    That pacing shot with Leander has to be my favorite clip! From what I’ve seen in many other videos, pacing shots in Britain are almost nonexistent compared to here in the U.S. where many highways are right next to mainlines. I love clips where people waiting to catch a commuter train are just standing on the platform doing their own thing, and then they’re taken by surprise by a steamer going by at 75mph!

    Geoff Hillyard I was a fireman at Crewe sheds 1947/1954,I left after seeing the diesels would take over, I am glad that I have done it. Your films are smashing.

    Based on the description, I'd surmise that the late Albert Seymour was very similar to Ross Rowland over here in the USA. Never met--or even heard of--him until a few seconds ago. I'm sure he and Ohio Central's Jerry Joe Jacobson are swapping stories in Heaven right now along with F. Nelson Blount, Jack Showalter, and many other "Giants of Steam." Also, Richard, OUTSTANDING compilation! Makes me wanna come over to Britain eventually to do some railfan events "across the pond."

    I will admit I've never heard of Albert Seymour before but after reading the description I can tell he was a very good man, my thoughts are with his family. :)

      I am Geoff Hillyard,from Crewe 5A, in 1947. I fired most types at Crewe to London and Glasgow.
      Some were good and some were problems, either the coal or the engines, but rarely let down the engines.in my time I loved every bit of it. In 1950 I was sent into the North Staffordshire Regt, to Trieste, Italy National Service . In November 1952 I was coming home to be demobbed, I saw the wreckage of the train crashed at Harrow and Wealdstone., terrible , and the engine 46242, City of Glasgow was one engine I had worked on before I went to Italy, what a way to think about my trips, and the great engine was smashed.,I later learned that the foot plates men were from Crewe.
      My father Was Harold Hillyard,49 years on the engines at Crewe ,, he fired for the Royal Train 1937, He was handed a treasury note for ten shillings for his firing to Carlisle.
      I fired in the 1950s with Jack Mills,he was beaten up in the Great Train robbery.
      I will not want to bore you, I just say that I left the steam engines in 1954,when Diesels were going to take over, but I really likes my firing trips up Shap .

    Okay! Now, THAT is how you pace a British steam excursion!

    I have fired on so many engines at Crewe sheds in the 1950s, but the three cylinders, and the four cylinders were terrible to oil the rods under the boilers, that are rarely seen for those not firemen.
    6201 was the worse engine to oil the corks. It was always so dark, and the risk of someone moving the engine whilst the fireman was squeezing in the rods, hard to explain to most people . Imagine how much coal has bee fired up the chimney from Crewe to Glasgow and Perth., only one fireman, it is never asked about toilets on the foot plates.
    I have enjoyed my trips on steam engines 1947/54.

    Wow, great video. The pacing shots are great, I've never seen that done from another train except when it's staged with two trains on a photographer's trip. At 24:13, was a cylinder leaking or a seal failed or something?

    Okay, yes, I'll admit to becoming part of the "Armchair Brigade," but I personally think this needs to be said--especially with regards to the Bulleid Pacifics. THERE'S TOO MUCH BR BLACK!

    • @harnettyrailways
      @harnettyrailways  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      35018 British India Line only appeared in BR black for the 1st few months during the loco's running time after a long term restoration from Barry Scrapyard condition. But eventually 35018 was repainted into BR express passenger green livery Max.

    Olton Hall is the Hogwarts express.

    • @harnettyrailways
      @harnettyrailways  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but 5972 is really Olton Hall as she only carries the Hogwarts Express nameplates for filmings of Warner Brother's Harry Potter series.
