      We have the divine within. Living souls are gods. Our purpose here on earth is to evolve in our thinking, lifestyle. The sublime power of our sixth sense is instrumental in our transcendental rebirth. Conquer the ego to resurrect the soul. Holy desire creates. Unholy desire destroys. ***** I apologize if you didn't intend on replying to me but if you if you did read on: We have mostly water within. The only soul is the music and food. Our purpose here is to procreate. My six sense is my music and it's alive and well (might want to check it out). Stay honest to yourself especially when that inner voice is telling you this is total bullshit. I prefer "Holy Diver" great song! At least you got one good thing going for you, good taste in guitarists. ;)

      Tragic mistake when the progeny and progenitor have horribly defective DNA. This is being reprehensibly irresponsible. It empowers the unholy fascist alliance of church and state, spawning corporatism and a pyramid plutocracy. Drastic measures are required: castrate 80% of the male population. -Holy Outlaw-

Here is my reply:---- "Only tragic to the eyes of the unknown by-standing cradle of doom wearing abstract unconscionable steadfast thoughts. The alliance of church and state are essential for the coming darkness transcending total wretchedness." Not fucking bad eh!?? BTW, Male population needs only 81% you're way the fuck off!!!

      Freewill is an illusion as most of our decisions are made before we're even consciously aware of them.. Free will is both a cop out and an illusion....

      If it is an illusion, then why are you saying such comment freely and by your own will?...

      Speech isnt freewill and as already stated our ideas are formed before we're even consciously aware of them..

    • @kjpetrucci
      @kjpetrucci 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alan, how did you reached this conclusion that, "Speech isnt freewill and as already stated our ideas are formed before we're even consciously aware of them..?"
      Actually I am not saying that speech is freewill as you imply to say, but that the simple volition of "speaking" is a product of a volitional act that is free and not deterministic, if you understand what I mean. Also I want to ask you, were you conscious to see if our ideas are formed before we're even consciously aware of them? In order for you to reach this conclusion, guess what? You have to be AWARE and CONSCIOUS that such event is happening. To say the opposite is ludicrous...

    • @alanpfuhl
      @alanpfuhl 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin Quinones
      , how did I reach the conclusion? Simple, the ability to speak does not determine will or choice at it's core and it not free for all as there exists,physical,metaphysical,social and mental constraints for many. And simply read the works of neuroscientist Sam Harris to see where prevailing studies show that decisions in our brains are formed before we are consciously aware of them, it's similar to to saying that when you see someones face your seeing it in the past due to the amount of time it takes the image to reach your eyes and be processed..
      We arent "given" freewill or the ability to make choices due to an omnipotent deity or by ones personal god of choice...

    This is an awesome interview and I have enjoyed George's music for probably half of my life. I recently came to the realization that I am an atheist and it is great when people are outspoken about it and state the importance of not only rationality and logic but also working with different people and being tolerant and accepting. The religious people here that are otherwise fans taking this opportunity to preach should be ashamed. The man is an artist trying to provide for his family and that is all you can ever ask, a man to follow his heart and do good things on his own will, rather than doing it because he is scared of infinite punishment for finite crimes.

      You make a great statement. I, myself, am a Christian. But I can respect others beliefs and have many close friends who don't believe what I believe. We each have our own thoughts and ideas. And we should not hate each for that. I completely agree with you.

      Christianity as a whole is up to the person making a choice to follow god but here's something to think about,a man goes to church and puts on a fasad that he's a good Christian man but when church gets out he cussed out the guy who cut him off driving,what role model was that guy?? I also am an atheist..

    • @Micahdogg
      @Micahdogg 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      speedjunkie66 Its not always a facade or hypocrisy, in fact many times it's just human nature getting the best of us. You could offer some encouragement to the Christian and suggest it's not nice to cuss someone out no matter how mad you are. As an atheist, I don't think you would have anything to lose by offering support.

    i have never heard lynch express his personal views like this. what an eloquent and seemingly educated vantage point! having a "gift" or committing "sin" is not exclusive to any given religion and makes perfect sense in the context in which he is speaking. it is painfully obvious by the comments to what he has said that lynch is wizened to a concept that the majority of religious people have never and will never understand - that tolerance breeds freedom. he doesn't believe the same way that they people (thankfully), so they attack him. it is just so typical.

      That is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen in a youtube comment section. Substitute Bigfoot for Christianity, and see just how fucking dumb you are. Not being convinced there is a God (especially Yahweh), is not different than not being convinced their is no Loch Ness monster. It doesn't take 'faith' to not believe in leprechauns.

