    I do a lot of propmaking with silicone caulk, I have found if you cut just below the end of the main tube on the tip side instead of the bottom side, you can use a paint stick or whatever to push it all out all at once into a bowl or something to work with fast. Its much easier and less wasteful than scooping it out of the tube. Hope this helps ya. Thanks for the tutorial. I have always wanted to make a burlap mask and thought of trying silicone, but then I found your video, so now I'll be looking for some brown silicone

      That is a great idea about cutting tube on the other side! I will do that on my next mask. What other props do you make? Thanks for watching!

    Whatever that cream type gel is, it looks delicious. Even if it's truly deadly.

      Yeah, dont eat it. But you could ice a fake cake with it.

    Is the idea behind the colored caulk so that it bleeds thru the burlap? When you cover the head with caulk do you use the same color or mix the two colors on the head?

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey George, good to hear from you again. Yes, you will get caulking that comes through burlap. Its easier to paint brown than, say white. Yes, I like to mix them on the head to add color variations.

    Does this work with all fabric that isn't burlap? Want to use this for a werewolf mask

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      in theory, it should. I would do a small test first. Depending on how tight the weave of the fabric may determine the outcome.

    Cool video
    what silicon did you use ~ tried to catch the name on the tube ~ no luck
    thanks for the time

      +TheMedicinal1 I use the Dynoflex 230. I did some extensive research before I picked this one. I like this one - it remains permanently flexible, paint-able and comes in a variety of brown colors. Best part is most hardware stores carry it. I usually hit Home Depot for mine. Thanks for the question! Good luck with Mask!

    im thinking of making the scarecrow mask from Arkham Knight with the hood and "gas mask filters" would i be able to toss a cheap gas mask on a mold and then start sculpting the actual mask? (first time doing this)

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I think that would work. When you pull, after its dry I think the silicone will not stick to gas mask (depending on the material its made from) maybe do a test on a small area with silicon and see how it adheres. But it would be a great way to incorporate the canisters directly in the mask. I want to do one of these still but haven't yet. Let me know how it goes if you have any suggestions after building I would love to hear them.

    What oz weave did you use in this? 5oz at my local store but the gaps are way too big. Wonder if 10oz burlap weave would be ok

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have run into the same issue. Sometimes you can use the thinner to your advantage depending on what you are doing. However burlap coffee bags are around 23oz . You may have to go with two layers.

    Did you bulk out your armature yo the exact measurement of your head, or did you add an inch or two? I'm wondering because our of all the techniques I've seen this seems more realistic to my skill, but others that I have watch talked about the silicon shrinking as it dries. Is that an issue here or not?

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel estep it doesn’t hurt to add an inch or two so it’s not too tight

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel estep no shrinking that I have noticed

    • @jonathanestep3702
      @jonathanestep3702 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I had plans on making it a bit larger for comfortability, just wasn't sure how much I needed to plan for. Im going for a different look but I'm pretty sure this technique will still be the best way for me to go about it.

    Do you put the bubble wrap as a smoth liner or to build up your mask and how long would it take to make this and also I seen where you said we can order one from you how do we do that

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paula Chesney use the bubble wrap to build up. I am not making any to sell this year because i have had the worst month of my life.

    I have a large melon head, where does one get an armature that would match such a head?

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Doberfitz I suggest getting a foam one and wrap it in bubble wrap to make larger. If you come up with another solution I would love to here about it. You can find some Amazon Affiliate links on my website(that keeps me making videos) rawfires.com

    Okay, I give up: How did you make the one-sided, tape side out, masking tape stick to the armature:)?

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you wrap it tightly and stick the tape to it's self when you wrap it around.

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      so it's not actually sticking to the armeture.

    If I just wanted to use your (friggen fantasist!) technique.... but not use these as masks, I'm going to use them as a halloween decor, do I have to do the tape and fabric step? Your tutorials are awesome!

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you can just leave the foam head inside the mask, but if you want to remove the burlap from your armeture I would use the tape, but not the fabric. Thanks for compliment!!!

      One last question, both your links for burlap coffee bags don’t seem to work for me. Could you provide a link to bags that have a fun seam like the ones you have? Thank you!

      I cant seem to find single bags by themselves but if you use my kit store link for the multiple bags that works.

    How much time would you say it took the caulk to dry?

    • @Rawfires
      @Rawfires  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      dry time varies depending mostly on how thick it is. too thick it will never cure. Wait 3-5 days and cut off. if you notice it's still a little stinky. Hang it by the neck with pant hanger. the pant hanger let's it stay open and in shape.

    Why didn't you use a template for the mask by using an old sheet or something similar, then you could us it to cut around the burlap, you wouldn't have so much waste, you may have been able to get another two masks out of that sack, if these sacks are so hard to come by.

    • @Rawfires

      Linda Rogers that’s not a bad idea. I typically use the scrapes to make the gloves
