I have also experimented a little with converting videos with bad quality to HD. I've also tried Movie Maker like you, but the problem with MM was that the files became too big and it wasnt possible to change the aspect ratio. Then I tried out some other converting programs and the best one for me was Xilisoft's. With Xilisoft's program you could change everything you wanted (aspect ratio, bitrate, resolution etc.). You can see the result in my "Blink 182 Pepsi smash" video...
