar unexpected sighting a couple of months ago. I live near the CSX Nashville - Memphis mainline and I was returning to the house after picking up a couple of pizzas for the family and as I approached the crossing, the gates lowered and I said “well, I get to do some train spotting as the first car in line and out of the darkness came CSX 1869 Chesapeake and Ohio. Sometimes you just get lucky.
My biggest luck was driving around eastern Nebraska with my father, and along the former CNW line now UP. Went and checked out one of the crossings not easily visible from the highway we were one. There was a railfan there. Stopped and asked him what was going on, he said 844 was coming. I had no idea! So, that was lucky. Didn't have to wait long!
Anytime I get an alert there’s a new post from Distant Signal it makes my day. Thanks Danny I’m retired now from a career as an airline pilot but I started as a corporate pilot for the Chessie Systems in the 70’s flying their G-2 and HS-125 I got to see a lot of inside stuff. Keep up the good work brother and Happy Easter T
God bless you Danny. It's good to "see" you out and about in this improving spring weather. Keep'em straight out there. "Long hood forward as the Good Lord intended." >>>>>>>>>>
Danny I see you've got a new Key West hat, bravo! Though I am still waiting to put my dibs on a Distant Signal Productions hat when they become available. =) One regret I have from being retired now, is that I will never have the opportunity to run a "heritage" paint locomotive. I suppose running an old steam locomotive for a few months will have to do. It was such a pleasure being part of that program. Maybe one day I'll get to participate with another one like it.
Danny, I'm 77 and not too educated on youtube, but do watch your videos on it and believe I have signed up for your channel. My uncle was a train engineer on switch engines for the reading railroad out of Catawissa PA, in the 50s and 60's. He took me with him one day and was one of the most memorable of my life.. Never got in to train engineering however, and ended up flying helicopters. Quite a departure, but I still have the keen interest in trains. Thanks for the continuing education and for the constant reminder of that special day with my uncle.
Great video Danny. Loved the Heritage Unit...i was great. Can't wait till the next Distant Signal Prodution and the joy of watching our countries train systems!
Hey Danny thank you so much for your radio videos. They’ve helped me out so much and your videos always make my day. also speaking of heritage, I caught the L&N heritage unit a couple days ago.
Thanks for the awesome video Danny! The 1871 has been in Alabama for a while I've caught it leading by surprise a couple of times. CSXT has done a great job with the painted units!
Another fine program Danny! Fun fact, that CSX 3010 you saw in the video was at one time the Gainesville Midland Heritage sticker engine. The sticker has long since fallen off, but it's still cool to see it. That's my hometown short line railroad that CSX still runs on. I especially like the 1972 also, I've always preferred Family Lines over Seaboard System.
Last October, I was fortunate to run across NS Heritage Unit Southern #8099 sitting on the Tye siding just west of Abilene, Texas (UP Baird sub). Got some not-so-good photos since I could only get it with the sun behind it, but it was a beautiful unit. You may remember that #8099 was photographed on its side in December 2021 near Pittsburgh, PA after hitting a rock slide. Thanks for the great video!
Nice to see the old colors flying again!! A good reminder of the days when a given RR's equipment didn't look like a refugee from Pielet Brothers scrapyard in Mc Cook Illinois.........
Thank you for showing the 1972 family lines engine. I was about 7 years old when I become very interested in railroads and living in Tifton GA I got to see my share of family lines engines. Thanks again Danny for all your great videos. Have a great day be safe on the high iron.
Love the video as always. Where I grew up Kissimmee the A line ran right across the street from our house, I remember as a young kid seeing those engines caboose and rail trailers with that logo and paint.
Another great catch Danny ... Saw on another vid that Hobo Shoestring was missing since the 26th of this month ... Prayers to his family & fan base ... Thx Eddy Out !!!
I always love when I randomly catch a heritage unit when railfanning. I’ve caught CSXT 1869 (Chesapeake and Ohio), NS 1065 (Savannah and Atlanta), and NS 1066 (New York Central). I’ve also been fortunate enough with NS’s locomotives to get a close up view of NS 6969 (GoRail), and one of NS’s locomotives for Operation Lifesaver (don’t remember the number though)
I grew up.on the west coast and my father worked for SP.I was lucky enough to regularly get to ride a roughly 80 mile run up and down the coast of Oregon. As a New rail fan I have to say I love your videos and have almost ran through your videos and love the new ones to
Another great video! I saw the Chessie System heritage unit in Kennesaw going past the museum housing the General. My cat is named Chessie but it is for Cheshire Bridge Road. She has her own C&O and Chessie trains, though!
Enjoyed your video, Danny! It just so happens that my wife and I were out today to catch the L&N heritage unit that we found out by a Facebook group was leading Train M583, a Nashville, TN to Rocky Mount, NC manifest freight. We tried to catch it in Tucker, GA, northeast of Atlanta, but as you mentioned, it is hard to catch one if it is delayed for whatever reason and that's what happened to us. BTW, Tucker is located on the former Seaboard Air Line Hamlet, NC to Atlanta mainline. The Atlanta to Birmingham segment was abandoned many years ago.
This unit came north on a phosphate train for Tracy, MN. Passed my house at night in trail. Last I saw it was in Wisconsin. Hope it comes back south and leading. Great video and glad you caught this unit!
I cant believe we saw the same train! I was out for 91 and unexpectedly saw this train leave Davenport but as im a canadian railfan couldnt update any others about it
I'm not as infatuated with trains anymore as I was as a child, but I can definitely respect a highly produced video by someone who cares about the hobby that is train watching.

