I'm Erin Goettlicher, and I'm a professional softball coach. After I played through high school, I went out and played for college level, and then spent a cup of tea at the professional level. I'm self-employed, and own Pro Softball Training. Pro Softball Training offers instruction in all kinds of softball. You name it, we can do it. Today, I will be talking to you about softball. The game of softball and the game of baseball are very similar in a lot of ways but there is also a lot of differences. It's very similar in the object of the game; which is, two teams playing against each other with one team trying to score more runs than the other. Which ever team scores more wins the game. However, in softball, our field dimensions and equipment and strategies are slightly different. The biggest difference comes in the difference in the size of the ball. In softball we use a larger ball, either 11 or 12 inches. But baseball is only nine inches. Our field is also different; baseball fields the base-path are 90 feet apart, where in softball ours are only 60 feet apart. Our outfield fences are typically shorter as well, anywhere between 200 and 220 feet are pretty standard. And in baseball, as you probably know, are closer to 300's and 400's foot walls. The positions in baseball and softball are very similar, there's a pitcher a catcher, four infielders, and three outfielders. The biggest difference of course comes in the pitcher. In baseball we throw overhand and in softball we throw underhand. - กีฬา
So basically baseball is harder for batters and softball is harder on pitchers.
Pretty sure the arm motion that baseball pitchers have to engage in is more physically straining than softball pitchers
I came here from an episode of Young Sheldon. Coming from a non-American, it seems to me like the two games are basically the same. So why is it so gender segregated? Women's football is not different from men's football, women's hockey no different from men's hockey, women's basketball no different from men's basketball. But when it comes to baseball/softball, it basically seems like two variants each dominated by the respective gender. So strange to see.
I feel like they tried to make it “easier” for the girls. It’s weird. Baseball was one of America’s oldest most popular sports so maybe the ancient mindset of “girls can’t do the same” led to the creation of softball this way
@Wooded Roza I mean there is a big physical difference, for example it's common for the women's national football teams to lose against high ranking teams of 15 year old boys. But I don't quite understand why women don't play baseball in their own league instead of softball

Being closer bases doesn't make you faster then other people lol.
But it does make it so an infielder can miss a beat or the will not make the throw out.
Another difference is baseball=boys and softball= girls

Seems pretty odd that they took base, an existing game and made it easier for the females. Less running, bigger ball, bigger bat, under arm pitches. Was it invented by a man by chance?
I'm not into these games but I saw a fastpitch softball video and that looks crazy as hell

Everything you say has a alternate answer. Smaller infield makes lease reaction time, and harder to throw out runner in time. Bigger ball makes it heavier and harder to throw. Underhand pitching is by far harder to learn and do (try it).
Strike zone is bigger, pitching distance is 1.5 times closer which makes reaction time of 60mph like 90mph.
There's men that throw 85mph which is comparable to 114mph baseball pitch for timing.
If it's easier to hit then it's harder to pitch? Can't have it both ways.

@@itsurboidonnie Inside the US nobody takes the WNBA seriously, and outside the US even fewer women play pro basketball. Netball on the other hand is a bit more competitive at the pro level among women.
