It's important we not return the evil done to us with evil because then evil begets itself in us and wins over us. We should hunger for justice but not thirst for vengeance. Likewise we shouldn't rejoice when others get there just desserts. We should pray for the healing of any hurt in our hearts done by others, but not pray with an evil eye for them to be harmed the same way, ie, an eye for an eye. Ill will towards others is giving them an evil eye with evil in the heart. The heart should be emptied of evil spiritedness. The poor in spirit might hurt because of the harm others do to them, but they don't let that hurt turn to hate. Being poor in spirit, they lack that riling spirit which turns to hate. Can we learn to be hurt without hating in return? Can we be sorrowful without becoming depressed in spirit? Being poor in spirit and depressed in spirit are not the same. The one leads to blessedness, the other to hopelessness. Blessed are those who sorrow for they shall be comforted. That's a promise from Christ who gives us hope. He is trustworthy in whom we can have faith. Faith is the assurance or foundation for hope. Without faith, hope is merely wishful thinking without power to fulfill. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice and righteousness for they will be filled or satisfied. Vengeance isn't satisfying. It feeds the hate already there taking root in the heart. Hurt does not need to lead to hate. Hurt can help purify the heart, uprooting and emptying the heart of ill spiritedness. A poor and emptied heart is prepared to make room to receive and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God. There's no revelation beyond seeing God. He heals and enlightens the eye to the soul.
