They have a lot of grate teachers in the locksmithing community. The only sad part is that my generation doesn’t want anything to do with the trade. I see lock shops closing and selling there businesses left and right all bc the kids don’t want anything to do with it.
I'm a property manager and this is going to be a great extra source of income and savings! Thank you so much for the info. I'm getting all my tools this week to be able to re-key, master key and duplicate keys.
Interviewing for a locksmith position at a minimum security facility. Learning all the ins and outs or keying a lock or rekeying a lock from videos like yours are super helpful. Thank you!!
The biggest problem here is that you're using random keys. That's why you ended up with a #1 master pin. You said don't use a #1 master pin if you can avoid it. You can ALWAYS avoid it by cutting your own keys instead of picking random keys out of a box. ANSI A156.28 specifically says random key bittings must never be used in a master key system. Using random keys is unprofessional, uses excessive master pins (which leads to excessive incidental keys), and it has an unacceptable risk of key interchange. Eight rules for master keying #1 Before you start a new master key system, make sure the customer understands that master keying increases convenience but decreases security. #2 Keep all your master keying records up-to-date. #3 If the customer already has a master key system and they want you to take over the maintenance, you must have the paperwork. #4 You, the locksmith, choose the bitting of the master key. Don't let the customer choose the key. #5 Before you design a master key system, you have to find out what the customer needs. #6 Choose a method which uses as few master pins as possible, while still meeting the customer's needs. #7 Once you have decided how many constants each change key will have, make sure that all the change keys have the same number of constants. #8 Use two-step progression for locks that have ten depths (like Schlage). If you follow these rules, you'll never need a #1 Schlage master pin. Using random keys violates rules 2 and 4 and 6 and 7 and 8. That's a recipe for disaster.
sbunny8 well dang, I just started messing around with Master Keying a couple of padlocks to the locks in my house... I have 3 KiKs that work to 2 different keys but once I put them in locks, the new cut keys work but the old ones dont ~ after numerous attempts messing with each pin chamber, I thought maybe the keys were cut on two different types of machines, or maybe one key is more worn out then the newer one..?
Turrauk, thank you very much! Masterkeying is nothing to be scared of. All it is is simple math, and it will work every time! Thanks for the comment, and thanks again for watching!
Dacari. Thanks for the question. In short. Yes. I mean technically you could re arrange the pins, and cut a key off of that, but to DIY at home, relying all with new pins would be much more time efficient, an practical. Thanks for the sub, and always, thanks for watching!
Correct me if I'm wrong but... with Schlages & some others, I believe you need "2 step" master pins because otherwise the tolerance is too slim. In other words, you shouldn't pick depths (as above with the two "1" differences as in 5 down to 4 and 4 up to 5) You need depth differences that are at least a 'jump' of 2 depths. With other locks, such as Medeco,& Best, you can do one step depth master pins.
+Mike Simms You are absolutely correct Mike. That is my understanding too. Never use anything less than a 0.030" pin unless you want problems. It's probably a good practice to stick to even with the better quality locks like Sargent, Best, Medeco, etc.
Versaron. Thanks for the question. If its a residential lock, generally it will be either a Kwikset (KW1), or a Schlage (SC1) keyblank. These are the 2 most common blanks for residential. If it is commercial, there's really no way to tell without having the lock to look at. It could be almost anything. There's too many different key ways in commercial. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
A Professional .Locksmith would never use a number 1 master pin on a schlage system. You would wind up with the very thin master slipping between the housing and the plug at sometime in the future resulting in a call back.
Thank you for the informative video; you did an excellent job. I worked in a hardware store and basically thought my self to re-key most locks. However, never did learn master system. Your video demonstrates master keying one lock cylinder; how about if I had 20 locks; all schlage; and wanted to master key them all; like owning a hotel or motel. I can give the guest their own key; but have one master to all the rooms? Can you show us that? or explain the math part please and thank you.
Thanks for the question. Generally I would recommend not using a #1 master pin, however I understand this is not always possible. So here's what I do. A schlage master #2 is .30, #3 is .45, etc... So for a schlage master #1, I just use a .15 It will work. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! Even though on the pinning chart is says there is not an option for
+thomas Morgan Probably one of the master pins fell out. Happens a lot, especially if they are thin master pins. I try to keep my mps thicker than 0.030" (that's a #2 mp on a Schlage) when I'm pinning a cylinder for a master key system.
When pulling the cylinder in the future, do you need to remember which key is flush? Otherwise, won't you have some master pins in the springs if you use the wrong key? In other words, the Master key may not be the flush key for pulling the cylinder?
Thanks for the TH-cam it helped a lot. I am not well versed in this kinda stuff. Do the master pins come out like the longer other pins? Where can I buy a set and do I have to have the original key with the numbers or can I use a copy?

