I'd dare to say as a Cellist that the day this concerto was recorded left a mark that will never be erased by anyone in the history of Cello. I feel envy for those who had the chance to watch this performance live. It's just astonishing and breath-taking. Jacky was definitely sent to earth by God to leave us this beautiful playing of this piece. In my opinion, NO OTHER cellist has been able to reach her level at least in this concert. I wonder how things would've turned out if she hadn't died at a such young age. She'd probably be the greatest Cellist in the world. Yo-Yo-Ma is a great cellist too but I'm sorry Jacky was and is still will always be the best.
Even if you compare Jacky not to Yo-Yo-Ma, but to real geniuses of cello like Rostropovich, you would still be right saying that She is absolutely beyond and above any comparison and not only in this concerto, but in anything She played. I agree with you 100%. Jackie will always be the greatest cellist ever to me. I was blessed to be her friend and we wrote to each other. Every time I re-read her beautiful letters I dissolve into tears. I had a very intense premonition of her getting MS and dying. I wrote to her about it. She was also a very Spiritual person and saw her future. She and I just clicked. I was 17 (1967) and she was 22 at the peak of her career! In a dream I wanted to express love and support when I saw her feeling sad and fearing being sick and not being able to perform anymore. I was so upset by her sadness that I told her she was going to go onstage and play better than ever and I offered to go onstage with her if she would like. Years later in real life, she invited me to turn pages for Her husband Daniel Barenboim and so I DID go onstage with them! It all feels surreal now...like a dream! I am so blessed to have her as my friend. Thank you Universe! I later performed a special concert in her honor. I played the show on the Bonjour Stradivarius cello and I played several works including the Elgar. My Mom Elzee Newland, died a few days begore the concert and Dad died 6 weeks later. The 1,700 seat hall was sold out and the energy in the hsll was amazing. I read the audience her letters to me. My husband who passed Feb 19 2023 made a sound video of that Tribute concert and I posted it to share with people who like me, absolutely love her! My late wife Sheila, like Jacqueline Du Pre, had MS. Jacqueline excelled as a cellist, Sheila was an important botanical artist. I think this concerto, even if not specifically, this particular performance was so important to us. Whenever I hear this, I feel like weeping for them both.
Kill me if you must...but I had NO IDEA who this was. I stumbled upon it and am soooooo grateful. Such passion. This woman isn't PLAYING this instrument! She is POURING her soul out onto her bow and somehow transferring words feelings and raw passionate emotion down into those strings. This is like watching a silent movie. Now words...but you can FEEL what os being spoken. Hypnotic!!!!
Jacqueline Du Pre also had a tragic life. Her husband, Daniel Barenboim (the conductor), left her for another woman after she was struck down with multiple sclerosis at 28 and could no longer play the cello. Look her up.
How can this have 226 "dislikes"??? Even if you hate classical music, you'd have to be bowled over by this beautiful young woman, playing with her whole body, mind and soul! Jacqueline and Daniel Barenboim - the conductor - were lovers: You can see the connection between them ... This is the most fantastic performance, made more mournfully beautiful by the knowledge that Jacqueline Du Pre was stricken with multiple sclerosis only 4 years after this and died after 10 years, at only 42. A great loss for classical music.

For me not "one of...", but THE most talented (and by far), of all times, at least since audio recordings exist. In the 19th century there were Liszt and Paganini, in the 20th - Du Pre, Busoni and Richter.
The most moving concerto played by the most moving cellist. I listened again and again. However an outrageous scandal that YT puts commercials in the middle of this masterpiece !
When she went to study in Russia .The people she studied with were technically superb. But when JDP started playing they would all leave their classes to watch her . Genius !

She becomes her music and her instrument. Masterful, outstanding interpretation - dramatic with a feeling of sorrow, yet hopeful and powerful.

Ok I admit it ,being an old biker classical music has not exactly been my thing, but how can anyone not be moved by the beauty and pure loveliness of something as moving as this
Being old and a biker should not preclude you from anything. Our country is still appallingly "class ridden". Why shouldn't you "try" classical music. Certainly since the turn of 19th/20th century we've written some wonderful music (Vaughn Williams, Gurney even). Do you visit art galleries? You might walk through room after room and see nothing to which you can relate, but, suddenly, there's one painting that really moves you. It's worth the visit just for that moment. That is what the Victorians wanted when they created public museums. Save up (ha ha) and visit live theatre. Never lock yourself away from culture or the beauty of the countryside when you're out biking :)
Reading the first few comments and while Du Pre is fully deserving of the tributes and praise there is no acknowledgement of the great man Elgar who gifted her this sublime meisterwork for the cello, her career instrument of choice.
You listen to this, time and time again, over decades, and still it sounds new and alive. Du Pre is one of the extraordinary musicians of the 20th century. It's all so effortless and natural. Her concept of the piece is so broad, and her technique is superb.

