    Marcus aurelius said something like: "it never ceases to amaze me how much we love ourselves more than anyone, but value the opinions of others more than our own".
    Stoicism really is the western Taoism.

      Asking "what is the meaning of life?" makes as much sense as asking "what is the meaning of water??"
      Life isn't a concept, but we constantly confuse the map with the territory, the menu with the meal.

    I’ve been feeling really low on life, like I don’t belong anywhere, anymore. The part where you said, comparing yourself to others then creating a perfect image of yourself, which doesn’t exist and when you die, the image dies with us.
    There really is no point.
    I fully understand this now, it was in front of me this whole time. Thank you. You’ve really helped me.

    I’ve always been scared of rejection that I remove myself before I can even be accepted by others. It is crazy that I am trying to protect a self image of being too boring to be accepted that I have cut myself off from connecting with others. I feel like I have such a hurdle in front of me.. to be able to be social and connect on a level of basic human need.. but have the additional courage to see beyond the self image trap so many us face. I have been listening to you for a while and the teachings resonate when I sit, but I have such resistance to truly embodying this in the everyday and facing my strongest ego grips. May I be able to let go of self image and rest as the face before all our ancestors. Thank you Jason for all of your work to keep pointing us to Truth🙏🏼

    A couple years back I had CBT therapy that was a game changer for a almost year long spiral of depression and worry . But after all that lifted I left the UK with only £1000 and went into Europe for just over a year and had the most incredible experience that was exactly as this desired state in the video described. I came back to the UK eventually, got a job, apartment , relationship and I was back to how I was before . Taoism /this video has helped me to reply understand what brought me into that state and what ended it . Thanks x

    Jason, it’s so true.. I struggle with this because I have a TH-cam channel and it’s important for me to maintain an image because of “brand”. As I go forth and find more success in numbers I find myself watching other channels in my niche less and less. When I just focus on my own content and what I want to be I’m able to project the purest version of myself and not feel I’m always competing or having to emulate for “success”.. but I’m sure you know that it’s difficult to become a public figure in what you profess and also be that purest version. I believe it’s especially important for people in the the TH-cam communities to disconnect because we always have hundreds or even thousands of people talking at us and giving praise, criticism, complaints, etc.. It can be difficult to let these things go and not dwell when people are hateful, or want something from you.

    • @JasonGregoryAuthor
      @JasonGregoryAuthor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said my friend. Thank you for your very thoughtful comment. We can all relate for sure. It definitely is not natural to be exposed to numerous people's opinions, so we should all tread carefully and try not to take any of the hate personally because hateful and negative comments are more about the commenter than the creator.

    How do you eschew other peoples' images of you when your physical survival depends on social approval? I don't want to care about peoples' images of me and never have had that desire, but as I grew older the weight of obligation felt larger. It felt as if I couldn't do the simplest thing, be economically independent, unless I ascribed to all of these scripts and identities. The presence of people doesn't feel like connection, they just feel like pressure and programming. I don't *have* to survive, but if I fully allowed myself to believe that I would let myself die, and somehow that doesn't feel right.

  • @chrismoulten5605
    @chrismoulten5605 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    thank you for the video but i do have a question, if you don't have a self image then do you let people treat you like a door mat? it really doesn't matter because you know who you are?

    • @Ozoal
      @Ozoal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not that much that you'd let them treat you badly. It's just that what they think or do should be irrelevant to your well being.
      Though, if someone attacks you physically, you'd probably need to act in order defend, or at least shelter, yourself.

    • @JasonGregoryAuthor
      @JasonGregoryAuthor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Chris. Great question. That would only be a concern/fear from the perspective of self-image. Once you free yourself from the self-image then you free yourself from those fears and are indifferent to others trying to treat you like a door mat. You won't suffer from others ill will. You understand that they are just handicapped by their own self-image and instead of trying to maintain such relationships, you can distance yourself from them because your self-image has downregulated and doesn't need them to validate an image that doesn't exist. I mean I could go on and on, but I think you got the picture.
