Actually, as I recall, the 348/409 combustion chamber in cylinder design was copied from Ford, then abandoned for more conventional and less detonation prone design in big blocks...
250 HP engine could prolly get this car over 120 MPH...

An enjoyable video. My father bought my mother a new 1964 Bel Air station wagon. Aqua, 230/three-on-the-three. It was a reliable vehicle.
Someone at our church had a 1963 Impala wagon with a 409/automatic. A totally different beast.
I am restoring a 1964 Biscayne wagon. Typical desert car. Body is absolutely solid, but the interior, wiring and weatherstripping is brittle and dry rotted from decades in Arizona. Also a three speed manual.

What a fun trip down memory lane! My family had just moved to a small town in the panhandle of Texas in November of '63 (I was five when we moved), and our new neighbors down the street bought a new '64 Chevrolet full-sized wagon. I don't know which model it was. It was a white exterior with a red interior vinyl. As a kid, I couldn't have cared about the mechanics of the car. We went many places with our friends who had three boys our age and my two younger brothers and I. As for the spare tire well, I noticed in the literature pages you showed that the spare tire in the full-sized models was kept vertically in the right fender well over the rear wheel and not in the covered storage area in the back floor. Thank you for a nice video!🙂

@@What.its.like. sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't awesome. I remember exactly on one trip. Me and my older brother were fighting with each other so badly that my dad had to stop at a hardware store somewhere on the trip and have a piece of plywood cut so that he could put us in the back and put the piece of wood between us in an attempt to stop us from fighting and arguing with each other. It kind of worked but not 100%. Sounds crazy when you think about it today but as you know many cars didn't have seat belts or anything like that back then and even if they did have them, there wouldn't have been any in the back cargo area of the station wagon.

Great story thank you so much for sharing that I had a really cool idea of resto mod in an old wagon but it would be total sacrilege.. my favorite wagon so far is 59 cross country wagon what if you took the motor out of that put a Toyota Prius drivetrain in it it got good gas mileage with the six so in theory it should still get good gas mileage and put the battery where the spare tire goes maybe you could put two batteries back there and just think it would be more hybrid than gas because you’d have two battery packs as opposed to one but I don’t think that I could do that unless the wagon needed an engine there’s so many wagons they see for sale that need engines and I was thinking man that would be a really cool thing to do.. because it would get really good gas mileage and you could use it as a family hauler..

I remember the owner shifting it, a nice Italian guy named Marco Iandiorio. Funny the stuff you remember. My uncle had a new 64 Impala 2-door HT, 283/3-speed. I went nuts over that car the first time I saw it and remember several rides, but he only kept it a year then got a 65 with automatic. That was a disappointment.

I am new here and this reminded me of something that happened when I was in high school. In the summer of 1964 my parents took us on a vacation to Colorado. We drove up Pikes Peak and when we got to the top we got out to look around. My brother and I were walking past a line of park ranger Chevy station wagons when I noticed that all of them had 409 emblems. Looking inside we could see that they all had four speeds and factory tachs! All of them were base models painted tan. We were amazed at what we saw. I asked a ranger about it and he told us that they needed the extra power to tow overheated or broken down cars up the mountain to the ranger station. They were ‘62, ‘63 and ‘64 models. There were about 6 of them.

My parents ordered an 9 passenger 64 Impala wagon in Desert Sand with the Saddle Brown vinyl interior (just like the one in the video), factory air (very cold cold air), luggage rack, power tailgate window, 327 4 barrel, Powerglide, and hub caps instead of full wheel covers because my father thought wheel covers were more likely to be stolen. Since we lived in Houston it had no rust for the 12 years we owned it. As for rear leg room it was not that bad and the rear seat was not uncomfortable. I took the Impala to college. It was not considered a cool car during my college years but the 327 had plenty of power and would cruise at 120 mph. Wouldn't mind having that wagon today. The spare tire was on the passenger side of the rear. It had lots of room in the back even if you just put the 3rd seat down and not the 2nd seat. One thing I didn't like was the front speaker was on the passenger side which would blast the passenger but make it harder for the driver to hear. My father and I loved the wagon and it was very stable and powerful. Station wagons today are very popular among collectors and the 64 Impala is a classic wagon.

Our 64 had power steering and power brakes as well. I believe my parents paid $4,400 for it new and had to wait a couple of months for it. We took delivery from the dealer on Dec. 31, 1963 ringing in the New Year with a new station wagon.

My first college roommate had a 1964 Chevrolet Impala 2-door sedan with the 327 V-8 (250-hp version) & Powerglide. It was a very dependable, smooth riding car which was then about 6 years old. We drove all over western PA and Ohio in that car. Yes, it rusted out at the flush-and-dry rocker panels as they use a lot of salt in that area. I was fortunate enough to usually ride in the front, but as you said not much legroom in the back with the seat set for a tall driver. Fun times on the PA Turnpike!

Very cool wagon 😎 this was another beautiful model year for Chevy and apparently successful too! I've never been in a wagon of this model year, but when I was five, at the beginning of the '70s, one of my brothers who was much older and had just gotten out of the service, bought a used, but pristine, '64 Impala convertible. It was metallic blue with black top and very soft black vinyl interior, with the basic popular wheel covers like shown in these ads, I'm not sure about the engine, but I remember riding in the back seat and that thing movin' down the highway! He had it for a couple of years before getting a '71 Camaro, which was cool as well! I have fond memories of riding in a few different Chevys as a young kid, including a '65 super sport, and a '66 super sport, and '68 Impala, and including a lot of '70 models that followed! I probably have such strong memories of the experiences, since somehow I've always been such a car enthusiast from that really young age. 🤔 I may have mentioned before, but it's worth repeating, that your channel is GREAT 👍😎 the content is totally awesome for any car enthusiast!