I've never seen the heritage unit but I've seen 4 /10 and I chase Al of them and I am watching trains everyday
Danny is NOT your average railfan. He tells a masterfully crafted STORY in each video, containing tons of rich details and history.
I subscribe to well more more than a dozen railfanning TH-cam channels, and Distant Signal stands alone at the very top!
Great catch of the FL heritage unit.I think CSX has done a very nice job on all of their heritage units as well.
Another fun adventure! Enjoyed trains as a kid and still do today at 80.
...............except when they're blocking the crossing. 😁 JimE

I've been waiting for a railfaner to capture this heritage unit in action, thank you for this one 5 star!!!!!
I agree with you on the paint schemes, CSX is doing a great job of preserving the past with emphasis on the future.
9:12 But definitely a charge for your voice on that advert! 🤑
Excellent video, Mr. Harmon! Thank you 🖐
Watching this in the crew van to go get my train lol. Love the content Danny!

Yes! That was my favorite part of this video.
Thank you for the excellent production and storytelling that are your standard for this and every video you share.
I just want to wish Danny and his family and the whole rail fanning members a happy and safe Easter
Seconded! Happy and blessëd Easter to all!
Best TH-cam channel around....hands down
I second that!

So nice to wake up this Easter morning and find a Distant Signal Easter Egg from Danny waiting for me to find!
Exactly. I clicked on that video real fast.
Birds and trains! Doesn't get much better than that. Thanks for taking us along, Danny!

Heritage unit app for your phone is darn good.
People don’t always update the train symbol. But worth a look for you!
Danny, You are the Walter Cronkite of railroad reporting. You make it interesting and fun.
Walter Cronkite was an asshole. He didn't report news, he reported the agenda. Same as today. Mr. Harmon is a far cry from that!!
Thanks Danny. The dronemister for the win.👍
Great to see you back on the high iron.
Great job Danny! The CSX did an excellent job on that paint job. Drones are truly excellent for recon. I've put tons of flight time into mine.
Nice to see the old colors flying again!! A good reminder of the days when a given RR's equipment didn't look like a refugee from Pielet Brothers scrapyard in Mc Cook Illinois.........
I love family lines, what you said in the intro about heritage units is soooooooo true.
Happy Easter Danny! Looking forward to the next awesome video. Have a nice day 😊
Nice one! I’m in Florida and just got back from Folkston! Had a good time!
Another great video. Hello Danny from one of your fans in the UK. 👍
I was lucky enough to get him behind my store at the north end Courtland on the Henderson Sub in Springfield, TN

I was so thrilled when they showed it off back in November .
Hi Danny. great video. Good to see you back on the high iron. Been missing you and your videos.
Danny you were doing locomotive pinball for the day.
I always enjoy your content 👍
Great video Danny! A retired Engineer told me that "L&N" didn't stand for Louisville & Nashville, it was "Lonely & Nasty"🛤😁
The CSX heritage units are so much better looking than the Norfolk Southern versions I think. Great video Danny, I enjoyed it!
Great report danny, and colour scheme on 1972,easy on the eyes, take care, safe travels ,happy Easter mate,👋👋🙏🙏👍👏🚂🇦🇺
Thank you sir I love trains
i caught my first heritage unit today and danny uploads this video of the family lines hu on the same day
I just photographed this beauty today (March 30, 2024) in Dakota, Donehower, and Homer Minnesota on CPKC 255. Great video once again, Danny!
Great video Danny and can’t wait to see you in the next one
Nice shot of 1972 Danny! I saw it tied down at Waycross on B211 last week.
CSX just got a few more heritage lines with the Pan Am purchase. B&M blue and Maine Central gold would make nice units. 😊👍👍
