good assessment Alex. i am 55 years old and living in Canada for 53 of those years and married to a Philipina who has been living in Canada for 30 years. i would like to retire in Mediterranean Europe (Balkans) instead of Asia as I like the Mediterranean climate and lifestyle. the weather here really sucks around the great lakes in both countries, Canada and the USA.

I am Filipino - Canadian, living in Toronto. Like most of people from the Philippines and other developing countries, Canada and the likes was a dream country for me. Life was great. I got my Canadian citizenship 4 years ago but even before I got it, I was already getting bored living here. Like what Alex has said, Canada is great and safe country but you need to work you @ss off in order to live a comfortable life (but limited work life balance). Before the pandemic I was already thinking of moving back to the Philippine or move somewhere in Latin American country (Mexico or Colombia) where culture and warm hospitality ae quite similar to the Philippines. Then the pandemic happened and many things has changed. Life here is getting so stressful. Joblessness and homelessness are all time high. Canada is now facing with mental health crisis, random attacks are happening everywhere, in the subway and public places. Also the current political landscape is adding so much stress in the lives to most immigrants. Not o mention the racial discrimination that you may encounter (which I have experienced several times). Honesttly, if you already have comfortable life in the Philippines, I wouldn't reccomend selling your assets to immigrate here. I've realized that the life in the Philippines is so much better if you already have good savings and sustainable in come. Unless your main purpose is to raise your kids and get better education or you're escaping violence, war or prosecution. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. But I refuse to be part of the rest in any country. I'm not saying it's only in Canada. .My passport is my biggest flex., and couldn't be more proud. For me it's more about cost of living at the moment and prioritizing travel. My choice isn't thr right thing for everyone. Just for me at the moment

Everyone faces “racism” in every part of the world. Canada is a boring hell hole, but it’s anything but racist to foreigners. In fact, it brainwashes “White” Canadians to self-hate themselves and worship “people of colour” (a term racist in itself). If you faced any negative treatment it’s not because of your race. 🤦‍♂️ It’s because no matter where you go in this world you will face negative treatment for a plethora of reasons by individuals who don’t like you. Grow up.

After completing my studies in Canada and the Philippines, I am contemplating returning to my home country, Cebu Philippines. The competitive nature of life in Canada has made it difficult to fully enjoy and appreciate the experiences. Maintaining a decent standard of living often requires working multiple jobs or earning a high hourly wage of around $50.

Same here! I moved from Canada to the Philippines in 2019. I have been living here in Manila on the SRRV (retiree visa). Best decision I ever made. I am never going back to Canada, not to live, not to visit, not even a connecting flight. I am much happier here in the Philippines, with zero tax in my foreign income, great weather, friendly people. In Canada they think I am a terrorist. Here in the Philippines I am valued and respected.

      1. You can't lose your citizenship regardless of how long you are abroad (you can however lose your permanent residency if you're not yet a citizen and travel more than 3 years within a 5 year period)

Joy and peace is written all over you. Life is stressful in Canada. It is October now, the price of food has gone up. Canada is very stressful and depressing. It is all about working paying bills and getting caught up in crazy traffic. I spend 3 hours daily in traffic. I can't stand this anymore. You are lucky you don't have family. For those with families, it is tough to just buy ticket and leave but we will eventually leave. We can't continue like this anymore.

I'm a filipina living here in Metro Manila for a decade now. I work from home here and I went back to my hometown which is Bacolod a couple of weeks ago. It's been 7 years since I went back due to many reasons. My hometown has improved a lot in terms of infrastructures but the people like my neighbors are still the same. The sense of community is still there and I talked with my neighbors. we missed each other. Here in Metro Manila, it's also the same. My nieghbors and I know each other, we share food everytime we have birthdays and I love it. I'm saying that aside from the beauty of the islands, it is the filipino people that keeps me staying in my country. I can easily go abroad since I;m a registered nurse and I already passed the necessary exams for a nurse, but I chose to stay here because the goods outwiegh the bad.
Life is not always about money. I can earn dollars in the US or other countries, but I won't be able to have a life since neighbors there don't know each other. Individualism is just not my thing.

I’m a Filipino who is now a Canadian citizen but I felt a huge shift after having to go through the lockdown.
I’m reevaluating everything now and working towards returning back home.
Why put value so much on money if you don’t find any joy and meaning in what you do?
Burn out is real and the more I ask my family and friends the more I feel the pull of living a simpler way of life in my own terms.