This 1964 Chevrolet Impala wagon looks like it is still pretty solid ! A couple of noteworthy items is the badges on the front fenders would indicate that it's a 283 C.I. which is a good match up with the 2 speed Power-Glide . On another note the last year for a Corvair wagon was 1962 & 1st came out in 1961 , So they only made the 2 years . The only thing I had close to this wagon , & was my 1st car was a 1965 Chevrolet Bel/Air wagon with a 283 with a automatic overdrive, & a 4 barrel carb. spent many a night in the back of that station wagon ! & of course it had curtains in the back windows ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz 🙃 ! Thanks for the video.

On overdrives, with the advent of the 5 speed manual gearbox and the 4 speed automatic, the extra gears were in fact overdrives, so the optional add on overdrive was replaced by these.

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah that’s my point I’m a huge model A fan if money wasn’t an issue I wanted to buy and daily drive it crazy thing so all models A use same power plant 3.2 flat head 4. Top speed on the trucks was 40/45 if didn’t have stock rear end they were geared really high.. I researched and found that there was a Mitchell overdrive that could be mounted behind the stand transmission and with a stock motor could with Mitchell overdrive and car rear end go 70 mph and get close to 20 mpg.. The key to good gas mileage is gears.. that’s why I always wondered why car companies like Toyota Prius gets almost 60 miles to the gallon and the second generation why couldn’t they put a gear with less teeth when moving down the road for a constant speed engine would be turning at a fraction of what it was turning.. instead of it being on the outside of the transmission it could be on the outside of the rear end and the rear end could have multiple gears inside of it.. I know most everything from a drive now so that probably won’t work but it would be really cool to see if it ever did or could work

A few tidbits..... The first "W" motor (348) was actually released as a truck motor. Due to the horsepower wars between manufacturers in the late 50's, Chevy used this in passenger cars (as an optional motor) in 1958 and above. The self-adjusting drum brakes work by driving the car in reverse, then pressing the brake. An arm would come down and move a gear on a wheel adjuster to spread the brake shoes slightly out to make -up for the wear on the shoes. Nice survivor 64' !

I was honestly thinking about this topic a lot lately and there’s so many things I can say but I can’t say any of it because I’m allowed to have an opinion.. which totally kind of sucks.. what’s crazy is it’s not just the world that changed it’s the culture as well

Totally agree prices car cars now is a con, and too costly to fix when something major when something goes for example Jeep 3.6l v6 according to the car wizard. Chrysler has a head problem with that engine they crack over time and apparently can’t get replacement heads the whole engine would need to be replaced $7,500 that’s crazy it’s all baked into the cake car companies know the average consumer isn’t going to fix that so they are pretty much guaranteed a trade in when that happens
My truck needed an engine $400 is what I got a running 350 v8 for can’t do that in a new car don’t care what make it is

I loved the chevy cars of the early to mid 60s but rear leg room was always the issue. Chrysler had always had more legroom than GM. I loved the 69 through 72 xhevy novas but the Dodge Darts of the same years had much more legroom

Both Chevrolet and Ford had great looking cars for 1964, as did many other makes. It was a good year. Chevrolet with '61, '62, '63 and '64 had great looking wagons, maybe the best of the decade IMO. Of course so did Ford. A great time in the decade. Curious what engine this wagon had in it as I cannot read the numbers above the flags on the fenders. Do you know?

More main bearing means can handle more rpm's, hp and torque without failure.

I am sort of kind of on Instagram but I don’t use it.. it’s almost to the point of too much social media I tried Twitter for 20 minutes and I had enough of that.. I tried read it as well but I couldn’t figure read it out.. Instagram might be a thing in the future I’m just afraid that if I start doing all these social medias I will spread myself to thin I love interacting with my audience.. that’s something that I never want to not be a part of and I’m afraid if I do too many social medias I won’t be able to they will become a time where I won’t be able to answer everyone.. framed a different way if you ask me a question or leave me a comment I wanna be able to answer your question or comment as the person writing the comment I want you to feel like you were going to get an answer from me a lot of channels don’t view their audience that way but I do.. i’m just a regular guy I’m not any different than anybody else I put on my pants one leg at a time just like everyone else.. =)

Wheels and being lowered isn’t terrible can be reversed pretty easily I don’t like when people cut and channel them.. but by far least favorite mod is when they change the steering wheel column it’s really not that hard to drive without power steering I personally prefer to not have power steering it’s just another thing to go wrong

  • @jamesweaver7925

I think if you pretend to show these cars the way they were "like", you should show what they were really like. No aftermarket stuff like the stupid wheels and stuff. And maybe get someone to run the camera. The selfie photography is cheezy. And take it easy with the specs and show more of the car.

Thank you so much for the input.. I wasn’t going to do this car because I try to feature the cars in their stock form.. I like the first person views because, I’m going for if you was looking at the car.. I’m a camera guy honestly more behind the scenes type of guy but honestly it would blow your mind how much stuff one has to know to hold a camera.. settings and what have you.. video quality I’ll admit is t where I want it to be yet.. getting there but we’ve calm a long way things will keep improving I want/need a gimbal but they are expensive and it’s a whole new learning curve I bought a drone a month ago haven’t had time to mess with it yet