great video! I'm interested in becoming a Locksmith I have the tools and a few years of experience however due to the fact that there is not a locksmith within 150 miles of me there is no one for me to work under to get licensed... Is there any other way to get a license if there is no one to work under?
Hello Andrew check to see if your state that you live in even requires license. A huge majority of the States in the USA doesn't require license you just need insurance. If you are in one of those states that does. I would recommend joining ALOA get bonded and insured and go take your test for your license they are not real hard a lot of it is safety codes a big majority of it doesn't even have anything to do with locksmith. Classes are fine but if you got with a locksmith that knows what he is doing you will learn more in one week then you would taking a class for a full semester. Personally I was lucky I am a second generation locksmith and I have been doing this trade all my life. Good luck to you!!
Quick ? If I have a lock I don't have a key for and its a brand door knob I don't recognize how do I know which blank key to use? When I do have a key I just want to match the key size best I can so it can be cut to size? Thanks in advance
Great info! I'm just starting out and found the video easy to understand. I tried master keying a Kwikset lock set but the combination of bottom and master pins protrude past the shear line of the tumbler. I double checked and even discovered that a 4 pin and a 2 pin are not the same length as a 6 pin. 3 & 2 are not the same length as a 5 pin, etc. This is really frustrating and is driving me CRAZY! Am I missing something?! Thanks!
So, thought: Supposing I want to create a master key to an apartment building, but I don't have an existing key I want to use. Can I just come up with a sequence of cut depths and master all of the locks to that, then have a key cut to that bitting?
You are on the right track. That is actually the only way to do it properly and maintain any security over a system as doors get rekeyed in the future. This video is actually about cross keying locks, not master keying. You should always start with the master and then base the change keys off of it, but never use any cuts from the master in the same position on a change key. If your first cut on your master is a 2 then the other keys will only start with 4, 6, or 8, if the second pin is a 1, then the other keys can only have 3,5,7 or 9 in that position of the key, otherwise it is a sub-master and will work other patterns. th-cam.com/video/15X32QgXPR0/w-d-xo.html
Take the lock cylinder out, dump the pins, put the key into the cylinder that you need to find the cut numbers for Place a pin in the top hole, with the key in, until the pin sits flush on top of the cylinder. You can do this for each top hole until you have all 5 pin sizes I have a rekeying video that explains this process better Thanks for watching
There are special followers made to drop master wafers out of the lock without dropping the driver pins, just ask your supplier. If you are master keying a lock, assume that it was master keyed in the past as well and ensure you remove the old wafers.
What if I was to try to decode a lock to find the master key's bidding? If they used these basic rules it would be easy because whatever all the pins in the core add up to is the master, but what if the master was not setup in the way shown in the video but instead setup in a way that both keys use the master pins unsequancly, there would be no easy way to decode it and get the exact master key.
NYC. I cannot. The mul t lock master key system is predetermined via the mul t lock company. They give the bitting. It is very similar to rekeying a mul t lock. Check out my video on that. It can be done, and ige done it before, I just cannot give a demonstration on it. Sorry. If one comes into the shop, I will do my best to make a video on it, but until then... Thanks for the question. Thanks for watching!
if you have a difference of one then a master pin smaller than a #2 will get stuck. He should have said that at the beginning. he's keying with random keys. not a master system. I have 30 years experience. just saying
For a master key to work your lock it has to have master wafers already in the lock. So if you took in a lock to get rekeyed he might have pulled any master wafers out that was already in the lock. Now that doesn't mean it can't be mastered again in the future. If he replaced the lock cylinder with a kwickset smart key style lock those can not be mastered because they are only set up to work with one key at a time. Also a lot of people get confused about Master keys a Master key is not the same as a duplicate key and just because you have more then one lock keyed on the same key doesn't mean they are master keyed. That just means they are keyed alike. A Master key is a key that is setup to work a lock along with another key that has diffrent cuts. Most of the time Master key systems are used for commercial applications example would be a hotel so the maid doesn't have to carry 200 keys for each room. Now there are times when you get a new home that was just built and the builders put locks on that are master keyed so their contractors don't have to worry about getting keys to get in to work on the properties. You should always have your locks changed when you move into a new place for that and many other reasons.
I have a schlage 6 pin lock that is masted to 80 other locks and i cant decode apparently the right pins. I dont have numbers on my keys just a master list of every apartments key code im assuming. can you please help me. I have a master key number on my list but it just says 1 H H H H H , I also have a grand master key code and it gives me all 6 numbers. Im just learning and it has been a nightmare. Thanks.
That is called a hold and vary system. The H means nothing is in chamber the 1 will vary by odd numbers, example 1 3 5 7 9 those are the master pins used since it’s in front 1 H H H H likely master pin in first chamber
Great video, could you help me master a lock to take 3 keys which I already have, the 3 key cuts are: 1. 29370 2. 29377 3. 81632 Thank you in adavance.......John
i am racking my brain tryin to master key my cylinder i did everything right but im using a .015 pin somwhere something went wrong now neither key is opening the cylinder. help please
You'll need to hire a locksmith for that. They have computer systems that will determine key cuts etc. 32 is too many for a DIY unless you're already a locksmith.
thank you for your reply. please i need an example just for 4 or 5 cylinder ,and i can create a computer system for any number of cylinder (i am an ingenieur en informatique and i have magasin of lock) thank you
If using a master pin of one is causing usage to bind, I would have just cut the higher key to the lower one in that position, which also reduces the number of working combinations thus improving security.
you sir are an ignoramus.. in schlage factory pinning there is no such thing as a #1 master pin, there is a minimum size of #2 master pin so there is no jamming of the pin in an ever wearing cylinder.
Unless you're flat out joking, you shouldn't be throwing negative comments on here if you're not smart enough to answer that ridiculous question on your own.
THIS IS NOT MASTER KEYING, it is cross-Keying. Master Keying implies that there is a Master Key and the other keys are based on that master. NEVER use a cut difference of 1 between two keys in one lock, it will fail eventually because of it. Do not call Cross Keying "Master Keying" If you are a locksmith in training, this is false information and BAD ADVICE.
This video is filled with such poor information I believe you should take it down, learn Master keying from a professional or don't and try again or don't.
What kind of stuff are you teaching you should be embarrassed. Schlage’s lowest master pin is #2 so 4 & 1 won’t match that’s the most basic knowledge of locksmithing.
I’m not even two minutes into the video and this guy is an excellent teacher.
They have a lot of grate teachers in the locksmithing community. The only sad part is that my generation doesn’t want anything to do with the trade. I see lock shops closing and selling there businesses left and right all bc the kids don’t want anything to do with it.

