AD2 is absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been using it for a couple years and it’s just amazing. Super-realistic and extremely powerful for those of us who can’t mic up kits anymore.

Steve Vernier I'm glad you learned a lot, Steve! Stoked to hear it inspired you to dig into Studio Drummer! We live in an amazing time to be making music 🤘😄 All the best! - Pete
Wow, this video came just in time! I'm a beginner and last night I was trying to mix ezdrummer for my track. This video showed me how wrong I was doing things. Instead of routing the drum tracks directly to the buss and from there to master fader, I was routing the tracks to the master fader and also to the buss. After watching this video I find the reasons behind the last night's total disappointment:) Thank you Warren and Pete!
Hi Mr. Buzz, that's fantastic to hear this Video was helpful!! Thanks for letting me know! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Pete is absolutely right. The best DAW is the one you feel most comfortable with. In my case that is Sonar, which has AD2 already included. I love Addictive Drums 2 and if anybody asks about a good drum software, I highly recommend this one.
This is super informative and interesting. You're an amazing teacher. I have learned so much from watching this video you taught. I create midi drums and this is exactly what I was looking to do with Studio One and Addictive Drums. Great tip and tricks too. Absolutely awesome, thanks for taking the time to create this amazing video!
That was extremely helpful. I'm am going to apply all the tips Pete provided. Plus I'm adding this video to my list so I can go back and review it. Thank you so much.
Great tutorial. When click on play buton in drums galery you can also add different caracter by clicking on oder title in same galery,For example in Vintage Dry play buton on ButtrayDry + click on Hi-Fi title, and get much cleaner sound
Nice! I like the sound of Addictive Drums, it's more natural than most other drum VSTs. The workflow in Studio One is quite impressive too... Thanks Pete for this tutorial, it's really well made with clear explanations! Thanks Warren for bringing us this video!
Thanks, this is exactly what I needed. I’m going to set up templates as I go along, and you gave me the insight I need to think about what needs to go into them. Without this, I’d be doing a bunch more work with trial and error!
What you do sir is very well done you have helped me alot I too have done recordings in all analog and doing it all in protools, cubase, ect is very different so I thank you sir and good day to you
Hi Matthew, I am very glad to be able to help! Thanks very much to Pete for showing us this in Studio One! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Great video as it's the best i've seen for addictive drums 2 that I own to get more out of it!! Greatly appreciated, as it gives me more drum shaping applications! Thank you very much for the detailed tutorial with your reasoning ideas.
Very nice presentation Pete. I will mention that working within AD2 is a great way to go too if one gets familiar with and explores all the various FX available to sculpt the kit. I feel one is limiting the power of the plugin by not taking advantage of everything that's available within it. all those FX are blended in thru AD's Master (which isn't really a master but a fader for all the FX).
Thanks Pete and Warren - amazing video, very well explained. And directly applicable to Reaper and EZDrummer! :-) I know this is not about DAWs, but Studio One and Reaper have a lot in common. I just love the quick and easy workflow of both programs. Pete, just subscribed to your channel - thumbs up!
Hey Bernd! Thanks for watching and subscribing! i appreciate it :-) Really cool to hear that Studio One and Reaper have a lot of similarities. I've never used Reaper but hear great things! All the best... - Pete
One thing I don't get is why he said, that he wanted the raw sound of the kit and then only turned off the fx at the master channel - when routing to individual outputs you are bypassing the Addictive Drums master channel anyway. But all the fx on the individual tracks (eq, compression,...) were NOT turned off and so ended up on the Studio one track channel. So they were anythingbut dry.
We call it Drumsimulator over here (laff laff), but meanwhile AD2 is a huge add-on to our DAW. Love the program and thank you Warren, for your tips getting set.
Hello Warren, one question! What's the point of making audio tracks? You can already edit and add fx's on them once you've got the tracks on the mixer.
Ok, great. Thank you! Can someone explain if it is possible to go back to instrument track and make changes and then go back to audio and still have all plug-in and effects on channels undisturbed? When I go back to instrument and back to audio, then everything is lost, and I need to make all mixing again.
Good job Pete,,, you didn't miss a thing :D,,, I've use this same exact process, and been using Studio One since V2 came out,, Better than the ole Explode to Pitches. Presonus has sure come a long way, and more to come I'm sure...
