Dr Grande, you gained more huge respect from me for your balanced, honest analysis of one of my (now fallen) heroes. THANK YOU for not adding pain to those of us whose hearts were broken that our spiritual leader had feet of clay. Thank you for avoiding snide and snarky comments as many others have given. Ravi is a perfect example of why we are to put our faith in Jesus, not in humans.

Dr. Grande, your comparison with a criminal cop is spot on. From a Christian standpoint it is exactly the same. We know what is requiered but we sometimes find "reasons" to not obey God which is always a bad choice. That does not mean that we can not share true divine truth. There have always been such "carnal" Christians. That is why Paul is warning us to live after the flesh.
RZ already stood or stands before God, his Judge. Therefore we don't have to try to judge RZ. And let us not forgive that all of us is in need to be saved by grace through faith until we make our last breath.

About 10 years ago I attended a talk by Zacharias on a university campus in my home town. The audience was impressed with his brilliant apologetics and philosophy. What a tragic disappointment he turned out to be. Eloquence need not be conflated with piety. There was a very well spoken man in my church who was invited by the pastor to give sermons. He preached brilliantly. Just one slight problem: he was incesting two of his children. He was exposed, banished from the church, and his wife divorced him, got full custody of their 5 kids, and took possession of their homestead and business. He wound up losing everyone and everything of value to him.

Billy Graham always said he would never allow himself alone in a room with a woman who wasn’t his wife. There’s a reason for this of course. Being a “man of God” doesn’t mean you are above sexual temptation. Although he was never brought to justice here on earth, Mr. Zacharias will have to answer for his actions in a court that bears far more grievous consequences.

  • @hikerlarrypackgoaterrobins8575

In my mind, his misdeeds does not invalidate his message. He was a great thinker and a great apologist. That having been said, it has been incredibly disappointing to have these allegations come forth and apparently be true. Those of us who loved and honored him are extremely hurt that he would fall prey to these behaviors that are so bloody common to man. Billy Graham still stands out for his insistence that he always be accompanied by another man, in order to provide both protection and accountability.

I'm a doctor (of medicine). Some medical schools have given out honorary medical degrees, but you cannot use them to practice medicine. An honorary degree is far different from spending years becoming educated to an approved standard, or in the case of a PhD (a real doctor) such as yourself, the requirement to also teach (the word doctor is from the Latin meaning "to teach.") perform research, then write and defend a dissertation. Passing himself off as a doctor was dishonest, and purposely so. Your balanced analysis was, as always, excellent. You mix in some subtle humor in just the right places. Also, you realized that his bad acts may not diminish his message. Any of us who are parents realize we often fall short of perfection, but that does not make good teaching to our children less valid. My wife and I happen to be Catholic, and no, the Pope can't determine who goes to heaven or hell (Never was taught that he could). Priests validly confer the sacraments even in the state of mortal sin. If the priest intends on conferring the sacraments properly or preaching faithfully he does so validly, but perhaps not licitly. The message is still good, even though the messenger sucks (and so many of them do). You are wise, and the force is with you! Best wishes.

As a Catholic I always admired Ravi Zacharias and encouraged friends to listen to him. I thought his arguments for theism and the Christian faith were very good. I once saw him speak in person. However, being Catholic and knowing what our church has gone through I knew this happens more times than not. I feel terrible and pray for the women who were just trying to make a living. They are victims of a man who at the least committed sexual misconduct and who was obviously a fraud, living a double life.

Ravi and his wife attended our Missionary Alliance Church back in the 80's. But we rarely saw Ravi. He was always away.
They asked him to preach on Sunday night, so he did. But it wasn't about the Bible; just human philosophy. I wondered, what's the point.
I'm sorry for the way Ravi chose to go in. I can't imagine the pain this must be for them.
Was Ravi a true Christian? A lot have agonized over this question.
Only God knows Ravis' true heart. But I know what it's like when I fail the Lord. I've known Him for 48 years.
Throughout those years, I've failed the Lord many times; felt His gentle rebuke, and His fiery rebuke. But I always hated my sin. I ran from it. Because if I didn't, God's Word would be like a burning Sword into my heart. 😥
God is abundant in mercy. He convicts of sin - brings you to tears - then comforts our broken hearts and counts our tears.
That is the historical path of true Christianity, when people understood their sins bring guilt before God and very serious consequences to those who treat God with contempt.
But this??? To just continue in a never-ending obsession with sex, and abusing others with such cruel manipulation; and still think you're a true servant of God? When pigs fly. 🐷
There's nothing new about this. It was shocking because Ravi came in under the Banner of true Bible churches. And we've become far too gullible and easily led, to recognize any wolf or know what to do if we find one.
    Acts 20:29-31
"I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock."
"Even from your own number, men will arise and distort the Truth 📜 in order to draw away disciples after them."
"So be on your guard. Remember that for three years, I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears."
"Now I commit you to God and to the Word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified."

