I was the race promoter for the Mount Baldy Hillclimb back in the late 80's - early 1990's It is a beast of a climb.. The original hillclimb started on the Upland side and rode up Euclid to Shinn road to mount baldy. The first climb of one mile warms you up.. Official start was by the fire station located at 24th and Euclid ave - then you climb all the way to the ski lifts sign.. It was 12.6 miles and in all those years only 2 people ever broke one hour - Hillclimb specialist Tom Resh from Redlands has the record at 56 minues - he rode it that year with a 39x21 as his lowest gear. Then a few years after that Ned Overend broken one hour with 59 minutes and many years winning times would be in the 1:03 to 1:07 time range. If you broke 1:30 that was quite the accomplishment. The last 3 miles when you turn up the switchbacks will take everything you have.

Did that ride the better part of ten years ago not knowing what I was in for but I finished. Went back to watch the pro race and realized that the pros are not human. Quite a challenge, glad I did it

RESPECT!! Thanks for dealing with the steep ascent, heat, and flies to show us suffering in real time! Great video!

Mt Baldy is a great ride. We went up the dirt road in the end with our MTB's a couple years ago. Beautiful, amazing scenery but very hot indeed.
Great videos by the way, thanks!

Was that a base layer you were wearing during the ride? Must be a special one for heat.

Good job finishing! That is a super tuff ride even in perfect conditions.

That's why I brought my Crux. 34-36 instead of my road bike which has 34-28. Ugh.

Great video! And congrats on making it. Can't imagine what it is like, but I do remember the high desert in CA. Now in MD, I'll use this as inspiration to ride a century later this year. Thx.

Epic ride! I've gone up to the lifts once, done the loop to the village many times and its always fantastic to finish. During the climbs though, I always have my doubts though. LOL

I could endure the climb and the heat; but the biting bugs would have been a dealbreaker for me. Just couldn't handle a distraction like that.

    • @cyclinginsoutherncalifornia

@@chesterules 1. Heck the PAA website and also occasionally GMR is closed to motorists. Look for those days and go then. There was hardly any traffic anyway, but it’s nice to have ZERO. I’d suggest fall or spring, not summer.

It wasn’t smart to pedal up Mr. Baldy & GMR when it is 106 degrees. What was the reason to take such an immense risk to your health?
