I first started reading sci-fi in about 1960 ( 60 years ago) with Childhood’s End. That blew my mind. Then I discovered Clifford D. Simak. He was my Foundational author and my lifetime favorite. Consider the short story “Neighbor’. You’re right back there in very rural “Wisconsin” farm country. So wonderfully done. I’m so glad you discussed this author.
In some of Simak's novels, people are living cosmic lives on planets across the galaxy, communicating with family by telepathy, and seem like very ordinary, relatable people. David Wixon is also Gordon R Dickson's literary executor.
Mr. Simak and I exchanged letters once upon a time, a few years before his death. We spoke about "The Big Front Yard," the novelette that got me interested in speculative fiction. I told him what it meant to me; his response was very positive, even mind-blowing, regarding my analysis. Pertinent parts of our letters were published in the Afterword of one of the paperback reprints of one of his later novels, but In Czech. I have copies, so I have Czech books LOL. And he is my favorite author, also, but I really love his short fiction, not the novels. My favorites of his short fiction, in order from #1 on down are: The Big Front Yard Desertion Immigrant New Folks' Home Drop Dead Skirmish The Thing in the Stone A Death in the House He had huge ideas in pastoral settings, with a subtle sensayuma that makes me smile and chuckle every time I read his stories. He also loved breakfast a lot: fried eggs, bacon, and coffee, sometimes with toast. I think of him whenever I drink coffee or have bacon and eggs 😊😊😊
Informative & nicely presented 🖖👍 Among my faves: City (my introduction to the author) Goblin Reservation (has a very unique alien) Highway of Eternity (last novel 1986)

Just found your page mate.... awesome...love Simak....
Thanks a lot!! One of my favorite authors!
'I am crying all inside' is my all-time favourite sci-fi short story. Would love it if Love,Death&Robots make an episode based on it.
Great job keeping these wonderful classic authors in the public eye.

Thank you Shawn, just learning about Simak, this was so helpful!
I'm glad you found the video useful.
One of his early stories was Asteroid of Gold. It was published about 1934 and to the best of my knowledge, it was the first asteroid mining stories.
Awesome!

That's really cool. I never wrote to him. I wish I had. Thank you for watching video and commenting.
Hi, I was wondering if you would make copies of Simak’s letters? My email address is in the description.

Thanks for this exposition on an unfairly neglected writer.
