I prefer the way only because I can type it faster and it does the same thing. As for your question about the frames just use posterize time as an expression or effect. Enjoy.
well thank you kindly sir. Your patronage is much appreciated. And enjoy wedding season! I'm told it's one of the most lucrative for small video production businesses.
I have my hand in about 5 different businesses (I dont like working for the man) my graphic design skills (or lack there of) have been mostly bartered for compensation in the products my friends sell rather than cash. I have no illusions of granduer, especially since anything I do is usually just tracing off step by step tutorials such as yours - but its cool to get the oohs and ahhs from friends. Appreciate your work. Thanks for making me look like that guy
You, sir, are an angel. I'm a beginner. I just watched your video and it was really helpful but it was so hard I want to punch a wall. Or flip a table.
Jill Raga I'm not sure if angels make people want to flip tables. Or maybe this is an old testament kind of angel here to challenge your faith. Wasn't lucifer and angel once now that I think about it?
ECAbrams I'd like to thank you for sharing what you know especially since this is the kind of effect that I want for an AVP. Your video is fantastic and really helpful, sir. I'm just really having a hard time following advanced stuff. Haha
Dude you're so amazing ! The thing is that i'm making a videoclip of a song i've done with my friends and every single tutorials that you've make are usefull for my vid ! I even bought the chromatic abberation ! I'll use this one too ! Thank you or as we say in Canada , Merci !
An awesome tutorial Mr. Abrams... I am pretty much a novice but managed to complete everything you did and did a little more wiggling around myself... Thanks very much..! If I can I will post my vid here...
How did you tweak the audio to sound like it was really old like that. It reminds me of those old school informational videos featuring Timmy! It was always Timmy!
I would say I eke out a living. Not many freelancers get to where I'm at certainly, and many are barristas first and designers second. But I suppose i could go over some of my client winning strategies in a vlog down the road. One of the big reasons I'm successful though is that's I have made terrible sacrifices in other areas of my life to accomplish my business goals.
I'm posting this question as I watch the video. I don't know if you answer it later on. But is there any particular reason that you chose to use random()*100 instead of random(0,100). This gives a random number on each frame, how would I change the expression to give a random number every other or change every 5 frames?
Younger couples (the instagram generation) will love this effect for their videos. Apparently, it's cool to look like you were married on the same day as your parents. TIME WARP!
Hello, I have a film idea that I need to shot from the actor's POV which have a scene to shot in front of mirror. How can I reflect the actors body in the mirror? help me plz
Great tutorial as usual! Although a little bit confused by those expressions, especially the array ones. Will definitely replay a couple of times. I'm curious about the sfx of the intro video. I mean, how to make that electronic, old-school sound? Also, are those vertical lines going to stick at a certain width? What if I want those to wiggle a bit on the left, and then shift to the right and just continue wiggling? Amazing tutorials, many thanks. Soy
The voice in the intro was altered in audition and I just used am EQ preset to make it sound like "old time radio". As to the vertical lines I suppose if you wanted to put expressions on width or any other property you could. If you want to build in repeating patters of things look at the "loopOut" expression. But you'll likely need keyframes if you want put in events of some kind to the flow.
Hi, would really like to know how to do the opening effect where your face shows through the text but is contrasted from the footage. Thank you so much!
Great tutorial! As a beginner, I pulled it off! Was wondering how you got the text to have that effect? I tried the "difference" mode and "overlay" but neither seemed to look like yours. Thanks!
i understand premiere well enough to not need a full tutorial, and I know you don't want to do a full tutorial on it, so could you just give me the effects and settings you used to get the sound? thanks!
Hi ECA, love your tutorial ! one thing i can't do, at 5:20 in your video, you go to the pen tool. As you click it, the fill and stroke buttons appear top of your screen, but not mine.. any ideas ?
+Marcus St. John just found what i was doing wrong. i tried clicking in a blank part of the preview window, taking the focus away from the solid. somehow that worked :)
Hey there, so I applied all these changes and everything looks great-- except the orange background colour that I applied to my original composition (it has no video footage) has been replaced with white (I made the dust and scratches black). Could you let me know how to get the background colour back? Great tutorial!
The dust grain doesn't show up on the footage as an alpha. It looks good on the black solid I created it with, but can't see it as dust on my actual footage. Couple years ago for you now, but any help?
When I click on random seed it creates a key frame, how do I type an expression? Edit: My bad, I was supposed to hold the "Alt" button while clicking on "Random seed"
if it's not just there you may have to click "toggle switches/modes" to toggle looking at the switches or the modes. And if that doesn't work... consult the adobe help file.
This tutorial was really great! But I have a question. The dusty stuff is moving way too fast. Is there anyway to make it slow down? I'm using it for a music video. Is making the dust follow along with the audio possible? I'm a noob with After Effects btw lol
I know your comment is 7 months old but this may help anyone with the same problem. In the same expression box for the fractal noise, put a semi colon at the end of the random expression and go up a line and use the expression: " posterizeTime(x); " where x would be a number. The lower the number the slower it goes, I found 6 was good for my use!
speaking of helping our careers or hobbies, how about a tutorial on filthy lucre. How did Evan Abrams become the AE industrialist titan, multi-billionaire Canadian dollar extraordinaire he is today?? I'd like a step by step tutorial on how to sell my creations and be able to feed my beer habit. Seriously, how do you pull jobs and actually make coin? Just curious how you rope in clients. I dont have the wallpaper, I just learn from youtube :)
That depends on what you're using Ae to do. Generally more RAM is always good. Ae is a RAM hungry beast. Also it's the least expensive of the 3 to do, so I always recommend starting there when looking to upgrade. That being said if you intend to do 3d stuff or leverage GPU acceleration you will want that powerful GPU and specifically one from the Ae approved GPU list. As for the processor, that's typically the least of concerns but as Ae gets more intricate and uses more processes it'll be more important.
I wanna just export the grains and scratches with a transparent background so that I can add it to a video. However, there is a white background that I can't get rid of on the effect itself. Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried exporting it as a PNG sequence (RGB+Alpha) yet it still has a white background with no transparency.
im still using this tutorial from like 9 years ago now what an amazing channel this was
I prefer the way only because I can type it faster and it does the same thing.