      That is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen in a youtube comment section"...1) TH-cam must be new to you then. 2) if you give no reason, explanation, or evidence for this. " Substitute Bigfoot for Christianity, and see just how fucking dumb you are" 1) Why the insults? is it because you do not have a reason of substance to offer ? Comparing bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster for Christianity shows your logic and intelligence level not mine " It doesn't take 'faith' to not believe in leprechauns'--agreed, just common sense...........which surpasses this conversation uh ?

    • @sparky7718
      @sparky7718 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mike edwards I don't need to give you evidence for the non-existence of anything. Proving a negative is never necessary. Hence Bigfoot etc. < - - - I've been on TH-cam for 8 years. The onus is on you to prove a god exists. And don't say "faith" or the human eye.

    • @MJ-tj3nd
      @MJ-tj3nd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sparkymoo Actually Science works in "eliminating" for answers. "I don't need to give you evidence for the non-existence of anything"...then you cant make this statement, it cancels itself out. " The onus is on you to prove a god exists"....Again, science is the disproving of a theory,...to be consistent , you have to prove he doesn't...but you would need to know everything in the universe to dismiss that...which nobody does, so its really impossible by your standards....but, I look at creation and see a creator...I just look at a building to know there is a builder, I just look at a painting to know there is a painter (but then this points to your eye comment, we cant trust our 5 senses right?)...if this doesn't work for you, then we need to set every guilty person free because you wont except evidence, no witness..so we and we cant rely on evidence ? " And don't say "faith" or the human eye." .....blind faith is for fools, i don't have enough faith to believe in evolution or this all just happened by...well, there really are no answers, and i need faith to believe it just did (because science is always correct right ? read your science book, then read a science book 10 years ago. Its always changing) No Human Eye? then you cant have this conversation or viewpoint because if you don't trust your eyes, how do you know what your writing ? could be all an illusion ..............

    • @sparky7718
      @sparky7718 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really appreciate Lynch's candid dialogue and ability to calmly discuss contentious issues. It does stick out to me, though, that he equates being a free thinker directly with atheism. Then he refers to not using one's gifts, specifically logic, as sin. Obviously in the materialistic/atheistic worldview sin is a non sequitur. As a convert from atheism, C.S. Lewis wrote, "Consequently atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning."

    • @Naglfar
      @Naglfar 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      People define atheism in so many different ways, just like agnosticism or theism even. One could say that everyone is born atheist, we are not born believing in gods or the supernatural. As an atheist, to me it just means that I do not believe in supernatural deities without any scientifically verifiable evidence supporting it, it is just the lack of belief in a personal god or anything supernatural. With evidence I'd recognize it's (god's or the supernatural) existence. A more correct definition would probably be agnostic atheist, just as you may have agnostic theists.
      Do people actually need the universe to have purpose? Do people need to feel that someone is taking care of everything, and when they die they'll go to heaven? Are there so many frightened and insecure people in the world that without the promise for a second eternal life and a god watching their every move they'd become violent animals with no purpose and direction? There is plenty of purpose,awe and wonder in the universe (even if the universe itself is purposeless) without the need for a an almighty personal god, it's up to us to make our own purpose and fill our lives with meaning.

      Atheism, Agnosticism, and Free thinking are only three types of secularism. There are around twelve types of secular groups, total, I think. I'm secular, but, more to the anti-theistic views. I am a fan of those who were deemed "The Four Horsemen of Atheism" (Dan Bennett, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and the late Christopher Hitchins). I'm sure George, as intelligent as he is, knows of them, as well. In fact, anyone secure enough in their secular insight does, especially, well voiced and well versed Atheists.

    • @Micahdogg
      @Micahdogg 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrHCSander What is interesting is how faith and science are intertwined. Many atheists simply don't want to waste time pursuing something that isn't proven by science. Yet scientists routinely waste time pursuing theories that often go nowhere. That pursuit is what leads to evidence arguably in both cases. It's not fair to say that fear or insecurity motivated them.

    Michael Anthony Duenas, your comment is absurd, here's why: Mr. Lynch (great talented guitarist, legend etc) is obviously also a rational and thinking man. He uses the terms "gift" and "blessed" etc in much the same way Einstein used common linguistic metaphors in his writings (if not mistaken he used the 'God does not roll dice'... quote among others). His (Einstein) detractors attempted to do the same silly stuff you do here by implying that despite Mr. Lynch's personal affirmation of his beliefs he still owes his talent, creativity and success to a bronze-age myth. Lastly as others have already pointed out your side sir has the burden of proof. There simply is no "real" evidence to support the belief in the super natural.

      Atheism isn't a choice, just like Christianity isn't a choice. You simply believe what makes sense to you at the time. You can't just DECIDE to be an atheist out of the blue, that's not how it works. Being an atheist or if you're like me - an agnostic, requires time and many years of reflection before reaching a conclusion. That doesn't mean you wanted or asked to be in that position, but you can't lie to yourself and tell yourself that you still believe something that you no longer believe in.

