  • Safe, structured introductions for a new rescue dog or puppy will set everyone up for success. When you have two or more dogs, your wish as a dog owner is that they all get along. But sometimes, that just does not happen. Living with multiple dogs should be intentional. We can help by implementing “Project Togetherness” to condition dogs to like and look forward to seeing each other.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • When to see a Veterinary Behaviourist.
    • The times to put your togetherness project plan into action.
    • About the signs your dog will give to show they are not comfortable with another dog.
    • Why to recognize your dog’s emotional state.
    • The importance of paying attention to your dog’s body language.
    • How dogs don’t need other dogs putting them in their place.
    • What happens when my dog Feature looks out the window.
    • About starting Project Togetherness.
    • When to use a muzzle and why to desensitize your dog to wearing one.
    • Why to use high value treats that are special.
    • About the importance of supervision and safety for all dogs.
    • How to use “Easter Biscuits” as part of Project Togetherness.
    • What a “Friendship Bed” is and why to use it.
    • How I use dog mealtimes for togetherness.
    • Why to record keep and why to know where your dog’s comfort level is with other dogs.
    • The reason you should celebrate your progress!

I’d like teaching on proper dog greetings between dogs while out on walks, or what to do if an off leash dog runs towards your leashed dog while on a walk.

Hey Susan, We have a new puppy...thought he'd just love my gentle girl, but she's getting a bit less enamoured of playing bitey tail/leg/face!! We have bought Recallers but Hubby (his dog) is not so consistent. So I need to start the journalling and training plans for Project Togetherness for them ( For My Dog's sake!! can you tell I love her?! 😍🥰) Anyway, I need to review one of your information sessions on introducing a new pup, or bringing a new pup home, this was a good start though. Thanks for the Friendship bed idea, and the side-by-side x-Pen idea especially!

Hi Susan, I am with Tracie; my dog is fearful of other dogs when we are out, I give space & reward her when she doesn’t react but there is always a loose dog, or un-aware owner that allows their dog to comes to close.
We had just started to compete in a agility it’s when lockdown happened, now we should soon be able to start training with limited numbers & I am apprehensive about her reaction to other dogs in a highly charged situation.

I'd like to see some stuff on deaf dogs. Deaf at the beginning, not as they aged. I already have loads of experience with dogs as they have lost their hearing etc. I'm doing the journaling with my old boy who doesn't enjoy the two youngsters playing. Project "get along" is so important to people . I have NOT been journaling and i can see how important that step in the Get Along will show me how my old boy is moving from annoyance to acknowledge stage. I do not want him to go to the aggressive stage. Thanks for the podcast and you'll get to the 10,000 mark this weekend!!!! Hoot Hoot or Woof Woof.

Susan, as always, these podcasts are so helpful and informative for everyone that has a dog and wants to do better. My suggestion for a topic would be about Mechanics for the Human! I find this to be one of the most challenging and ignored behaviors to teach :) It's the dance steps we need to have in place for teaching our learners and it's SO easy to create confusion as well as create clarity when we keep ourselves in check with our mechanics. Thanks always for being you and sharing with all of us :-3

I got hooked on Susan's training with Home School the Dog and I am now doing Crate Games and Recallers. I have been training a puppy from zero while re-training an obedience-trained dog, and the difference between the two dogs' understanding of what a good choice is, is HUGE. What I am finding difficult is to choose what to focus on amongst all the exercises you present to us (e.g. recall, targeting, crate training, leash walking, etc, etc) and when. I would love to see your first year training plan for This! (or Tater's): what do you teach her first, how long do you focus on each element and if there's a hierarchy between elements. I am sure her training is focused on Agility and handling, but I'd like to understand what the must-have elements for any dog's training are from your point of view.
Bottom line: I would love some help to design my dog's training plan that I could then shape depending on their needs, strengths and weaknesses. thanks!

I would love to see how to train my dog to hold up and stretch out his back feet. He knows how to wave both front feet, but he doesn’t know how to separately use his back feet and as he’s getting older I’d like to help understand his own mobility and develop a baseline like you have talked about before.