As a native Filipino who came from real poverty and now earning around $1000 a month, I know it's still small compare to Canada's salary but I can say without hesitation that I really enjoy my life here in my motherland, I can do my hobbies like collecting action figures and still save enough money for my future house, Foreigners might consider me poor but I have everything that I need in life for now minus stress. I'm living in a safe place, I can afford good food, I have Internet, a working PC and a cool Wife. You're right, the time here and life in general is very slow but that's also the reason why we're able to cherish every seconds of it. Best wishes to your journey and Goodluck! 👍👍👍❤❤

As a fellow Canadian I'm giving some thought to tossing it all in here myself - my circumstances are considerably different from yours but my views are similar. As a retiree who has a comfy home, good pensions and savings with no debt hanging over me, I guess I should consider myself on easy street but nowadays I find I am tired of paying, paying, paying for this lifestyle, with costs rising all the time. I'm sick of long winters, which I used to be able to largely escape until Covid came along - I can truthfully say that if I never saw snow again it wouldn't bother me in the least. It's going to cost me thousands of dollars just to heat my house next winter if these absurd fuel prices continue and I see no end to this - never mind the rising costs of food. I'm also sick of the countless rules and regulations, and with political correctness, everyone nowadays being so "offended" by things everybody would simply shrug off some years ago. I have no patience for all of the dating/social BS that we go through here in the west trying to find a suitable mate or even fling, especially at my age - as a veteran SE Asia traveller myself I am well aware of how easy it is to find company over there! We're supposed to have great medical service here in Canada, yet in my town I and many others have been without a family doctor for months or years because none seem to want to move to our community. This summer I will start downsizing and laying my own groundwork for a possible departure from a lifestyle and society that I have grown weary of - I look around at all of the stuff I have accumulated over my adult lifetime and I realize that most of it I really don't need or want anymore - maybe it's time to move on. Thanks for the video, Alex - I only disagree with one point you made when you mentioned our "great government" - today's Canadian government is appalling, no other words for it.

    • @Livingabroadalex
      @Livingabroadalex  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Love the name firstly. I'm glad to hear you're considering a better life for yourself, especially since you've travelled SE Asia cuz you know how easy it can be. As for the government, I don't a single thing about politics and can't care to educate myself on it to see how the gov screwed me and in what way. I guess I was comparing it to the government of the countries I recently visited Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Ph, Thailand etc.
Thank you for sharing your story and I wish you all the best and happiness.

I am a Filipino and this is the point that I always stress out to my family and friends back home in the Philippines. Canada is not the paradise they thought it is. it's a trap. when i get here, I felt I eas stuck in a rat race because I am mostly just keeping up with my bills because my job isn't paying that much. i told them that even homegrown Canadians get sick of the weather and the life in general here. it's not all rainy days. there are positive aspect ofcourse but living a simple life free from being chained to the rhythm of modern life is far more precious than money and material stuff.

I’m from Ontario as well. I’m 28 years old and I’m at the pinnacle of my career. I was lucky to land a high paying job in my field right after graduating with a good pension, benefits etc..when I was 22. I feel like I have always just been chasing the next level, or the money. It’s been tough and has come at a cost. Living in a different city on my own away from family and friends. Having to work long shifts including night shifts just ruins you. On top of that add winter for 5 or 6 months of the year and there’s no time left over. I’m a simple guy, no house no debt. I have a lot of money saved but I don’t even get to enjoy it. My family didn’t have a lot of money growing up and we were poor, maybe that’s the reason. I used to travel regularly before Covid and it was my outlet. I started a new work position and moved to a new city a month before Covid and I’m just bagged now and have not done anything. I maybe see myself doing something like you in the future but I’ve worked so hard to get to were I am that it’s almost like I’m trapped. I am very fortunate And grateful for what I have but its always been at the back of my mind. Lol and everything here is a rip off. $2 for a litre of gas now.

Interesting observations Alex. I've lived in Canada for 48 years but wasn't born here. Markets like YYZ and YVR are outrageously expensive to live in, although I've not lived in either but have family in both. Now near retirement age, I'm already in the process of downsizing and will sell my house and move to the PI hopefully by next year. My kids are mid-late 20's, so nothing is holding me back! One thing Filipinos and other new immigrants should know is yes, you can have a good life in Canada but with the cost of living near atmospheric levels you might think twice unless you're prepared to work hard at 2-3 jobs and have room mates or are a top 20% earner. Especially if you're starting out here without family support as a new immigrant. Sometimes the grass is not as green on the other side as you think it is. Then there's the 5 months of winter to deal with, except maybe YVR. I've personally had enough. It's not the same country it once was back in the 1970's, 80's or 90's. Much like the US.