    Lynch is a top-notch guitar player, one of my favorites. He is an excellent songwriter (musically speaking). And, the times I met and talked with him, a very genial warm guy that was friendly and easy to talk with.
    “I’m a freethinker, otherwise could be defined as an atheist, but I think that the power of logic and rational thinking is something that we are gifted with, and it is a sin to not use it.”
    Putting aside whatever ones personal beliefs are (atheist, agnostic, Christian, et al) that one rambling sentence alone highlights 10 minutes of yammering that show him to be ridiculously irrational, illogical, and downright incoherent.
    Makes me think that Dokken got in some better shots to his head in their old fist fights than anyone knew...

    He's talking out of both sides of his mouth. He talks about spiritual topics in Shadowtrain, and then calls himself an atheist? Also, this whole notion of atheists being the only intelligent "freethinkers" out there is insulting. He should read the writings of C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Thomas Aquinas, Lee Strobel, Timothy Keller, and countless others who make intelligent, sound and reasoned arguments for the existence of God. Now, all of this aside, even though I vehemently disagree with George, I've always been a fan of his guitar playing and likely always will be. His sense of feel, tone and style are totally unique. Given that, I'm not going to start disliking, badmouthing or boycotting him simply because his beliefs differ from mine.

    • @hadara69
      @hadara69 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree w/your first sentence. That word, "spiritual" is very vague and can mean very different things to different folks. Don't think there aren't spiritual atheists (who aren't buddhists), even Sam Harris, one of the most vocal anti-theists, meditates.
      Religion does not have a monopoly on that concept. It's an experience, just like with the gospel churches he talks about. People get into it, and you can feel that when Doug Pinnick sings (King's X)! Or when Robert Randolph plays. You can't pretend that doesn't matter to music. But you also can't hog it all to yourself as a theist. We ALL feel it. You can call it "the holy spirit" if you like, but seeing as how even SLAYER can inspire it, it belongs to music..not just the blind faithful.
      Pretty obvious to those who've weighed the evidence, especially via mythology, whether any god(s) exist...
      Consider the Euthyphro dilemma, for starters...

    • @CitizenCarrier
      @CitizenCarrier 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And therein lies the problem trying to have a thoughtful, meaningful conversation between someone who does believe in God and someone that doesn't. Every "Atheist" I've ever tried to have a "logical conversation" with about spirituality and faith, they try their hardest to try to talk down to you like you are not a free thinker or that they are somehow intellectually superior to you. In your comment, you could'nt help yourself by saying "blind faithful" like those who do believe are blind to facts or reality.
      For George Lynch to say "convince me" is ridiculous. As a believer, I don't have to convince anyone of anything. That's like saying "I'm smarter than you, so convince me I'm wrong". You also spoke out of both sides of your mouth by talking about how everyone feels spirituality but then try to be condescending by using the term "Blind Faith". I have faith because I see VERY clearly. When you feel the Holy Spirit, it goes way beyond seeing or any of our worldly senses. So faith is NOT blind, but a heightened awareness of truth.
      6672rock was disagreeing in a more respectful way with George Lynch and even said he would still be a big fan of his even if he does disagree with him because of George's obvious influence and talent musically. But you condescend by implying that because we see and feel something powerful that you don't, that we are blind. I too, am a huge fan of Lynch and still will be. But you need to learn mutual respect.

    • @hadara69
      @hadara69 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheAxe4Ever As a former BLIND faithful, I respectfully disagree. Ignorance is a form of blindness as well. Here's an example. Back when Dokken and Stryper were among my fav Metal bands, I was BLIND to the fact that classic country, jazz, electonica, and blues were such fantastic genres aswell, rich in beautiful melodies and heart breaking emotions. No one could argue with me then about Metal's superiority, and I would even take offense to such ideas!
      But now I am much older and wiser. I've become informed about music and am open minded. I understand why you would feel so defensive about your faith, especially when atheists seem to "talk down" to you. But the fact is, you ARE ignorant, just as 6672rock is. I was clarifying the idea of "spirituality" for him. If that doesn't make sense to you, consider this...
      Are christians the ONLY theists that get to experience "true" spirituality? Are you sure about that?

    • @CitizenCarrier
      @CitizenCarrier 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just the type of moronic statement I would expect from an uninformed non-believer. You think you are insulting me by continuing to use the word "blind" but you are not. I've had a discussions with a thousand people just like you, and actually, they put up way more intelligent arguments than you. By continuing to try to denigrate me, you are only showing your true hate and ignorance. As far as your question of "are Christians the only theists that get to experience spirituality?" Did I say that? Again, you are showing your ignorance by jumping to conclusions and trying to put words in my mouth. Of course there are other religions and beliefs that experience spirituality just as much and just as strong as Christians. And that is a good thing. It just must be a very sad existence for people like you who believe in nothing. Because when it comes down to it, that's what you do. You have no faith and no beliefs in anything other than what you can see with your eyes. Just because you can't see it with your worldly eyes, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'll say a prayer for you and hopefully someday, you will truly be educated and experience true spirituality. You are the last person that needs to define spirituality to me or anyone. I have seen it and it cannot be unseen. BTW, I STILL love George Lynch's work. I'll bet you can't say the same about Christian artists just because of your pure hate for believers. Ciao.