Live or podcast idea: How to grow a small dog's confidence interacting with big dogs. I generally don't let my small dog interact with (most) big dogs -- she tends to "act like prey" or, perhaps, exhibits body language like a "victim" which can trigger even a fairly gentle big dog. Thanks!

Thank you Susan. I love Tater Salad ! We lost our boxer a year ago and just about ready to get another. I’m going to do your Project Togetherness with my fearful GSD and my son’s (next door ) Cream Golden Retriever puppy 17 weeks. My GSD barks and pulls to get to dogs which started as excitement but has moved to aggression. I was thinking of using our outdoor dog pen and gradually move the puppy closer as long as my GSD will take treats. It may take weeks to move him closer but I definitely don’t want a bad rehearsal. They haven’t been in the same house. My GSD has only had contact with our boxer who passed a year ago. The boxer kinda raised the GSD. I thank you for everything. I would like to see how to teach dogs to pick up and carry objects. Like a plate or bowl, etc love you! ❤️

I have watched your podcasts on resource guarding, but I would love some help with my rescue dog, Zoe. She is doing a little bit of food resource guarding but the biggest challenge is that she “resource guards” our house, car and yard from people and dogs. If you meet her away from my house, car or yard, she’s fine. If you come to my house, she looks like she wants to take your head off. I am seeing a behaviorist and she’s on medication because she is a fearful dog, but I would like some suggestions so that my parents can come visit me for the first time since COVID and since I adopted Zoe without her barking and growling at them when they’re here. Hi Susan, thank you for all your videos. You are the first dog trainer who showed me how to use positive methods not just to teach tricks but how to change undesired behaviour. I really wish I knew what I learned from you with my first dog. Overcoming resource guarding issues and the overall concept of do-land and choices would have made our lives a little happier and much easier. I can't wait to put the theory I am learning into action one day with a new puppy. You changed my view of dog training and showed me how to reach my goals in a way that makes me feel good about it. I would love to hear your ideas about bringing up breeds bred for hunting, herding etc.. Training specifics and activities you would recommend to compensate for example the lack of active hunting? Thank you!

I would like to see how to keep my dogs from not barking when I’m not at home. They been great while Covid lockdown at the point if not caring much about people and dogs walking in the streets but now that we are staring to go back to more of a normal outside of the house life, I have seen them through the puppy camera barking for several minutes for any activity outside the house. I exercise them before i leave (30 mins walk-run) and I leave them in the garage either free with access to the backyard or crate them in the garage, both scenarios they bark A Lot!!

Hi Susan! Thank you for all your insights, you’re brilliant.
    Some questions I have,
    1) When do you name a sit, down, stand cue? I understand it is after the behavior is established and predictable, however I’m confused when teaching sit or down, using it’s yer choice. Is it you say down, pause 1 second, and then move your hand down? And the same with sit but reversed. In addition how do you speed up cues?
    2) Should the dog’s focus be on the object they want or on you? Should they be glancing back and forth? If you call their name should they hold eye contact until released or can they check in and go back to that object. I guess the root may be a poor transfer of value from food to toys to me/permissions. Which may involve the concept of the thing before the thing, which is mind blowing once you see it is everything, and them needing to hold a sit before they can have that thing.
    3) How does the dog know which treat releases them. For example I say sit and they sit, I walk away and pause and then head back, stand in reinforcement zone and deliver a treat to which they think they are done and leave. They come back again to play, but how do you increase duration with hold positions and is a timer with a journal the best way to track progress?
    4) Tony Robbins teaches a concept of collapsing an anchor, personal power day 16, Meaning a trigger has been established to a thing (vacuum), person, or dog, maybe an environment. Would it be possible to create an anchor/association to something amazingly positive maybe with the sound of a bell. Then create a situation where you produce the trigger of the negative event and the trigger of the positive event and the theory say which ever is stronger will collapse the other.
    5) Tony Robbins teaches classical conditioning as the dog is in state and Ivan rang the bell repeatedly, anchoring this emotional state to this sound, it is taught in nlp as anchoring. I understand classical conditioning as ring a bell, pause, and then present the food. With repetitions the dog is conditioned to expect food when the bell rings. Can they both be correct in their own way?
    6) Bedtime cookies is a man amazing concept, I find my dog thinks he is always hungry no matter how much chicken he has gotten. I think the idea of, I am hungry so I go to a place and ask for food/bedtime cookies is a great way to live in do land. How did you establish this fantastic routine?
If you read all of this, thank you. Your mission has inspired me and gives an opportunity to serve not only dogs, but their owners in the hidden journey of transformation and who we become.