Hey Alex...just got back to mtl after 4.5 months in the philippines. Although the heat, over population and cleanliness are negatives there. I must say I'm stressed out being back here! Back to the grind and taxe installments galore, 1.90 gas and gray skies... its hard to be fully happy but for now as long as I'm out of winter I'm glad😅

How ironic, I left 🇵🇭 in 2016, came here in Toronto as an intl. student worked my way till I got my PR only last year, doing the mundane 9-5 job and my stress reliever is watching youtube videos of foreigners like you enjoying 🇵🇭.. Sometimes it makes me think, did I make the right choices?? lol but hey I'm glad you appreciate living back there, I like foreigners like you who know how to appreciate the country, who try to immerse themselves in the culture and try to understand but not to compare and complain..Keep up the way you run your channel, honest and open eventually it'll grow now that you summonned the pinoys lol.. enjoy your time there while I envy you from here, cheers from your country 🇨🇦

hey man, nice contents. what set you apart as a blogger is that you ask personal questions to random people around the streets. we don't usually get to see these with other travel vloggers. Keep doing this. I am living in Canada for 5 years and sad to say I never really fully satisfied in living here. I fully resonated with everything you said. Canada is a great country but yes it comes with a cost. And the greatest cost that is at stake was my mental health. I hate the weather. hate it hate it hate it. But now am about to head back home in Cebu in August 2022 this year. 3 months more. im so exited. hope I could bump on ya on the streets. 🎉❤❤

If you can accept the people and the culture (good and bad) then you are in the right place! ! Cebu is a nice balance not too fast and not too slow! Modern city but plenty of nature to relax and breathe in! Enjoy and LIVE LIFE!

I totally get what you are saying. Although the salary isn't as great in the Philippines, the cost of living is also less. I'm not saying things are cheap, it just depends where you go and buy things. Filipinos in general work hard but they also know how to play. Family and friends are THE most important in our lives that's why you see families eat together at a dinner table or at least gather once a week if living separately. I wish you all the best and I hope you will be well settled and feel fulfilled living in the Philippines.

Tax is also one thing its too much taxes here. Weather makes it worse (winter) we also dont see ourselves doing this our entire life. We dont even have kids to start it cause its unaffordable. Hey man, I feel you. I'm also single with no kids, it doesn't make sense for me to buy property here and end up spending the rest of my life paying for it while other costs of living rise at an absurd pace at the same time. Healthcare might be free but honestly it's overrated considering you'll have to wait for months for that checkup and everything else after that. Considering what you're paying for with your hard earned dollars... it can definitely go a longer way in other places.
I'm just glad I've grown my savings in all of the years I've worked here. Looking forward to moving back home in 2025 to be with family and spending what remaining time I have with my father who has Parkinsons.

That's what we inherited from the West. Almost eveeything is taken care of and planned out - health insurance, housing, living wages, education. But the moment you stop working, these things also stop coming.
Back in the days, my grandma didn't have work as we define it today. She earned a living by weaving and selling Nipa leaves (at her own time). But by today's standard, she would be considered poor because she had no house appliances, nice clothes, etc. Many times she didn't even wear underwear. In the morning, she would stand and hide behind a banana tree, with her legs straightend apart, and just let the pee flow. If she's lucky, she'd realize that the banana had fruits hanging above her. Then later in the day, she would pick the fruits and cook them for an afternoon snack. Life was much simpler then.

That was a genuine expression of your thoughts! Yes the West is becoming prohibitively expensive! You need a two income family to live now! If your single it’s way harder. I’ve decided to retire in 6 year’s when I’m 57 and will have a decent pension of around $4,000 plus another $1,600 when I turn 62. I want to save $300,000 plus put my kids thru college that’s why I’m delaying my retirement. If I had no kids I would already have thrown in the towel and left the rat-race behind . Canada is an expensive and hard-running 'work camp'. It's not a place to live-live. What you're saying is correct and it's good for people to know that if they choose to live in Canada they will have a 'work camp' lifestyle.. well there is no 'lifestyle' but you'll live with strangers splitting rent, work will be 90% of your day, week, thoughts and obligations and that's pretty much it.