I just feel the exact same way. Currently there are amazing cellists. For instance, Alisa Weilerstein, who also performed this concert with Daniel as a conductor, but I think that Jacqueline was and will always be THE BEST. It's just unbelievable. If reencarnation existed, I wonder who would be the next Jacqueline? Wad that person already born? I hope so! I want to see it in person lol
Du pre played stupendous through the 60s recording audio. She was ahead of her time. No one probably heard a cellist play like her. She was one of a kind. Not even, dare to say, yo yo MA can give a performance like du pre. If she were still alive, she'd be unbounded but she will always be infinite.
I've seen yo yo ma perform in person. He is technically flawless, a virtuoso, but could not match the feeling, and passion of a performance like this. I admire him immensely, but he could never play like this.
Can't stop watching it over and over again. She is outstanding, even with the work of a whole life I wouldn't been able to get 20 % of her talent. Anyway, she is a great deal of inspiration.
The fact that she was only around 22 years of age when this video was taken makes this performance even more mesmerising. I've yet to listen to a recording of the Elgar that surpasses her intepretation

The way that movie portrayed her was kind of wrong...I read the Carol Easton biography and Jackie was spunky yes, but she was loving. She randomly told people "I love you", loved to laugh, and loved the sea. I hope to be half the cellist she was. 💜

And even if the things that they showed on the movie are true. She was a human being too. Nobody is perfect, she obviously had her own emotional issues and specially after she got diagnosed with MS. For me, that doesn't change a thing.

Hilary has been very candid about wanting to tell the whole truth, and says that Jacqueline would have wanted no less. She’s been quoted as saying that Jackie would have loved it. So...there’s that. When in doubt, believe the source. I’m sure that ALL of that is true. That she was spontaneously loving and mischievous and troubled. I’m sure she struggled to feel loved. All of that seems plausible and understandable, given the life that she led! So, I hope you won’t be too upset by the less than perfect depiction. If she were a saint, she’d be impossible to believe!
I saw the movie before knowing of any of the controversy around it - and it did seem rather sensationalized. Truly, I think this performance says it all ! Keep aspiring and play on!
I've loved this piece of music for a long time but only just learned about Du Pre after finding this incredible performance. Discovering that she died of MS at the same age I was diagnosed with it is truly shocking.
Heartbreakingly beautiful performance, and composition by Elgar. What a tragic life for Jacqueline and Daniel Barenboim who had to suffer through her illness with her. Like MS, there were other illnesses suffered by the likes of Schumann and Smetana, who suffered from what we call OCD today, illnesses treatable with medication, and at the time, Schumann was labelled "insane". How different it could have been.... this performance by Jacqueline Du Pre is sublime.
There's something about this specific recording, maybe it's the way she brings out the first notes in fiery double stops, and then the slide from the G to A, that makes this recording truly divine.
More than that. :P It was her being that made the music, not the cello. She didn't serve the composers very much and insisted erasing all their markings, I remember reading somewhere a quote "this piece is mine now!" (paraphrasing). Also Moray Welsh commenting about how she removed the mark 'nobilmente' even though that's the way she played it in the particular passages anyway. :D She played what she saw, and felt which is so unimaginably difficult and hard to explain. Hmm, like others would be like there's this marking here, or that there, so therefore we must play it like this etc... but for her, she would give what came. Others have said that also, and I can believe them, her rubato and timing were phenomenal. Totally uninhibited. Her thoughts were so in tune with her playing.
Even the way she moved, it was so natural. There is no acting or pretense. It was like, when she played she still has a child's innocence. 5:32 there are many more moments, but how she phrased there and swayed to the side was so... extraordinary. When I see that it is like she was free from all the bad and evil things in the world. Unspoiled. I mean it's extraordinary, I'm getting excited just talking about it.
I believe you are quite right. She studied with Rostropovich in Moscow, who declared her ‘the only cellist of the younger generation who could equal and overtake my achievement’ I think what he said came to pass and that Rostropovich would have been pleased that his prediction was right.
Hildegerd Haugen Me too. As well as being a truly great cellist she had a great love of life (at least before she became ill) and a wonderfully naughty sense of humour.
+Roots Rock I also feel that Du Pre is literally having intercourse with all these grey men in the orchestra. It must have been a once in a lifetime experience for them, because she is also so incredibly 'in the service' of the orchestra, she does not demand to be the star, she is really preparing for the orchestra to shine, fort Elgar's' piece to shine, as does Barenboim. And the orchestra rises to the occasion. As we listen, we get to be part of a secret that is conveyed, that we share with them, without words being necessary. That is, I think, why this interpretation has become legendary.

