If they can genuinely make each other laugh it breaks down so many other barriers. When you see David and Gillian off screen, one of them or both seem to be always smiling. A true sign of affection and it comes across effortlessly.

I dont think they understand how others perceive them. I do not recall many actors having this closeness. I always wanted to know what other actors thought about their close friendship. As you get older, though, you appreciate that person more. I always wondered why the relationship was complicated. Many actors would kill for a friendship like theirs. Love seems to be platonic. I'll pretend it's not. It's understandable that things end and people move on to different projects. It must be difficult and a relief at the same time. David has the most expressive eyes. They tell every emotion. It would be hard to look into them because they reveal too much. Its a wonderful ability, but they reveal everything.
