Most animated TV series of this period (including not just Rock & Bullwinkle but also The Flintstones, The Jetsons and so forth) were primarily aimed at adults. So were the classic cartoon shorts of the era immediately prior (like Disney, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, etc.), and so are many animated TV series today (such as The Simpsons, Family Guy or Rick and Morty.) Even many contemporary animated series clearly aimed at kids, like SpongeBob for example, have developed sizable adult fanbases. Yet the stigma persisted, both then and now, that animation is only for kids. For example, Walt Disney appeared on an episode of What's My Line back in the 50s, and the question that tipped the panel to his identity was if he was "beloved by millions of children." (You can watch the video elsewhere on YT, and IIRC, Jerry Lewis asked him that question.)
