NYC Cheesecake - Juniors in Brooklyn or Manhattan, Pastrami Sandwich - Katz Deli, which is iconic, the list is endless and you can find any type of food in NYC. As for Upstate, Buffalo Wings at Gabriel's Gate is where the locals go or Duffs, the best Beef on Weck is Schwabl's in Buffalo, been around for 150 years.
Jocelyn, You hit all the right notes WINGS, NEW YORK THIN CRUST PIZZA, AND BAGELS. As kid, I grow in Deli's . The corned beef sandwich is my favorite as my go to sandwich and for my dessert grape pie. NewYork is foodie heaven. You can't go wrong with any choice you make. Thanks again Jocelyn. Harriet and Jim
Great video of the Empire State's food/drink specialties! Here's a fairly comprehensive list for travelers visiting the Buffalo/Niagara region with some recommendations: (1) Chicken Wings (Duff's; Gabriel's Gate, Bar Bill Tavern, etc. - there's an official wing trail with too many to list), (2) Roast Beef on Weck (Charlie the Butcher, Schwabl's, Kelly's Korner), (3) Buffalo-style Pizza (Bocce Club, La Nova, too many to list), (4) Loganberry drink (drink ice cold, very sweet/syrupy hybrid of blackberry and raspberry), (5) Chocolate Sponge Candy (also known as honeycomb candy) (e.g., Fowler's, Watson's, Parkside Candy), (6) Buffalo charcoal broiled hot dogs (Sahlen's brand - Ted's), (7) Buffalo-style subs (e.g., chicken finger sub), and (8) donuts (e.g., Paula's Donuts - home of the peanut stick). Besides these specialties, Buffalo is a mecca for the fish fry in both quality and quantity. Try the local Italian, Polish, and Burmese cuisines. The butter lamb is popular, especially around Easter at the Broadway Market. For those from Western New York I highly recommend NYC-based writer Anthony Bovino's superb "Buffalo Everything - a Guide to Eating in the 'Nickel City" - a superb book (practically a Bible on all foods from Buffalo). He calls Buffalo "the comfort food capital" of the United States.
*NYC* - I take it you didn’t have time to visit the city this trip, Jocelyn. All good. Deserves its own list anyway. *steaks* - When you spend time in the five boroughs you have to splurge on a steak. NYC is the steakhouse capital of the country. *Jewish American* - The traditional foods are awesome and everyone should try some of the classics - knish, matzah ball soup, latkes, blintzes, babka, egg cream, smoked fish... *Chinese* - No trip to NY would be complete without hitting up Flushing. *BEC* - While in the city, one has to get a BEC at any corner bodega. Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a roll. Love em. *NYC hot dogs* - Go with your favorite toppings but please try one with “onion sauce,” a local classic. *soul food* - Iconic joints in Harlem but great soul food can be found all over. NYC was a major player in promoting chicken and waffles you know. 👍
I’m in NYC and my head spun just seeing the title - no video can cover NYC food, but you did well with the whole state. Of course, for NYC you have to talk about pizza. For those who don’t know, there is no one place that people agree has the best pizza. Everyone has their opinion, and there are hundreds and hundreds of venues. But there are about twenty places that make most top lists, so if you’re into pizza, Google a few lists before you come and see which ones they have in common (don’t go with just one random list!). All that said, my favorites are DiFara’s and Lucali, two places you’ll definitely see on those lists.
Excellent list for upstate, Jocelyn! 👍 *Blue Cheese* and wings. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. You should actually warn people when they are served with Ranch. 😐😀 *Beef on Weck* - Woohoo. Glad you showcased my favorite American roast beef sandwich. Beef on Weck is just ahead of Baltimore Pit Beef and LA’s French Dip. Chicago’s Italian Beef comes in 4th. Yup. I said it. At least it’s ahead of Kelly’s Roast Beef (Boston) and they invented the roast beef sandwich! *grape pie and pizza rolls* - I’ve never had either of these. Grape pie sounds interesting. *Another awesome Eats episode.*
Grape pie is nothing like you expect. But absolutely excellent. I can't eat much gluten but a beef on weck is worth a day of stomachaches. I think it is stupid good. 😉
@@WoltersWorldEats I just watched a couple of videos. Cool that the skins are separated and used to make up the bulk of the filling. One lady said it’s reminiscent of Concord grape juice and grape jelly. I’m good with that. 👍
I’m from Long Island. You need to get a knish (it’s like fried mashed potatoes). You need to go to a Jewish deli but really any deli should have it. At the pizzeria you need to try garlic knots. Also I miss Marinos Italian ice (cherry flavor is the best). You eat it and then half way down you flip the ice over in the container and eat the yummy bottom. Also you need to try some PR food, empanadas are the best. Try devil dogs (you can get it at a deli or 7 eleven). And just do you know there are two different types of NY cheesecake. Italian NY cheese cake is made with cream cheese and ricotta cheese. Jewish NY cheesecake is made with an extra thing of cream cheese (it’s a smoother taste).
What restaurants you used for all the food shots? I'm from NJ and want to go to buffalo with my wife for a weekend trip and we love your channel but you only named 2 places
The Adirondack mountains in NY is a favorite place to visit for our family and while we are there we stop and get Michigan’s or Michigan Dogs! They are popular in the Plattsburgh area and in the northern Adirondack mountains on roadside stands. They come with a spicy chili sauce with onions and yellow mustard. I have seen them across into Vermont near West Addison.😀 A must try when visiting the area.
This was great. One of these years I'll get to upstate NY for Cooperstown. If you ever did one on NYC, that would be an entire series! BTW, for cheesecake, it's got to be Juniors in Brooklyn.
The quintessential New York style pizza can be found anywhere in the broader metropolitan area, from a street corner in Manhattan to far out in Montauk on Long Island to up in Westchester and Rockland County and well north of that. But the oldest pizzerias are in Lower Manhattan and throughout downtown Brooklyn, even though every borough has its best spots. So do a bit of research as a foodie because most people will just tell you their favorite joint nearby. One other thing I’d mention, we have a tradition of Greek-owned diners and several Chinatowns in NYC and both are long established as part of our food culture throughout the greater metropolitan area. And you’ll find the Americanized version of those cuisines commonly over on diner menus and st endless Chinese takeout joints. A newer thing though is the more recent explosion of Central American cuisines (Ecuadorian/El Salvadoran/Guatemalan) sold by street carts, sit down restaurants, and cafeteria style.
Great job covering upstate NY eats! A few things about the hot dogs - in Rochester area Zweigle's are the best hot dogs, they char and split open when you grill them. In the Capital Region (Albany/Troy) you can get 'mini hot dogs' at Hot Dog Charlie's or Gus's hot dogs - really old school and good :) One significant thing about the garbage plates is the beef chili (NYers just call it "hot sauce"). I think that is a unique thing to NY and most places that have garbage plates will have their own unique "hot sauce". Nick Tahou was the originator of the garbage plate, but when we were up in NY over the summer I preferred Bill Gray's. So many places have their own variations of it though :) I don't think I have EVER had grape pie, despite growing up in Western NY. This time of year, I really miss NY apple cider and apples, they aren't as good in NC.
Girl I’m from buffalo!!!!! Woot!!! Pizza rolls wings beef on weck with salt on top teds hot dogs sooooo yummmy- duffs much better then anchor bar - and yes bleu cheese not ranch- sponge candy at Watsons is the best!!!
In New York it’s just called Pizza. Maybe NY Pizza. But never NY STYLE Pizza!! NY style means it’s not from NY. It means it’s located somewhere like Knoxville & the owner is from Bangladesh or some shit. ‘Style’ means ‘not real.’ Sorry, as you were saying…..
Oh, those wings were so good. I would go back to Buffalo just to eat wings... for days!!
Technically, with the beard, you could :)
My home town!! Yes baby!

