    Gotta say I’ve watched all your videos and they’re great. I’m a decorator who can plaster to a pretty good standard but I’m still learning and trying to improve and the concise advice you give will definitely help. Cheers mate

    I enjoyed the video, many thanks - could you elaborate on your last tip (know your limits) where you mention tapping and feathering - I assume you mean splitting the job in two? A video on doing this would be helpful - keep up the good work

    When you say “taping and feathering it in” is there any videos with this technique being demonstrated? As this is what led to me giving up plastering all together as I ended ruining a ceiling by tackling too much at once, if I had just done sections and feathered it in then I would still be a plasterer today as I enjoyed the career, any help welcome

    Board finish sets a touch quicker than multi ? Decent meterage 👍 I think my limit is around 30-40m for one set. Maybe a big ceiling or some nice open walls. I struggle more messing around in a loft conversion for example doing numerous little bits all over the place, that seems to be harder work and less area achieved.

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh I would agree with that. About 20-30min faster. The m² rate is about the same for me on my own. Over 40 m² is not easy without implementing a few extra tricks.
      Totally agree with the small fiddly sets. Absolute pain in the neck. These walls were about 80 m² a side. Because it was so open it was pretty easy. Just the height made it hard work.

      Good graft pal. So many things to consider on a big gauge, temperature, surface, direct sun, or wind/ draft. Good advice on the side to side spat , so as not to create a ramp in your work. 👍

    Very informative video, I look forward to more videos from yourself. I’m new into plastering so I’m spreading plaster on a small wall (3 meters by 2.5m) takes me about 20 minutes. So I’m having to flatten the wall right after I’v laid. Can I ask on flattening my first coat can add a little water to the wall just to help me flatten the wall a bit easier? Cause I find that the plaster is starting to set by the time I finished putting my first coat on. Hope that made sense.

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the feedback. Generally you shouldn’t need to tbh, plaster should last about 40min before its gone in the bucket. Rather than using water, i would suggest the following. 1. Use extra time. 2. Try starting with slightly smaller sets. 3. Concentrate on applying the plaster neater. The longer the stroke the neater it will be if you can do thins you wont need to spend so much time flattening. This is easier when you slow down, take your time.

    How does the taping off a section of wall work if you have to leave it and come back to the job say the next day? Do you tape off before leaving it at the end of the day or tape the next day? 👍👀

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure if I totally understand the second half of the qs. But generally I try and do both sections in the same day. (Tbh we very rarely split a section as we mostly work domestic)
      However if coming the next day you would want to PVA the join, and you remove the tape usually just after the second wet trowel. Hopefully this answers your qs.

    Does a diy plasterer need to buy one an expensive trowel to make a difference to the results?

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally you why what you pay for. Trowels tend to vary in cost a bit. Generally if your not looking to spend to much have a look a second hand one online. Places like eBay. You can pick up a worn in MT for £20ish.

    Hello mate another fantastic video. What do you use to seal your walls? Primer wise?

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matt
      Thanks for your feedback.
      On this job we didn’t as it’s on new plasterboard. Where it was feathered in, watered down PVA, 2 coats.
      On reskims. Depends on the surface.
      Generally
      50/50 PVA Bluegrit. (Although I have used green grit recently.)
      If I need it to go off fast, watered down PVA, (2 coats)
      Very porous, like old sand and cement SBR

    • @matthewbuck1604
      @matthewbuck1604 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexMorleyPlastering the green plasterers pre grit is really good 👍 and it’s cheaper than pva. Some of the old school spreads are dead against pre grits, was getting your opinion on it.

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be totally honest, we prefer pre-grits, but not applying them “neat” as they are a pain to apply abs takes ages to dry.
      Also, the only time i have had issues with prep is on PVA. (Although this is my fault as I’m usually trying to hit the wall to early. Plaster starts to slide.)
      Although I haven’t found the green grit cheaper, we have found it ALOT more dear. Very odd. ☹️☹️☹️ thanks for your support on the channel. It’s much appreciated.

      @@AlexMorleyPlastering I'm guessing it means plastering over a line of tape and then removing it afterwards to form a hard straight edge in the plaster? And then when you come to plaster the remainder of the wall, you plaster up to that hard edge and try to blend it in? Is that roughly right?

  • @grantlittle456

    Thanks, good video. I have a big wall I need to do but won’t be able to finish it one set. So I will need to join my second set to my already dry first set. Is there any tips for a situation like this?

    • @AlexMorleyPlastering
      @AlexMorleyPlastering  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally if I have to join on to, then I would attempt a rolling set. So apply the 1 coat of the 2nd set after the 1st wet trowel of the 1st set.
      When putting the first coat on, come about an inch short of the plaster your trying to blend to. Only go up to the plaster on the 2nd coat. But keep it tight. After that, apply the same principle you use for feathering out. Wash out the plaster, and use fat to keep achieve a seamless finish. Hope this helps.

    Actually, i always plastered the large walls the same way i did the smaller walls.
    It just takes longer due the the amount of material used on large walls as opposed to smaller walls. lol