Thanks dude! That was just what I was looking for and just the way I wanted it to be explained. Much appreciation!
I think it was eq 1940s and multiband compression old radio? Or i think that's what they were called.
Great Job Abrams.. This is very inspiring and my first understanding of how expressions could be used. Thank you and God bless you...
The best tutorial which explains that old-film-stuff
Best tutorial about Dust and Scratches I have watched so far. Great job!
You are amazing, love your tutorials and humor in them!!!
Another excellent tutorial.... Will defiantly use this method on a dance video I'm working on.... cheers dude and keep them coming
This is perfect! Exactly what we needed! Thank you!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL!! It really saved my documentary project, u are the best at explaining after effects!!
You, sir, are an angel. I'm a beginner. I just watched your video and it was really helpful but it was so hard I want to punch a wall. Or flip a table.

Dude you're so amazing ! The thing is that i'm making a videoclip of a song i've done with my friends and every single tutorials that you've make are usefull for my vid ! I even bought the chromatic abberation ! I'll use this one too ! Thank you or as we say in Canada , Merci !
I just downloaded the project file for a donation, works and looks great! (I use Premiere CC 2020)
This this perfect, in fact all are perfect, you are still doing a great good for humanity!
learned more from this guys than any class I been in.
Thanks I just ended up doing basically the same thing but in audition. It really adds to the picture.
An awesome tutorial Mr. Abrams... I am pretty much a novice but managed to complete everything you did and did a little more wiggling around myself... Thanks very much..! If I can I will post my vid here...
Because this is amazing, I donated $5. I'll be sure to use this for a highlight video I'm cutting from some wedding footage I shot last night.
I think adding old projector or grain noise will make it look more realistic
How did you tweak the audio to sound like it was really old like that. It reminds me of those old school informational videos featuring Timmy! It was always Timmy!
Great tutorial .... you get to the point and make it clear .. nice one
Amazing tutorial, thanks!
Thanks!
Really, really good tutorial. Thanks so much dude!
Great tutorial. This is very helpful.I learned how to do lot of great stuff through this vid.Thank you very much. :)
sounds like golden age syndrome. But I do enjoy many aspects of the cultural shift to embrace the novelty of the historical.

Really good tutorial. SUBSCRIBED!
I think I just set the text to be Add or some other blending mode. Not much to it I'm afraid.
thanks for the tutorial, even after watching I still grabbed your file. Thank you. My next video will be used with it.
This tutorial ROCKS! Thank you so much!
+Kristy Fricker you are welcome and thanks for saying so.

Hey there! Nice tip! I've been trying to find a nice look for a fashion film I'm making, guess an old film look will fit just nicely!
thank you, been looking for this
Outstanding job sir! although I am a beginner. I was able to to recreate the shutter effect. Thank you for the knowledge.
great tutorial, multiple things learned.
Awesome as always.
This is great! Very helpful
Thanks, this was very useful tutorial!
When does the thing happen in that video?
Younger couples (the instagram generation) will love this effect for their videos. Apparently, it's cool to look like you were married on the same day as your parents. TIME WARP!
Thanks for your tuturial! Very great!!!

Hi, would really like to know how to do the opening effect where your face shows through the text but is contrasted from the footage. Thank you so much!
just a couple eq and compressions presets in premier. Nothing to it really.
Thank you for this tutorial, it helped me very much :)))
good work
Great tutorial! As a beginner, I pulled it off! Was wondering how you got the text to have that effect? I tried the "difference" mode and "overlay" but neither seemed to look like yours. Thanks!
I may have used add and changed the opacity. It was some time ago now.

I had issues with that too but I realized I hadn't made the "Shape Layer" before drawing the first scratch.

What about the sound - like the crackling and popping you often get in old B Movies. How d'you do that?!
Thanx dude :)
Amazing! thank you!
dope dope as usual.....
Thanks!
thanks man. good tip.
My grain (fractal noise) seems to be moving too quickly. Solution?
He shows it off at about 0:35
The video is an effects breakdown so you should see it pop up with text underneath for each effect
Perfect
thanks alot
thanks man!

Can you do a tutorial about Retro / VHS look ?
I suppose anything is possible.
Anyone else notice he sounds like Edward Snowden? Soothing voice for tutorials for sure.
I love you
I want to find track matte in left pannel can you help me please ?
if it's not just there you may have to click "toggle switches/modes" to toggle looking at the switches or the modes. And if that doesn't work... consult the adobe help file.

hey man for AE to run smoother should i get a better GPU or a better processor/more RAM?
