    Thank you for the video! We love this game! I like that 2-3 player variant where you showed the NPC player filling in a few spaces.
    I may try the variant with the Event showing up front. It may end up being obvious to go there sometimes but that will also cost someone more gold if they want to go there right away.
    We are also playing with the expansion so I am going to use more of the NPC's workers to fill some of the Crusades and tighten up the options.
    To give the NPC some variability per round, I will roll the die and move each of their Master Builder pawns so they are a little different each round.

    Rahdo, you do amazing work for the gaming community with your runthroughs. You are able to bring a first hand experience of games to a second hand format through your videos. You have also been a major asset to my husband and I as we try to select the right games for us. - That being said, it was clear that your heart wasn't in this runthrough.
    In the first video, you only did the set up for the first round, and you didn't show how the actions interconnect when the round plays out. The value of the story and events become real once you go through the steps and see how the choices you made with your workers and masterbuilders can make or break the success of your craftsmen. Throughout the game, you also had a lot of poorly considered strategy errors that showed an ambivalence toward the game play. On several occasions, I had the impression that you made a choice merely to show the options available in as little time as possible.
    I love you Rhado, I really do. I know you have had little to no interest in this game for years, and I think it is admirable that you made the effort to share your experience via the runthrough. However, in this case, I think you did less than your best to capture the magic of the game.
    I look forward to watching your future video runthroughs to see the excitement, passion and curiosity I have come to expect from your videos. I am still a huge fan of yours.

      i filmed the whole thing in one take, and originally intended to simply post it as one video, but in the past a lot of people have complained that they don't like one long video and would prefer two shorter ones. so i did the extra PITA work (i hate having to edit videos) to meet the preferences of the majority of viewers. believe me, i would have been happy to leave it all as one unbroken vid...
      also, i always make choices to show as much of the game in as little time as possible, and that often leads me to demonstrate strategically less than ideal choices, because the ideal choice would be to simply repeat what had already happened. nothing new here really.

    The random events are in keeping with the novel.

    the expansion makes this game awsome. your complaints get fixed there. plus added replay value.

    This game is widely available in Spanish, printed by Devir, you can get tons of copies in Mexico or Spain for about $25 USDs...

    I don't get to play it often, but this is in my top3 of all time. I had no trouble picking up the base game (though this was a few years back), but even then, the expansion was a major chore to track down. I ended up finding it across the country on Craigslist for sale in a charity event. Anyways, is it the best game out there? No, but even today it has a great combination of two tiers of worker placement, the auction/random turn order, and it's full of flavor for anyone familiar w/ the books.

    Just got this game, mostly on looks and theme and the fact the I generally like worker placements. Also got it at a good prince, now that's it's been reprinted. Thanks for pointing out the 2p variant, which does seem to be successful at tightening up the game (based on your play through). Regarding the event deck, I think it's mainly thematic. If you've read the book, characters always have a hard time pursuing their goals. But if it's an issue gameplay wise, I think you can just house rule the event deck and action space out of the game, right? There seems to be enough going on already, that it wouldn't oversimplify the game. Thanks for the videos!

    Thanks for putting this runthrough together. I'd always heard people talk about PotE in glowing terms, which made me think about trying to find a copy, but now I'm pretty comfortable with spending that money on other games that are also highly regarded but much more readily available. I'm of the same mind as you regarding random events in Euros.

    But you can place a worker there to negate the event, or get some resources if it's a good thing. There is a worker spot by it.

    Game imitates lifes lessons. Enjoy the ride even if its full of bumps. Looks like a good game regardless of any randomness.

  • @thewanderer9371
    @thewanderer9371 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I completely disagree with you on the random events. They are not swingy at all and always target everybody. There is only 1 event out of the 10 that won't benefit everyone, it's the one that doubles all workers salary at the wool mill. All the other events are unconditional.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and i agree to disagree with you :)

    • @thewanderer9371
      @thewanderer9371 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, but when you say "events target certain people" or "50% of the players are gonna get screwed" and "all the good events benefit somebody if you did a certain thing this turn", that's not really true.
      How does events like everyone loses 4 gold, everyone receives 5 gold, everyone loses 2 VPs, everyone receives 1 metal, everyone must remove 1 builder, only use 2 builders on the next turn, only affect only certain people if they did something? That's already 6 out of 10 of the events!

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. of the 10, only 4 i would say are truly equal (-2 vp, +1 metal, +5 gold, next round 2 builders). the other 6 can be hugely swingey, favoring some players/strategies over others due to complete and total randomness, with no chance to prepare or plan effectively.

    Hey Rahdo! I found this game on sale in a local store for 19.99 euros. Do you think i should get it or better a bit more money in order to get some other newer and better game? Thanks!

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i'm assuming that's the reprint that just came out within the last few months, which is why it's so reasonably priced! i guess watch the runthrough and see if you think it looks like fun :)

    • @manos2495
      @manos2495 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its the 2007 Greek Edition. Btw i watched many times both the gameplay and final thoughts videos but i still cant decide if there is a point to buy this games anymore, instead of a newer one, even in this low price...

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah. well i wouldn't get it as a 2p game for sure, as it's not great that way. but it's a solidly designed euro otherwise :)

    • @manos2495
      @manos2495 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It not going to be bought as a 2p game, but instead as one for a 4 member family. On the other hand, while i already own Stone Age and Raiders of the North Sea as worker placement games, i m thinking if i should save that money and add a bit more for e.g. Istanbul or Isle of Skye which are relative cheap and surely newer games :)

      if you've already got worker placement games you love, yeah it makes sense to go for something new and different i think

    The world is pretty unpredictable. Does a game have to be perfectly predictable at all times? Seems a bit...predictable.

      Hi complaints are rather stupid about the events which there are only a handful in the game.

      implying that someone is stupid because they disagree with you isn't a good way to engage in meaningful dialog

    I don't get why you are complaining about the events when the game gives the option to mitigate the effect. So your whinging is pointless. Also it does fit, read the book.

    Complaining about random events is like complaining about real life.

    • @bushibayushi
      @bushibayushi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't want events like that in a worker placement-style game. You don't want an adventure, you want to be able to plan ahead. There's time and place for event cards, I love them. But not in the game like this.

    • @lggevan
      @lggevan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Complaining about random events in a competitive strategy game is totally vaild. I don't know how it works but it sounds like the events effect each player differently? When one player gets and advantage/disadvantage based purely on luck that is not fair or fun. It's a game, not a life simulation.
