Geoff once said that when he was young he wanted to be a rock tenor, but he ended up with a deep voice. Well, someone out there decided to grant that little kid's prayers because he is BOTH a rock tenor AND a super low bass.
I think it's that he is allowing the high tenor to have a solo. He did it in Sound of Silence but that was a completely different vibe. I think the haunting sadness and resolve in his voice is what did it for me!
IMO this is the best thing Geoff's done (so far!) on his solo channel. The original song choice, the arrangement, the vocal tracks, the instrumental accompaniment, the costumes, the makeup, the lighting changes - everything has just come together so perfectly in this one. And Geoff's high register! It was so good to hear all of the dwarves getting their own solos, and their own vocal ranges to sing in! I agree, listening to the tenor followed immediately by the low bass just sounds like two different people singing the song - and fits in with the setting because of it!
This cover was truly beautiful. The song really is an "eye of the storm" kind of song, where you've just come through the wind wall on one side, and you've got the other wall bearing down on you... but you have that brief moment of calmness. They just survived Smaug, and now they have multiple armies bearing down on them. Geoff captures that vibe perfectly, because... while yes, they had 'a win'... but they aren't out of it yet... and they know how much trouble they are in.
@@parkerbrown-nesbit1747 I've heard many covers of this song from people like Jonathan Young and Colm McGuinness... and none of them have been bad by any means... but I do feel like Geoff's is my favorite. I just feel bad for this song and The Last Goodbye, because I wish that they'd had better movies to be attached to. The songs are just SO beautiful.
I saw on another post a perfect description. The original is a bard in the town singing on the events to the huddled towns folk. This version is the soldiers singing to each other, knowing not all of them will come back.

Geoff always provides the music behind his singing, either using piano or keyboard with plug ins for different instrumental effects. It's all him. Nice reacrion. It's a very moving video.
I know this song is about a fictional place and fictional characters but the way Geoff does it and the video combined reminds me of the real warriors who battle real flames. The Firefighters who struggle in our towns and cities and the Smoke Jumpers and Hotshots who battle forest fires protecting our lives, homes, and even the land. On a more humorous note I know of at least 4 reactors who have been fooled into thinking this was 4 different people singing in this video

Geoff and all of VoicePlay have been pushing the limits lately. I love that they're tackling BIG iconic songs that let them cut loose and show off their talents. I'd love to see them do Living On A Prayer or Old Time Rock and Roll.

I love how each of the different Geoff’s have a different range: normal Geoff (far left) is his normal range, darker Geoff (far right) is lower, French Geoff (mid left) is super high, and mild Geoff (mid right) is just above normal. It’s super cool to listen to because I can hear each different range while also watching them/him sing. This makes me wonder if he does similar things in his other songs where each different person has a specific range that they normally sing in…?
I know that I've heard this cover too many times when it feels like I've internalized the trauma in the lyrics and it makes me cry while reflecting on things

I absolutely love what Geoff did to this song. The arrangement and energy of his arrangement are so different from Ed Sheeran's and Peter Hollens' covers of this song it's almost ridiculous.