Great video! Simple math and you explained it so nicely that even a dummy like me could understand it!
Thank you! I put all my marbles in the automotive field. I'm not facing a simple master key job and you helped me greatly.
Great job 😊
This made it simple to learn the basics of master pinning. Thanks!
My head could not process the theory! Thanks!

Thank you for the refresher, it helps a lot.
Thank you! I'm learning "locksmithery" and the locksmith wasn't able to explain mastering half as well!
Excellent video!!! Thanks for taking the time to make it

Just learning about mastering now. Had a key get stuck in lock and sure enough it was on the pin with the #1 master pin. Always jump 2 depths!
So what inside the chamber? Just springs ? Or drivers pin as well
Which one was the master key??
For those schlages, what top pin should you use if you have a master pin in place?

What is the size for top pins? Thank you.
Will this work on common Kwikset and Schalge locks?
Hello I'm a locksmith in Oregon looking to refresh, how do you master key to three keys?
A Professional .Locksmith would never use a number 1 master pin on a schlage system. You would wind up with the very thin master slipping between the housing and the plug at sometime in the future resulting in a call back.
And it is not a good callback, if you are honest you would not charge a customer for a wafer slip you set up!
Thank you for the informative video; you did an excellent job. I worked in a hardware store and basically thought my self to re-key most locks. However, never did learn master system. Definitely not lol
Youd need to hire a locksmith for that
What do I do if my kit doesn't have #1 masterpins. I know I need a few 1s in different pinholes according to my numbers.
I need to master 150 schlage locks. Each one needs an operating key also. Any videos on this?
Than kyou for the video I just want to see if the master numbers going on top or bottom thank you for your time blessings
Three keys, master , sub master and lock key?
Thanks for the question. Generally I would recommend not using a #1 master pin, however I understand this is not always possible. So here's what I do. A schlage master #2 is .30, #3 is .45, etc... This video is amazing. Thank you so much
Can you post or share some info on how you can master key 16 locks with different keys for each lock AND accessible with 1 master?
I would like to ask you a question. My key has stop working for no reason. And only the master key opens my apt door. Why is that?
No seriously dude stop playin cornball
+thomas Morgan Probably one of the master pins fell out. Happens a lot, especially if they are thin master pins. I try to keep my mps thicker than 0.030" (that's a #2 mp on a Schlage) when I'm pinning a cylinder for a master key system.
can you put up a link to the master pin set and all the pin sets
When pulling the cylinder in the future, do you need to remember which key is flush? Otherwise, won't you have some master pins in the springs if you use the wrong key? In other words, the Master key may not be the flush key for pulling the cylinder?
Can you describe how to solve the 1 pin difference between bottom and master pins. Should I use a bottom key with different bitting?
suppose the pin is a one. what do you do then?
Thanks for the TH-cam it helped a lot. I am not well versed in this kinda stuff.
Do the master pins come out like the longer other pins?
Where can I buy a set and do I have to have the original key with the numbers or can I use a copy?
You can search amazon for a pin kit
Most likely it will be a Kwiset brand or Schlage brand.
Two most common
Awesome video 👍
GOOD INFO LOCKMAN37,WHAT CITY ARE YOU IN,I AM FROM CANADA
Dallas Texas!
I followed the math but can only get the bottom pin key to turn. The top pin key won’t budge. Not sure if I’m missing something?
Hi, I don't have the #1 master wafer of schlage, what do I use? thanks.
I'm a junior locksmith and I just started doing master keying. And boy am I struggling. I think the main reason is because the master key that I was given is so worn down. However on your video in between your 4 and 5 you refer to master pin number one but I have yet to find what increment master pin number 1 is
Thanks for this, clarifies a lot! Any chance you can make a vid just like this but with 2 change keys and 1 mk?
The 2 change keys cannot work each other's locks
tips for tacking apart a master key ? i all ways blow them