The Rocker I couldn't agree more! I think it's wonderful how quickly Studio One has progressed and advanced in just 3 iterations... PreSonus really listens to their users and beta team. Good times ahead! Super glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! 🤘😁 - Pete
Good video thanks. Didn't notice but did you leave all the compession/eq from AD2 on the individual kit pieces? I noticed you turned them off for the master fader, but not sure you did for each kit piece? Which means if not, on that preset presumably the kit pieces already had processing from AD. Cheers, and thanks for the video.
I used Studio1 and Logic for that for some time, but I liked the Pro Tools way more. So, in Pro Tools you can route your drums directly to Audio tracks. In Studio1 and Logic you must have both Aux tracks and Audio tracks (as you can't set an Instrument as Input for Audio track, so for Kick you would have Kick Aux and Kick Audio). So, there is no mess with that in Pro Tools, like it. But anyway thanks for the video!
why did you have to convert vst instrument tracks to audio each time for applying compressors and EQs? Could you do the same thing w/o conversion and convert vst's at the end before mixing down the whole thing? BTW great tutorial. Thank you!
I am using Studio One 4 and the latest version of AD and I am going all this with no changes to what is presented. I'm not using the same kit, but the techniques are exactly the same
HELP! I've followed this to a "T", and for some reason the "Main" is still showing as "Main" ---- as opposed to "Mix Buss" .... What Am I Missing? Thanks in advance for your reply. Excellent video and extremely informative!
Awesome video and lots of info just one question, is there a way to get a fader for the cymbals/or crash? Instead of just the hihat? Because when is about mixing the same EQ applied to the hihat affects the cymbals or crash and the sound becomes “flat instead of excitement or energy “ thanks
This is a great tutorial, but when I got to the "Instrument" and then "Vendor", Addictive Drums 2 doesn't show up...can you give me an idea of how to make this show up in the list or maybe show me how to install something I might have missed...thanks
Hi Warren and Pete, Can you tell me where are the faders to control RIDE and CRASH on the plug-in mixer? How do I control RIDE and CRASH on my DAW mixer? I tried to select RIDE and CRASH on FLEXI 1, 2 and 3 but I have not found them. Can you help me? Thanks.
Jesper Waller My pleasure, Jesper! 😁 I do like to dabble in Reason from time to time. Love using Reason via ReWire in Studio One or Pro Tools. Thanks for watching! 😊
Hey Pete! (or anyone, please!) What if you already have MIDI tracks and have imported them into S-one-5 and you are NOT using the AD2 internal beats? I can't get it to transform to audio correctly. Thoughts, please? Thanks!
How do you change it back to midi without loosing any of the plugs that you put on when it was audio? In my overheads the ride cymbals level is to high and needs to brought down, but have to go back into the overheads midi to do so. When I change it back and forth the plugins are not there any more. Great video by the way and really helped a lot.
Thanks for this, you've packed a lot in, appreciate it. Just got Studio One 4 pro during the sale week Nov 2018, and this vid shows a lot more than just drums, it really lays out all sorts about Studio One practicalities, and stuff about recording/panning and so on, I never knew. It does strike me, how little use is made of stereo in most albums/tracks, and the attention to detail for the drums is making a proper job of it. I once did a mildly decent amount of effort for one track, into the drums alone - a guitarist said he hated the track but could he have a copy of my drums please?! Thanks again, this is the real McCoy.
Excellent Video! Give Tanx! I would like to understand what is happen once you choose to check the "remove Instruments" while using the "Transform Instruments Track" feature. If it's removing the Instruments and I gain therefore more CPU power which is nice, but if I would like to go back and make some changes again (in MIDI) , is it still possible to transform the Audio back to MIDI again? Sorry I am not English. Hope you understand what I am trying to ask! Doc!
Thanks, Dominic! I'm glad you liked it :-) I left out the "bus" track from AD2 because it essentially serves no purpose. Its just a placeholder. My whole point was I wanted to mult out each individual drum to its own track so I could approach mixing like I do a normal acoustic drum kit. Since I use a drumbuss for that I just set one up in S1 (or whatever DAW youre in) instead. Hope that helps! :-) - Pete
As usual, a great video from Pete. I may be making the move to Studio One soon, so this was quite influential as I use AD in pretty much all of my arrangements. Just one thing; I know that you can convert stereo tracks to mono after the midi to audio transfer, but is there no way of determining this before you commit? In PT, I would set up, for instance, 4 mono aux/audio channels and 2 stereo aux/audio channels for the kit and that way you don't get stereo WAV files on all the tracks...
