This is a NICE tape format. I have restored 3 RCAs (1 tube, 2 transistor). Two Bell Sound recorders (601 and 603). Also collected over 125 cartridges.

Have you uploaded videos about these? How did you find over 125 cartridges? Got them in the 60s?

I have one where the capstan doesn’t spin. Any ideas? Belt? Capacitor?

My 1962 Bell-o-matic version of that tape deck is now finally working and recording properly! 👍

The display tube in that deck is actually an electron ray tube (side viewing), not a cathode ray tube. These tubes were originally developed by the Du-Mont company, and adopted by RCA. They were commonly used as tuning indicators in radios, as well as audio level indicators. The top view versions looked like an eye, and gave them the nick name "magic eye" indicators. The introduction of moving coil meters made these tubes obsolete by the late 1950s.

I think this is a cool interesting format for music. It's a shame this format didn't take off as well as it should have done, but I love the idea of having your reel to reel tape in a cassette so you don't have to touch the tape. Techmoan's video on this format is cool as well.

They do have Elcaset. Tapes are expensive but sound so good.

Every time I see a portable cassette deck or reel-to-reel deck, I recall, "Your mission...should you choose to accept..." from 'Mission Impossible'. ;)

I have an unique player that not only plays the large cassette you demonstrated it also plays reel to reel. I have yet to see another tape player like it anywhere.

Some of these machines had an adapter where you could record 3 inch reel to reel with. Is that what you have?

I agree completely concerning them kept horizontal they work better that way

I have one of these in very good condition with a bunch of tapes. The capstan stopped spinning so assume either a belt or capacitor most likely

I have the actual Bell unit that tape is for. Anyway, mine needs new caps it does record and playback fine on the main unit but the remote speaker in the lid (left channel?) is weak on record and playback and apparently has been that way for many years judging by a recording by the previous owner wondering what was wrong.

That CRT is called a magic eye and is for setting record level. If the two sides meet you'll get distortion.

Video no.3 in your new series and another good one. My chances of finding these tapes & machines in the UK are very slim. Would be happy to just have one of those tape cartridges for my collection. Keep up the great work. ( By the way, are considering doing a follow up on the VHS audio item using high quality VHS tapes? Am sure your fans would appreciate it). All the best now.

I miss my old reel to reel. My first one was my Dad's Philips and then when that stopped working i got the Realistic from Radio shack and then a teac. I had my Dad's reel to reel tapes and most sounded awful. My Dad didn't do a very good job on recording music on tape but there were some he did perfectly.

I remember years ago i went to this place to find some recors and picked up a few i was looking for. Also the guy had some reel to reel tapes and he had one of those Cartridge players and he had a couple of those cartrdge tapes. I remember one was Nat King Cole Love is the thing and the other was one from RCA but can't remember the name of the tape.

Am I to guess that this format was not popular w/ reel-to-reel enthusiasts, due to lack of 7½? And same w/ other record companies not wantin' to pay royalties for prerecorded tapes?

15:30 That Fardemark Records RCA Victor-style logo is fantastic and hilarious! Instead of Nipper the dog, he used his fox logo. That is just perfect. :)

I assume that this really didn't take off was that people had plenty of records and almost everybody had a stackable record player. The Bel Canto tapes were very expensive, not much variety and portability was a problem. (Did RCA licence this tape format to other producers? I think that Columbia was very smart as they decided to let other people get in on LP's and stereo.) Cassette tapes solved these problems. With technological advances, smaller size, and everybody could produce cassettes I can see the advantages.

    • @Recordology

They did! Bell and others! By the early 60's it was gone...The idea of a cassette wasn't novel enough at the time.

To bad that this device didn't do better in the 60s. If this device was allowed to be perfected with 70s and 80s technology, it would have given CDs a run for their money. I can picture what an 80s version is this tape recorder would look like. It would have a front load design such as VCRs had, full logic transport, fluorescent display with VU meter, digital tape counter and tape function graphics, and auto reverse. It would even be advanced enough to have a hi bias tape option and Dolby HX Pro Noise Reduction. I can see the deck in my head, and hear the sound quality in my ears.

That tape recorder looks like 👍 a Shango066 special, at first. His was a stereo, with the similar speakers 🔊. I also like 👍 that 1961(ish) RCA Victor sound tape recorder. I assume it's tube-type. I bet both of these produce WAY BETTER recordings than the best cassette decks of today. Glad you're keeping 👌 these out of the dump. Those sure don't look like 👍 ordinary cassettes. Valve amplified? I have yet to tear my way inside of one of these, to see 👀 what it looks like 👍. Always remember that ANY audio tape, even these cassettes, VCR, and 8 👣 track, are sensitive to magnetic fields. I also assume sound 8 mm, and 16 mm 🎥 films are, too. You've got lots of nice stuff Mr. Record-ology!! I even like 👍 that this is a 24:00 video 📹. Beats the approximate 8:00, or 11:00. Your friend, Jeff.

I was planning on a moan about the tech,on this vid....but being as its beefy and has a mic, that Mike would enjoy, whilst eating his beef dinner, and the alignment is compact and the spool is about it.....have decided not to.The tape being at the top of the bottom, and the label has done its own thing,is hard to tell quality, but a fox would like it,being played back, especially as its one in all,on the main belomatic. That`s a really Cool Vid Sir....Great bit of playing time !!!..(Through both channels)

Yes I'm a year late, don't really care. Something I'd try is to take the audio circuitry from a mechanically defunct cassette deck, or even a decent reel to reel and use that on the transport. Don't know why he had grounding issues, maybe was the power supply, or maybe something to do with being tube technology. If any of these were direct drive then great. Or put in a modified direct drive system. Be an amusing project.