I saw a Chinese TV ad on a Hong Kong channel, their 1pc Mcdonald's burger costs $61 HK Dollars, that's P421 Pesos. In the Philippines, it only costs P120 pesos ($2.5). So Dollars will go a long way here than in any place in Asia. Plus a great bonus of Kind, hospitable people, great places to visit (HUGE MALLS), and awesome food to try. He spent two years in British Colombia and Alberta. He also made many friends there which he is looking forward to seeing again. I understand how you feel travelling and describing your travel as well as promoting the places and countries. I worked for 50 years and missed seeing our kids growing up. It’s only now I am retired I can enjoy life the way you described yours. Here you don’t need a clock only a calendar to know what day it is. If WiFi is kind to me I can continue to follow you on TH-cam. We’re you able to salvage you phone? Regards

Thank you soo much for your support and sharing your story Gordon. I wish your son all the happiness and success in Canada. Wish you the same. Unfortunately I was not able to salvage the phone. I'm really upset because there was something very important to me that I can't get back and it's eating away at me especially today.
But lesson learned I guess backing everything to the cloud is the right way to go from now on.
      Thank you for asking

Hey Alex, Im considering the same move you did from Canada to the Philippines. My wife is a Filipina and we have two young kids. Im wondering as a non-Filipino Canadian like yourself, how did you manage to get PR there and live for an extended period of time there? Are you employed in the PH, work remotely for a Canadian company or own your own business? I currently work a remote job in Canada but wondering if I can keep my job and just live in the PH. If you can give me any advice based on your experience, I would really appreciate that!

Hi. Those are some important questions that require in depth answers. Consider "private jet" class in my channel memberships that includes a 1 hour video call with me to answer all your questions. I also offer 1 hour $100 consultation.
If that's not for you, then have a look through my videos for lots of information 😊

I think it comes down to, do you love your job and career?
Usually people who don’t are the ones who complain about their lives and want to live in another country.
I love travelling and I love Philippines, BUT I don’t see myself choosing to live there instead of Canada, maybe when I retire some day I would move there because I can live cheaper there with my pension, but not now, and this has nothing to do because I have a family now. Even when I was single and I travel the world for 15 years (mostly to Philippines), I never saw myself staying in any other country because I love my life in Canada, I love my career, I love that I can work anytime, anywhere and I don’t have someone watching me while I’m working, that’s why I can travel for 1 month or for 3 months or for 5 months or for 9 months like when I was stranded in Philippines during COVID.
I also love summers in Canada, the parties, the concerts, the festivals, camping during long weekends, the clean parks, the lakes, the nature, the road trips, I mostly travel during winter because I don’t want to miss the summers in Canada. I live in Canada for 30+ years and I probably live 2 years in Philippines…. Philippines is my number 1 country for vacation, Cuba is second…. But that’s it, for vacation not to live permanent. And for me it all comes down to quality of life (which by the way Canada has been number 1 in the world in quality of life for the last 4 or 5 years).
If you are happy with your job, friends, family, and you are living in a country that is number 1 in quality of life, what more can you ask for. Specially when your job allows you to travel for months during winter time and you get to have 2 summers every year and basically skip the cold winter!

Nice video! I kind of feel the same way. Here in Hawaii it’s not so bad compared to other states since we have a stronger Asian and multi ethnic influence which is more focused on family and less materialism but the rat race still exists and with the high cost of living Hawaii is becoming harder and harder to live just for essential needs resulting to high homeless populations and higher property crime rates over the past couple of years. My goal is to invest my money and hope it grows big one day and start allocating it to funds that generate good income like ETFs and REITS that pay a good dividend yield. Then I could probably travel the world like you and get my bills paid while living from country to country one day. That is my new dream! I no longer want to be part of the rat race. I recently spoke to my coworker during lunch that maybe having that higher salary doesn’t make me or anyone better off since tax brackets will be higher on that additional money you earn and the amount of work and stress is significantly higher than my current job so when you calculate the output and the net amount you are getting it’s probably not worth it in the end.

You should be an author. You've summarized exactly how I feel and expressed it perfectly. Sorry to hear about cost of living increase I Hawaii too. I hope you follow your dreams, and may they come true Jon 👍

@@Livingabroadalex lol thank you Alex for your kind words. One of the other channels who does astrology type of content that I follow who also happens to be a Scorpio told me I might be better off being an author or some kind of freelancer involved in creative long term projects that doesn’t feel rushed might prove more successful for me in the long run. In real life I did notice where I work (wealth management/banking) my colleagues and superiors have complimented me on how I write my emails and kind of made me the go to person to help them write emails addressing issues so maybe it’s something I should look into 🤔 I did have a coworker in the accounting department who quit his job and focused on just growing his TH-cam channel right now even though he doesn’t make much money, he took that leap of faith and really enjoys his life. Thank you for always making good content on TH-cam. I found your channel to be very inspiring which is something I actually really need right now with the current situation going on. I look forward to your future videos my friend.

You definitely have a way with words and expressing yourself. Very articulate even in paper. I'm happy to hear that these videos gives you a insight into some matters and that you find them inspiring. I'll be putting out more content and will also leap into dedicating myself more to the channel. See you tomorrow with a great video I'm excited to share about Bantayan Island 🏝