If you join ALOA and do not have a sponser you will be put on probation for a few years. not a big thing really but the nice thing about being a member it will be easier for you to buy wholesale parts tools. I normally would not recommend taking a few classes but you might want to do that if you don't have a locksmith near by to learn from. Test fit to see if any keys you do have fit the lock, if so you can maybe identify from there
Lockman, I have 2 schlage pin kits, and neither one of them has a master pin #1? So now what do I do?
Great info! I'm just starting out and found the video easy to understand. Probably have a master pin hiding in the upper chamber where the springs are.
Try that.

Thank you Ed! Thanks for watching!
What if you dont have numbers on your key (i.e. copy keys) ? Can you find them by measuring the teeth somehow?
Take the lock cylinder out, dump the pins, put the key into the cylinder that you need to find the cut numbers for
Place a pin in the top hole, with the key in, until the pin sits flush on top of the cylinder.
You can do this for each top hole until you have all 5 pin sizes
I have a rekeying video that explains this process better
Thanks for watching
How did you get those numbers? those ones do not exist on my keys?
original schlage keys are more common to have the number (bitting ) stamped on them.
Sir, thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching!
What number top pins should i use???

There is no #1 master pin for Schlage
there is no #1 master pin.
your schlage kit starts with a #2 master pin
.030
its just a .015
i have a problem with the master pin keeps getting caught in the top spring chamber. whats the problem?
if you have a difference of one then a master pin smaller than a #2 will get stuck. He should have said that at the beginning. he's keying with random keys. not a master system.
I have 30 years experience. just saying
Said it at the end but you didnt watch that long
Just sayin
Good stuff thank you!!!
I just had a lock re-keyed the locksmith said that he had made the lock so a master key could not be used is that possible?
For a master key to work your lock it has to have master wafers already in the lock. So if you took in a lock to get rekeyed he might have pulled any master wafers out that was already in the lock. Now that doesn't mean it can't be mastered again in the future. If he replaced the lock cylinder with a kwickset smart key style lock those can not be mastered because they are only set up to work with one key at a time. Thanks man!
hai thanks you for this video
please how about if I have 32 cylinder
You'll need to hire a locksmith for that.
They have computer systems that will determine key cuts etc.
32 is too many for a DIY unless you're already a locksmith.
thank you for your reply.
please i need an example just for 4 or 5 cylinder ,and i can create a computer system for any number of cylinder (i am an ingenieur en informatique and i have magasin of lock) thank you
Pam Arifian u can get a online master setup on line
Thank you so much for great info
If using a master pin of one is causing usage to bind, I would have just cut the higher key to the lower one in that position, which also reduces the number of working combinations thus improving security.
True, but a lot of DIY dont have that capability of choosing a specifically cut key, without going to a locksmith.
Thanks
Amway use parody don't mix odd and even numbers it don't work for large key system.
Moter cycle master key chabi
you sir are an ignoramus.. in schlage factory pinning there is no such thing as a #1 master pin, there is a minimum size of #2 master pin so there is no jamming of the pin in an ever wearing cylinder.
Useless information. Assume you don't have the master key. How do you make it?
Make one better then lol
What kind of stuff are you teaching you should be embarrassed. Schlage’s lowest master pin is #2 so 4 & 1 won’t match that’s the most basic knowledge of locksmithing.