Thanks Gravity Music UK !! Yes Pete is wonderful! Thanks ever so much for the great comment! I really appreciate your kind words! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Once you "transform to audio track," you lose all ability to use midi to make more drum sounds. How would I get around this? Or do I just wait to "transform to audio track" when I'm 100% done playing all drum parts on my keyboard? (but even then what if I have to manually edit a drum part I ended up not liking?)
Hello, great tutorial, thank you, it sounds now more realistic ;) but what's about the -16db "security" level you said in another tuto ? You're at 0dB on the Drums tracks. Do I have to decrease dB level fader on every drums kit on addictive drums before to reach that -16dB level ? Thank you
Hmmm, when I transform the audio back to an instrument track, make my edits, and then transform back to audio, I lost all my sends and inserts that were set for the various individual drum pieces (using Studio One 5). I suspect I'd lose automation as well, but I'm not using any in my current project so didn't test this. Any thoughts on how to keep the drum routing intact as I move back and forth between audio and midi?
I am new into production, so please bear with me with the following question? What's the reason for transforming the MIDI drums into Audio? Can't we just mix it in MIDI format and export the song that way? Should I transform my MIDI piano notes into Audio also? thanks in advance.
Marvellous question! I like being able to mix the Additive drums audio the same way I would a live drum kit! I hope that clarifies? Also it's easier to give people audio tracks if it is to be remixed, not everyone has the same plug ins.
Hi, I was watching this video again for learning properly and now I can say, from my experience, that transforming things to audio once you are finish writing, in Studio One this will make the CPU performance way much lower. If I don't get things into audio my CPU will create bumps and crashes while I write. The only thing I am unsure now is if I should pick stereo or mono sometimes though. :s
Awesome video thanks for all the information! I have one question, how would you go about panning to audience perspective while doing this procedure of mixing down audio files of the kit, would you have to split the overheads and rooms and flip them etc. Thanks!
Hi Pete, this is a great tutorials specially for me as new user for Studio One, i have one quick question, in 17:58 , why all drums multi-out sound is not come out from Master channel ? because the master channel is still midi track?
What is the idea recording level Addictive Drums should be at coming into Studio One? The reason I ask is that I tried it like you showed and just about every one clipped. When recording if it goes above 0 it clips right? Thank you.
ok thanx , subscribed to your chanel. but if i like to do drumbits by myself can i record each track seperatly on midi editor and then render it? or i must record all the drums on one track first?
Nice starter tutorial, Pete. Thank you! Does AD2 also contain: intros, fills, and outros? I wonder why XLN Audio doesn't test/certify ADN 2 as Studio One compatible? That had me a bit worried until I saw this tutorial.
Great tutorial...cleaned up a lot of my confusion on certain things. But a question regarding the convert to audio/instrument. Can this process be used to convert audio loops to midi? Why do I ask? Because, often times I will find really great audio drum loops, but I want to spice them up, add in a tom hit or a reverse cymbal or whatever. I'm curious if I can convert audio drum loops to midi, edit and then expand out to individual tracks using this process. Thanks. Looking forward to your reply. And yes I hit the like button.
You are right it can't. However, Home Studio Trainer hipped me to using Melodyne to actually do this. I don't have Melodyne but thought you might want to know. Single note situations Melodyne will do it. but polyphonic stuff gets difficult.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I have a question by the way. When I separate each part out, the automation does not work. The automation works only I mute each part on mixer except master one. What should I do?
I love Addictive Drums 2, but I exclusively use Pro Tools (12.5 at this time) on PC. I have nothing against Studio One, it's just that I have neither the money to purchase another DAW nor the time to learn another one. That being said, is it possible to do something like this in Pro Tools as well? And if so, would it be possible to record a tutorial video of it? The process looks amazing and would save me beaucoup time. Thanks
Jim Glunt Hey Jim! Although here I'm teaching and working in S1, I too use Pro Tools. You can absolutely run each individual drum out to an audio track or aux, but it's not as quick and easy to specifically go from MIDI to audio as well as the time it takes to set it up. I'm in no way saying one is better than the other, it's just different. The way I'd do it in PT would be to rout each kit piece to an Aux where you'd be then able to apply processing. If you want it as audio you'd have to bus it and print it to audio (as far as I'm aware). Hope that helps! 😊 - Pete
A really good video for learning :D Great job. Still new to mixing though, can't seem to figure out why all these busses and fx channel does anything different, than just putting the reverb or compression right on the track ? Can anyone explain that to me ?