This is pure talent. I'm trying to learn this concerto myself and it is not easy, nor is ANY concerto. I'm constantly put down by my peers because I don't do athletics. I play the cello and they don't like it because it's different. I have to say it's hard. But it's worth it when I hear things like this knowing that not every teenage girl listens to concertos. I wish more people my age would appreciate this kind of beauty.

She took master classes with Casals. After a few weeks, he sent her away, saying "Go home little girl, I have nothing left to teach you, you may be the greatest cellist ever, including ME.
I have just heard about Du Pre while watching this video. This concerto is obviously beautiful but I was never moved by it so deeply until I saw her playing. There are many great professional cellists playing to thousands in the concert halls but I have never seen anything close to this performance. Her cello sounds so much different in a haunting way. I watched the same concerto from many other recordings just now. In those recordings the cello always sounds just too clean, too expected and systematic. In some parts it sounds just like a violin. Not in this recording. It is deep, it is haunting. How can the cello sound so unique here? Is it the age of the recording? Is it her playing? Also, I love how elegantly she dances with the rhythm; it is smooth and not distracting. Whereas I get distracted by many professional musicians as I find their expressions way too strong as an audience. I think this is the best video I watched here for a very long time.

Ok I admit it ,being an old biker classical music has not exactly been my thing, but how can anyone not be moved by the beauty and pure loveliness of something as moving as this

Being old and a biker should not preclude you from anything. Our country is still appallingly "class ridden". Why shouldn't you "try" classical music. Certainly since the turn of 19th/20th century we've written some wonderful music (Vaughn Williams, Gurney even). Do you visit art galleries? You might walk through room after room and see nothing to which you can relate, but, suddenly, there's one painting that really moves you. It's worth the visit just for that moment. That is what the Victorians wanted when they created public museums. Save up (ha ha) and visit live theatre. Never lock yourself away from culture or the beauty of the countryside when you're out biking :)

As a cellist myself I can say that she is an inspiration to all of us everywhere.
Reading the first few comments and while Du Pre is fully deserving of the tributes and praise there is no acknowledgement of the great man Elgar who gifted her this sublime meisterwork for the cello, her career instrument of choice.

You listen to this, time and time again, over decades, and still it sounds new and alive. Du Pre is one of the extraordinary musicians of the 20th century. It's all so effortless and natural. Her concept of the piece is so broad, and her technique is superb.

Such an emotional piece for me, she was my one of fathers favourites and we had this played at his funeral. I listen to it often.

+Javier Díaz I will tell you what that " something special " is Javier.Unlike almost all other so called great musicians it was SHE who dominated the instrument and not the instrument that dominated HER.Her sheer physicality is astonishing,very,very few musicians possessed that ability.
I just feel the exact same way. Currently there are amazing cellists. For instance, Alisa Weilerstein, who also performed this concert with Daniel as a conductor, but I think that Jacqueline was and will always be THE BEST. It's just unbelievable. If reencarnation existed, I wonder who would be the next Jacqueline? Wad that person already born? I hope so! I want to see it in person lol

Du pre played stupendous through the 60s recording audio. She was ahead of her time. No one probably heard a cellist play like her. She was one of a kind. Not even, dare to say, yo yo MA can give a performance like du pre. If she were still alive, she'd be unbounded but she will always be infinite.
I've seen yo yo ma perform in person. He is technically flawless, a virtuoso, but could not match the feeling, and passion of a performance like this. I admire him immensely, but he could never play like this.
What instrument can plumb the depths of the human soul more than the cello? This is simply stunning.

The way that movie portrayed her was kind of wrong...I read the Carol Easton biography and Jackie was spunky yes, but she was loving. She randomly told people "I love you", loved to laugh, and loved the sea. I hope to be half the cellist she was. 💜

And even if the things that they showed on the movie are true. She was a human being too. Nobody is perfect, she obviously had her own emotional issues and specially after she got diagnosed with MS. For me, that doesn't change a thing.

Hilary has been very candid about wanting to tell the whole truth, and says that Jacqueline would have wanted no less. She’s been quoted as saying that Jackie would have loved it. So...there’s that. When in doubt, believe the source. I’m sure that ALL of that is true. That she was spontaneously loving and mischievous and troubled. I’m sure she struggled to feel loved. All of that seems plausible and understandable, given the life that she led! So, I hope you won’t be too upset by the less than perfect depiction. If she were a saint, she’d be impossible to believe!

I saw the movie before knowing of any of the controversy around it - and it did seem rather sensationalized. Truly, I think this performance says it all ! Keep aspiring and play on!