Wow! I should have watched this before coming to New York last year! I’m starving now!

I grew up in Lake Placid. You should try a Michigan at Red Hots in Plattsburgh. It's a hotdog with a sweet meat sauce with onions and mustard
under the table recommendation: get the buffalo style pepperoni pizza if you are in buffalo. Loved that crust!

Best Wings in wny is the Bar Bill Tavern in East Aurora, New York. They’ve been voted best wings in the state of New York in for 5 years in a row!

Tragic part of growing up in upstate ny is that Blue cheese was the standard. I hate it with my whole heart no matter what form it is
If you eat at a deli in NYC go to a Kosher deli! It is better than a non kosher.
Never been a huge bagel fan, but I would probably weigh 500 lbs if I lived in New York. That food looked so good.
Canolis
Texas Hot in Wellsville, NY.
if you come back to Buffalo, you gotta try Ted's Hot Dogs! Also try Anderson's, known for a good beef on weck and good ice cream
1. I liked that bridge
2. I laughed at loud when you realized were being filmed eating the wing
3. Grape pie sounds good.
Mark really likes to get vids and pix of me looking as unladylike as possible. 🙄

I went during summer and wish I had watched this video beforehand! Had ramen 3 times during my 1 week stay 😂
Well I hope it was excellent ramen 😉

Good list for upstate but you should take a day to check out Long Island next time. Also gotta do Bacon Egg and Cheese.
Of course!!

Bacon egg and cheese sandwich
One of the best desserts in NYC is cronut - something between donut and croissant. Dominique Anselm bakery, yam!
Hey what do suggest if you are on a gluten free diet in New York
Tons of GF options at most restaurants I've seen in NYC

Rochester native here: uhhhh.... I don’t know what that thing you showed is but it’s definitely NOT an authentic garbage plate.
I agree