Followed your instructions but it doesn’t print the stuff to audio unless I have the program playing. It looks like yours just takes it directly to audio without it even play.
AD2 is absolutely phenomenal. I’ve been using it for a couple years and it’s just amazing. Super-realistic and extremely powerful for those of us who can’t mic up kits anymore.
Absolutely hands down, the fastest most informative instruction of how to use AD2. Thank you so much for this.

I once did a mildly decent amount of effort for one track, into the drums alone - a guitarist said he hated the track but could he have a copy of my drums please?! Thanks again, this is the real McCoy.
Does it matter what preset/style you select if you're going to turn off the built in compression/eq/fx etc?
hi ,One question...can't you separate the Ride channel? I have this problem in AD and I don't know how to have the Ride audio in a track
Doc!
Hey Pete, thanks for the tutorial! Iearned a lot! But why did you leave out the bus while re-routing?
Thanks, Dominic! I'm glad you liked it :-) I left out the "bus" track from AD2 because it essentially serves no purpose. Its just a placeholder. My whole point was I wanted to mult out each individual drum to its own track so I could approach mixing like I do a normal acoustic drum kit. Since I use a drumbuss for that I just set one up in S1 (or whatever DAW youre in) instead. Hope that helps! :-)
- Pete
Thanks for your reply. By now I figured the whole purpose of a drum bus and why it is pointless to re-route the drum bus of AD as well..;)
Dominic Lanfer 😊👍
Hello, great tutorial, thank you, it sounds now more realistic ;)
but what's about the -16db "security" level you said in another tuto ? You're at 0dB on the Drums tracks.
Do I have to decrease dB level fader on every drums kit on addictive drums before to reach that -16dB level ?
Thank you
Hmmm, when I transform the audio back to an instrument track, make my edits, and then transform back to audio, I lost all my sends and inserts that were set for the various individual drum pieces (using Studio One 5). I suspect I'd lose automation as well, but I'm not using any in my current project so didn't test this. Any thoughts on how to keep the drum routing intact as I move back and forth between audio and midi?
after i transform to audio, where are all the wave tracks stored? or i should bouncing them after?
When I separate out the kit in Studio One the drums are about 6db louder than they were when AD2 was set to Stereo Out. No idea why.
Awesome video thanks for all the information! I have one question, how would you go about panning to audience perspective while doing this procedure of mixing down audio files of the kit, would you have to split the overheads and rooms and flip them etc. Thanks!
curious to how this works in Logic Pro X
this is great , but how do i setup initially for recording a kit would I still record just the reg stereo midi mix and then transform it ?
That had me a bit worried until I saw this tutorial.
some if not most of the midi pack samples will have intros, verses, chorus, fills, bridge, and all that good stuff, you can select separately.
I know this is an old video, but does anyone know how to 'render to audio' the drum tracks like this in Logic Pro X? Many thanks.
Hey Martin! Thanks for watching :-) I don't think S1 can convert drum loops to MIDI. Not yet anyway ;-) It'd be amazing if it could!
- Pete
You are right it can't. However, Home Studio Trainer hipped me to using Melodyne to actually do this. I don't have Melodyne but thought you might want to know. Single note situations Melodyne will do it. but polyphonic stuff gets difficult.
you're absolutely right... melodyne sure can! :)
Great info at 9:00
How come there is no mixer track for rides ans cymbals ?
Thanks for the great tutorial. I have a question by the way. When I separate each part out, the automation does not work. The automation works only I mute each part on mixer except master one. What should I do?
one question: could it be on a serious record? or is more suited to demos ?
Hi Chico, I've used it on many 'serious' records!! Thanks ever so much! I'm glad to be able to help!
thank you very much!!!and congrats for the great job!!both artistically and didactic
😊 - Pete
Thanks, Pete.
My pleasure!
Thanks for the great question Jim!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Thanks for the vid!! ps don't forget console shaper ;-)
Thanks Paul! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Paul Jonker Good call on the Console Shaper!
Why does the room and overhead loose their stereo image when not sent do the Master Track inside of AD2?