day 1 to 7 with new puppy

Great info in this video! I have a friend with a new puppy and my 15-month-old old rescue English Shepherd didn’t do well with the puppy the first time they met. I’m not sure if she just isn’t good with puppies or if she was feeling territorial (we had them meet in our backyard) or if she just got super frustrated that we wouldn’t let her meet the puppy without the fence being between them. There was a lot of loud barking and rushing the fence at the end. Initially she could be distracted, play ball, etc., but we decided to go ahead and take her inside when she started rushing the fence. This video has given me some ideas about how to proceed when my friend’s puppy is a bit older and more confident. Also, I wonder if Project Togetherness might be altered to work with my pup and my 6-year-old cat. My cat has grown up with dogs but has never experienced a large older puppy before and she is a bit nervous about all that puppy energy in such a large package (understandably). My pup, Abby, initially had barking fits every time she saw my cat. We’ve got a baby gate up so each can have their own space and everyone is safe. Abby doesn’t bark nearly as much after 6 weeks of living with us and our cat, but she still will growl through the gait if she sees the cat and lets out an occasional bark. The growl seems more like Abby trying to talk without barking than actual lip curling and aggression. I guess I’m wondering if I just need to continue with the current setup and rewarding Abby every time she sees the cat and doesn’t bark, or if there’s something else I can do to help Abby be calm and quiet and, ideally, not even interested in the cat, so my cat can enjoy the rest of the house again.

Hi Susan, thank you for everything that you teach us. I take every word to heart! I am wondering how I could do this prevention training on a walk? I don't have another dog to practice with. My one and a half year old border collie began to dislike puppies 2 months ago. It could be because he is older or it could be because we moved 3 months ago to a new place and he became nervous... whatever the reason I need to fix this.

We have a large breed 9 month old puppy that is getting introduced to my parents' seven and eight-year-old small Terriers. My puppy is playing by pawing at the small dogs and it is too rough for them. It progressed to the small dogs freaking out and biting the big puppy... however, every time the little dog does their high pitched squeal, it almost seems like it is a positive reinforcement for the puppy to keep hitting them with his paws. He is having such a good time and the poor little dogs are one step from a heart attack.....I don't know how to teach him to play laying down and with his mouth instead of with his big heavy paws. Help!

My guys are fed in separate rooms so there's nothing to worry about and I don't have to be in the same room to prevent anything from happening. They get fed in the order they came in the house, regardless of age. My 2 Male Dobes and my Beagle/ JRT mix can now be in the same room without muzzles as long as they're calm. They love their muzzles and still use them outside when playing together. In fact, they get excited to have their Baskerville muzzles on. Still not ready to go without muzzles outside. Any ideas/suggestions as the older male likes to neck grab and put the younger/less confident Dobe (his full brother different litter) down on the ground?

