- D.L. Menard’s famous song, “La Porte d’en Arrière,” has become an anthem of sorts for many Cajuns who were used to having to come in through “the back door” to be able to partake in the American dream.
This video is Episode 5 of "Gumb-Oh! La! La!," a thirteen-part French language documentary TV series produced in the year 2000 by Télé-Vision, Ciné-Mundo, and Louisiane à la carte, directed by André Forcier and presented by Marie-Jo Thério.

All of my Dad's family was from Louisiana and he and my grandparents had the Cajun accent and I have it too although I was born in Texas. Dad would play Big Band and Cajun records at home and I absolutely love both of those styles of music. D.L. Menard is one of my favorite Cajun musicians, along with the Savoy Family Band and Jo-El Sonnier.
This sounds SO much like my relatives in Cajun country! I don't understand a damn thing they say half the time, and my wife (French Canadian) has a tough time too, but the FEEL of the music speaks for itself. This man is a legend, and I'm happy I found this video! Interesting how much English is in Cajun. Kinda like how much French and other languages are in English. We are a nation of mixed languages and cultures for sure. My family is of German decent, but that is exactly how that squeeze box got into Cajun music. Bayou Aleman in da house!