I've loved this piece of music for a long time but only just learned about Du Pre after finding this incredible performance. Discovering that she died of MS at the same age I was diagnosed with it is truly shocking.

Heartbreakingly beautiful performance, and composition by Elgar. What a tragic life for Jacqueline and Daniel Barenboim who had to suffer through her illness with her. Like MS, there were other illnesses suffered by the likes of Schumann and Smetana, who suffered from what we call OCD today, illnesses treatable with medication, and at the time, Schumann was labelled "insane". How different it could have been.... this performance by Jacqueline Du Pre is sublime.
There's something about this specific recording, maybe it's the way she brings out the first notes in fiery double stops, and then the slide from the G to A, that makes this recording truly divine.
More than that. :P It was her being that made the music, not the cello. She didn't serve the composers very much and insisted erasing all their markings, I remember reading somewhere a quote "this piece is mine now!" (paraphrasing). Also Moray Welsh commenting about how she removed the mark 'nobilmente' even though that's the way she played it in the particular passages anyway. :D
She played what she saw, and felt which is so unimaginably difficult and hard to explain. Hmm, like others would be like there's this marking here, or that there, so therefore we must play it like this etc... but for her, she would give what came. Others have said that also, and I can believe them, her rubato and timing were phenomenal. Totally uninhibited. Her thoughts were so in tune with her playing.
Even the way she moved, it was so natural. There is no acting or pretense. It was like, when she played she still has a child's innocence. 5:32 there are many more moments, but how she phrased there and swayed to the side was so... extraordinary. When I see that it is like she was free from all the bad and evil things in the world. Unspoiled. I mean it's extraordinary, I'm getting excited just talking about it.

I believe you are quite right. She studied with Rostropovich in Moscow, who declared her ‘the only cellist of the younger generation who could equal and overtake my achievement’ I think what he said came to pass and that Rostropovich would have been pleased that his prediction was right.

It must have been a once in a lifetime experience for them, because she is also so incredibly 'in the service' of the orchestra, she does not demand to be the star, she is really preparing for the orchestra to shine, fort Elgar's' piece to shine, as does Barenboim. And the orchestra rises to the occasion. As we listen, we get to be part of a secret that is conveyed, that we share with them, without words being necessary. That is, I think, why this interpretation has become legendary.
mtrapman “grey men”, lol! Somehow, she shines in color for me anyway. She didn’t need to demand to be the star; her performance demands it for her. I don’t know if I agree with your “intercourse” analogy, but no doubt, that’s one sensual performance. Ethereal and earthy all at once. I won’t reduce it to mere sex. It’s better than sex...but if it is sex, Jacqueline is on top.
@@mtrapman They were just married, and six feet apart...you can see/feel the sexual tension between them, that's a big part of what makes this performance work. Her concurrent recording with Barbirolli is audibly inferior.

This is a masterpiece,no other man or woman can play this piece of music,with grace and elegance,if they are the correct words,like Jacqueline can. A great loss at such a young age and very sadly missed.Also,the great Sir John Barbirolli, also a wonderful conductor with her also.

This is pure talent. I'm trying to learn this concerto myself and it is not easy, nor is ANY concerto. I'm constantly put down by my peers because I don't do athletics. I play the cello and they don't like it because it's different. I have to say it's hard. But it's worth it when I hear things like this knowing that not every teenage girl listens to concertos. I wish more people my age would appreciate this kind of beauty.

Do you remember the movie "Hillary and Jackie?" This is Jackie. Just watch this. Then tell me you don't like classical music. That's Daniel Barenboim, her then husband, conducting. She had something special and unexplainable in her playing.
I saw the movie and immediatly after seeing it I went looking for this cello concerto. She was amazing and this concerto is just ... I have no words, really.
She owns it.
She took master classes with Casals. After a few weeks, he sent her away, saying "Go home little girl, I have nothing left to teach you, you may be the greatest cellist ever, including ME.
It's so terrible seing such a wonderful musician in her fullness when knowing illness will stole her of everything!

I have just heard about Du Pre while watching this video. This concerto is obviously beautiful but I was never moved by it so deeply until I saw her playing. There are many great professional cellists playing to thousands in the concert halls but I have never seen anything close to this performance. Her cello sounds so much different in a haunting way. I watched the same concerto from many other recordings just now. In those recordings the cello always sounds just too clean, too expected and systematic. In some parts it sounds just like a violin. Not in this recording. It is deep, it is haunting. How can the cello sound so unique here? Is it the age of the recording? Is it her playing? Also, I love how elegantly she dances with the rhythm; it is smooth and not distracting. Whereas I get distracted by many professional musicians as I find their expressions way too strong as an audience. I think this is the best video I watched here for a very long time.
