Recommendation for you... Go and visit Dunajec River and Niedzica castle where you can take a raft ride along the river. It's only 40 minutes from Zakopane.

Had an amazing holiday there as a kid.. family hired 2 sail boats.. and we sailed around for 2 weeks. Cool thing about Polish Lake District is most the lakes are connected via canals, you can get towed down into the next lake.
Now go up on Kasprowy Wierch (Kacper's Peak), it is 3-4 hours walk upside, and ride down with line-hanged wagoon ;)
Remember: In mountains weather changes suddenly, without warning, from scorchy sun, into storm, hail and blizzard.

but in Old Polish it was „the Blue Eye” (mod: Modre Oko) or „the Death Eye” (mod. More Oko, Oko Moru).

You see, Zakopane is a good base for any hiking trip. A lot of people do that. There are buses which take you to every valley where the mountain trails start. Few of them lead to the 'tourist spots' like: 'Morskie Oko' & 'Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy' (lakes) or Giewont & Kasprowy Wierch (famous peaks). But in higher parts, which are more dangerous and demanding, there's less people. Also Zakopane is famous for ski jumping (one of favourite sports of Polish people) and people go see the ski-jumping platforms (in winter international competitions take place there). In winter also a lot of people come there for skiing and snowboarding too.

I haven’t been here for a while. When l was a young lad l used to visit Zakopane couple of times a year. You must see the place in winter time. I recommend Christmas time and New Year. The most famous spot to visit is the Mountain Lake Morskie Oko. You need to take a bus ride from the centre.