    • @hadara69
      @hadara69 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheAxe4Ever What I wrote was in no way an insult, but AGAIN... I can see why you would read it that way. It's extremely difficult to criticize faith without insulting the faithful. The word "blind" is apropos, especially based on your responses. You illustrate your blindness by getting that defensive and calling me a hater. I WAS a believer, I was educated out of it long ago. It's kinda hard to unlearn all you've learned at that point. Like being plugged back into "the matrix".
      I DO believe in something, humanity and our potential for progress, rather than destruction.
      But you're right about one thing, I don't listen to Stryper anymore, though they were my favorite band when I was 19 and a devout christian. The reason is because I don't really listen to hair metal anymore, I've moved on. Dokken IS much better, that's for sure! But still, I heard plenty back then.
      Today, what I DO listen to sometimes is gospel, classic country, & bluegrass that is very religious. Like Alison Krauss & Union Station, for example. There's also some great "spiritual" songs by George Jones, who is my absolute favorite. I don't skip these songs because they're christian. I CAN however, see why you would think that of me, because your blind faithfulness insists non-believers are as you attempted to describe me. YOU were being insulting and defensive, I was being honest. When I say blind, I just mean ignorant. Creationists in the U.S. are the best example of this.
      They are WILLFULLY ignorant. I'm sure you're not THAT blind...at least, I hope not. Use the web to educate yourself. It's there for all of us to progress. Cheers!

      You think you're clever sir? Leave people be, Lynch is a great genuine down to earth person, not everyone believes in fairy tales and has an invisible friend in the sky. As an atheist myself I get along just fine with religious people, and religious friends, as long as they're not in my face about their religion all the time. What if told you, that I think you are delusional believing in God, and that Gilgamesh may bless you for not believing in the right god? You wouldn't be happy about it. So stop telling non-believers that you'll pray for them or telling them that they've been blessed by your god. It would be like if a Hindu was telling you that you will feel Vishnu's wrath if you don't follow the Hindi ways. Doesn't make any sense to the people who don't believe in the same fairy tales that you believe in. Peace.

    I have always been a christian since my early years, but not always following Jesus as I should. But I think we are all on a spiritual journey whether we know it or not. Athiests are ppl that just haven't discovered that Father God believes in them even if they don't. But to say I'm spiritual and an atheist is just strange to me IMHO :(
    I would never expect anything insightful from mr Lynch but now discovering dUg teamed up with him is scary :( But I'm praying for them all.
    "He is either a liar, lunatic or LORD!" CS Lewis and quoted by Bono recently.

    I'm sure Michael Sweet respects George's views equally. Intellect and spirituality do not inherently oppose each other so there's not really a competition between them. If anything, music has both spiritual and intellectual qualities to it.
    I've always wondered why we are mysteriously drawn to music- an arranged variation of tones.
    It's mathematical but it's also emotional.

      I think every normal human acknowledges Christ in one way or another, regardless of how they think on the outside.
      You dont have to be a member of organized religion to admire Christ for who he was.

    There is a guy much like George in the Bible. His name is Thomas. People call him Doubting Thomas, but nobody could ever call him Cowardly Thomas. He was the guy who said, "Let us go and die with him (him being Jesus)." -That was when all of the disciples were trying to talk Jesus out of going to a specific place where they thought they would all be killed. Jesus did chastise Thomas for his unbelief, saying, "Blessed are they who have not seen and yet believe." But in the end Jesus revealed his identity to Thomas. -One thing about Thomas and his logical mind. When Thomas finally saw fully . . . he was able to put the pieces together in a manner that no person before him had fully accomplished. As Thomas felt the wounds of the risen Jesus he proclaimed, "My Lord and my God." I believe George is sincere in his statement about being a free thinker. I pray the Lord will show him some wonderful thing if his mind is truly opened. The gospel is beyond belief, and it indeed takes faith. -But there is a reason something so unlikely to all generations is still alive and well today. The bottom line is, if there were no room for doubt, there would be no need for faith. I think there is a bit of Thomas in all of us.

      God and Jesus ARE man-made religion. The gospels are faith documents, not historical documents. They are embellished stories, about a man named Jesus. Jesus was probably real, as a man. Jesus Christ is what is fabricated. All you have are people's stories.