I’d be most grateful for an idea re how long this May take to grow? I’m trying to get my head around how long it might take an overaroused, hyper intrusive adolescent rehomed dog to integrate into a previously stable house of 3 ( 2 of which can be reactive and one of these 2 is jealous). All labs- only 1 girl (of 11). Expecting months- is that reasonable? Can it take years? When do you know when it’s not going to happen? Such a helpful podcast- thank you - didn’t know where to start until I saw this

Wow- didn’t expect the speed of the results. Was feeling quite pessimistic when I wrote the above post. We’ve just had a weekend of 4 dogs together in the garden and house ( supervised at all times ). We had the pup 2 months before we came across PTogetherness. Worked on it as suggested ( with a divided household unless working on PT). Took a month but here we are! Thank you so much :)

I have 4 dogs. An 18 month collie mix male. A 12 month mix male of what we believe to be Pitt possibly and blue heeler. A 10 month female Pyrenees and a 4 month old Pitt female. Everyone has lived in harmony until suddenly, we were not! I have no idea what changed. I have been reading and watching and I have learned already a lot of what I was doing wrong and I have began changes in our every day lives. My question is how do I get the ONE dog to behave more kindly to all the others. I understand they all need more individual space and things like that now. But my younger male (heeler mix) wants to just walk around policing everyone. Snarking. Jumping the other dogs. Etc. I have noticed this happens most at the front door where we go out one at a time to potty break.

I would love a podcast on how to increase value for lower value reinforcements. I have a dog that is a rescue dog, and he is SUPER picky. He is less picky than he was when I first got him.... but still- rewards for him consist of Meat. Pretty much any meat, but only meat. all other treats are not taken by him. This limits my ability to have a variety mix of treats to use in training him. He has high value and no value. How do I get some low value, mid value and high value treats for him? I would love a podcast on this. Thanks!

Susan, I am really enjoying your training tips. I have an eight month old puppy that is very reactive to other dogs. If he sees another dog when he is in the car he barks non stop. I can't get his attention. He barks at other dogs when we are out walking. I usually take my dogs with me every where but my husband is getting to the point where he doesn't want to take the dogs any more because the puppy barks when ever he sees another dog. I have tried to go to dog parks and keep my dog at a distance and slowly work our way closer to other dogs. But he sometimes reacts before I have even seen the other dog. How can I help him through this issue?

My Potcake puppy is 8 months old, usually very friendly and obedient. She starts acting up when I run out of treats, or decide not to give her anymore. She gets down on her back and opens her mouth showing her teeth. I get ahold of her collar to show her that I am in control, not her. She then wiggles, acting like she is stronger than me and in control. She is stronger than me, and makes me fear her. How to I stop this behavior?😢

I may have missed your live... I am just discovering you now, I follow a few trainers to expand my own training/behavioural experience.
I am working with a border collie, 6 months old. He relentlessly chases cars and if allowed to escalate then becomes reactive out of frustration. He is constantly in "pounce mode" when walking the streets, waiting in excitement for a car of ANY speed (1km/hr or 30/km hr it doesn't matter!) I've determined it is not a fear based chase, it is purely self reinforcing behaviour/prey drive/and very very rehearsed behaviour so it is quite intense! Any chance you can touch on all the aspects of this in your live, or maybe do a podcast on this in the future? Or since I am new, if you already have talked about this, please direct me to where to find it 🙏 I value your experience with Border Collies and would love feedback from someone credible such as yourself to see how the brain ticks in this instance and what YOU may do, I have tried several strategies with some success in some situations but not so much in others, and lacking consistency.

I just got a Dachshund puppy that is 5mo old now. I also have an 8yr old Shih Tzu. The puppy is a bit of a bully. Stares at the older dog constantly. He charges him barking and snapping any time he can. The older dog usually tries to get somewhere the younger one cant reach. (Couch). They dont fight over food and will sleep next to each other but dont tolerate each other any other time. I have a small place and no room for an x-pen. How best can i just get them to tolerate each other? It is so very stressful.

What about the puppy? How do I get her to stop acting like a crazed, out fangirl every time our older dog is in her vision? I'm certain my older dog would respond positively to the protocol here if the puppy didn't whine, bark, jump, and general act out with excitement at the sight of her. Note - puppy is not that crazy with other dogs but she's DESPERATE for the dog in her house to PLAY with her and LOVE her. Unfortunately her exuberance is destroying that opportunity.