Aside from his rare use of Scripture and his affirmative nod to Mormonism, I began to feel uneasy with his habit of name dropping and love for being associated with prestigious institutions and people. When I eventually learned that he hadn’t earned a legitimate doctoral degree, I could no longer listen to him. I do think he wrote some excellent books and will keep one of my favorites.

Ravi was a great apologist. We really enjoyed his work. We are very sad for all the victims. God, help his victims and anyone who put any faith in this fallible man. I pray he sought forgiveness for his perverse ways.

I liked your perspective on his followers and how they can reconcile their faith in his message with the bad deeds he did. Reminds me of the Nietzche quote: “There is a false saying: “How can someone who can’t save himself save others?” Supposing I have the key to your chains, why should your lock and my lock be the same?”

The messenger does not necessarily negate the message. But I think what's more important here is that A) leaders need to be accountable and B) people need to investigate the claims of leaders instead of solely relying on the word of the leader. Leader worship will almost always leave you wanting.

All very sad, I often listened to his messages and podcasts, but my faith stands on the finished work of Jesus Christ not any human. The truth in all his messages are still by definition....... still truth!

When I was out committing adultery behind my family’s back, I always felt that Grace would cover me because I was a Christian. No matter what I did with other women, I felt that God would forgive me because his word says he will. He does, but there’s a universal law of the Universe that I never took into account: You cannot scoop fire in your lap and not be burned. Since those days,.....I have been burned, disciplined and crashed more times than I can count. It’s been 13 yrs and even as you read this I am STILL paying the price for my sin.
I just cry in the dark. 😕

      Let that stuff go completely!
Do not mentally drag the past with you.
Live in this moment and forget the past.
Just learn from it and dump the thoughts and images.
In this moment you are born again like a carefree child.
Don't fuel the ego as a victim or victimizer.
You are new and pristine in this moment!
You are eternal spirit, dont allow the primitive ego to obscure it any longer!

This situation was heart breaking to a lot of Christians. Ravi was not one of the teachers I particularly looked up to but I HAVE listened to a lot of his material and appreciated his views. As a Christian myself, I tried to be gracious when the first allegations started to come out (this was BEFORE the evidence of everything came out). We all have things we struggle with and we can't expect teachers to be any different. But once the report was released showing that he wasn't just sleeping around but actually ABUSED and took advantage of these women, I was shocked. This mans material, no matter how much he contributed to Christianity, should be erased and I don't understand the people who are still defending him. I can understand the disappointment and confusion of those who came to Christianity bc of his teachings but this is just too much. The most disgusting part of this (from a Christian point of view) was the fact that he manipulated these women with their faith and actually PRAYED with them, thanking God for the opportunity to abuse them. Horrible, awful man. I can't wait for the Christian community to put Ravi Zacharias behind us and move forward with teachers who reflect the lifestyle we teach.

Outwardly he behaved like and praised Jesus. Secretly he denied Jesus by his actions all the way to the grave and was more like 'his father' then his brother Jesus. Dont worry about Christ sheep, they know His voice and will not follow a stranger!

This kind of behavior is fairly common among Evangelical preachers like Bakker, Copeland, White and others who appear to be in the ministry for power over others, and, of course, the money and other gratifications. The Protestant Reformation came about to oppose the corruption of Christianity they saw being perpetrated by the Roman Church. However when looking at the corruption of the Evangelical ministry we can see that Protestantism has followed the same path of worldly corruption that they once condemned. One of the main abominations seen by Martin Luther was the sale of salvation [indulgences], and that is exactly what many Evangelical pastors are doing, offering salvation for money and a princely lifestyle.

Bravo! Bravo! These devils must be stopped, and the communities must stop letting them hide and carry on.

Chillax, do you want to pretend Ravi's lectures no longer exists? Christianity is about facing troubles and dealing with them. The man was flawed, as are we all. Stop virture signalling, deal with the realities of life.

I was a casual listener to Ravi’s recorded messages.I distinctly remember approximately 5 years ago, hearing something he said that seemed very odd, even suspicious for a “man of God.” He was speaking at an event and casually mentioned that he sometimes flies to Thailand alone, to rest and meditate. I thought that was strange that he would travel to Thailand ALONE! Thailand is generally a lovely country with even lovelier people, but it’s also a nation that has a high level of sex trafficking! So it immediately gave me pause. And further, why would he even mention that in public?!? After saying a quick prayer for Zacherias, I listened to the rest of the recording. Fast forward years later to 2020, after hearing about the accusations of sexual impropriety, I was initially shocked. Then I remembered hearing about the Thailand trips he’d make by himself, and, along with the 12 page attorneys report, I concluded that it was probably true. Besides the women that he abused, the biggest victims in all of this is his wife and family!! Terrible.
