i guess this game was created for very intelligent people who can solve puzzles for 50-100 hours. I can not imagine how great and work is put here. It is without any doubt masterpiece.

This has got to be one of the greatest reviews you guys have EVER done. Also, for a puzzle game, it's great that got someone that could truly appreciate the difficulty and the subtle beauty of the game. If it was one of your more "simple minded" reviewers, they'd probably get frustrated and not appreciate it as much. Puzzle games aren't exactly my thing, but this great review makes me want to give it a try! Bravo!

Funny how The Order 1886 was an action adventure game that took 7-10 hours to beat but The Witness is a puzzle game that takes up to 70 hours to beat.
This game would be awesome in VR.
The main con that I'd be able to imagine is that this might become pretty repetitive. This might be completely wrong, of course and will probably vary from person to person.
+Oscar Eriksson Nah fellow swedish brethren, I can't imagine that the game wouldn't feel repetitive being 50 hours long with this simple puzzle mechanic. It might have a lot of depth, but hell, drawing lines on boards can only be fun for so many hours. I can't imagine for 50 hours. I would have bought the game if it was 5-10 hours along. That's the amout of time the gameplay looks to support from what I can see.

I'm not the biggest fan of puzzle games, but it is an understatement to call this game a masterpiece.
Genuinely curious: How does 100 hours of maze puzzles not get boring? I want to get this game for PS4 but worry I will get bored. But it is getting great reviews so what makes it so great?

The thing about the witness is that it is a work of art. Jonathan blow is an artist to say the least and he put his absolute heart and soul into this game. He made the game the way he wanted to make it with out being swayed in any way by other people's opinions. He was able to completely shut off the world and create something that is, in my opinion, incredible. With the help of so many game designers and studios out there it is very often forgotten that video games is a form of art. One of which that is hardly ever acknowledged as a piece of art given the "artists" (game designers) obsession with their games being fun and playable and sellable. The vast majority of games out there were created and are being created for the soul purpose making money. OR games are being created by people who truly love creating games BUT money is and has and will ALWAYS play a role, however small that role is, in the creation of a game. Making it easier, more "fun" for the general gaming audience thus being able to sell more copies and in turn making the creator(s) of the game more money. Jonathan blow is an honest man making honest games with out the help of money constantly tapping him on the shoulder. He created a game more innocent and beautiful than any other game out there that I have ever seen. Being able to focus your entire mind and soul on creating something without distraction from ANYTHING is a true skill that this world has completely forgotten. There are very VERY few people out there that are able to maintain perfect artistic flow over the course of such a long time. Jonathan blow made a game that he, as an artist, wanted to make and it breaks my heart to see the pure, profound, innocent, and absolute genius artistic qualities that this game masterfully represents fly over so many people's heads.

Believe it. The reason you hear other people dislike this game is because it's a puzzle game. And not everyone can enjoy a puzzle game no matter how perfect it is.
PivotShorts I'm probably about 80% through the game and I would say that I've found only one con. No story as far as I can tell. Braid at least had a loose narrative that was fun to guess about, but this seems to have nothing. Still though I would highly recommend this game. It's awesome.
Michael Shi cons are there is zero story, no explanation to why you're doing the puzzles, no narrative, you can't jump or climb, no logic to the puzzles, annoying flat graphics. It looks like they created the game within a week

puzzle games do not need a story, nor explanation, nor logic, nor graphics to be good. Examples: Sudoku, Tetris. So I stand by what I said.
For those getting upset about the 10/10, you need to ask yourself, what would you do to make the game better? A game, no matter the genre, deserves a 10/10 if there is nothing you can add to it to make it better.
Get a sketch app, it will come handy. Save clues, if you need a walkthrough try to use spoiler free. This game is so satisfying when you solve it by yourself.

40-50 hours? There is no way that this would not get boring for such a long time span. The game looks great but I can't imagine that the gameplay can justify such a long game without feeling like a chore.

It's quite unlikely, 4GB is usually reccomended and that should get you running most games on medium-high settings. Some racing games which are generally less demanding will still ok with 2GB RAM though, but you'll want to upgrade soon, either the RAM or the computer itself.
You could try it. It isnt very demanding on low graphs

Yep. There are very few games in existence that deserve a 10/10 score (and this isn't one of them). Handing it out like candy makes it meaningless.
It's essentially an open world version of Portal with a little bit of The Crystal Maze thrown in for measure. No physics. All stationary logic based puzzles where each unique environment provides a new unique puzzle system. It's a game that allows the player to explore their own strengths of perception, and then strengthen certain weaknesses over time. Yes, I do believe this game will make some people more perceptive/intelligent in its own way.
The visuals are lovely.

Had not even heard the name of this game before. It pooped into my subscription box so i checked and what i see is 10/10 masterpiece. That's just amazing!
She forgot to mention how the gameplay doesn't integrate into the word at all. The world is beautiful but not mysterious because you already know what you are going to get, more line puzzles. That is not a mystery. A truly great game is one where the gameplay, design, and the narrative combine in a natural way to present an overall cohesive experience. And this game does not do that, at all. In fact, it literally takes you out of the world only to put you in a line puzzle. Like why even have the world? And lastly it is not fun. All good games should at least provide some sort of emotional fulfillment and this game provides none because there is no driving narrative that gives everything context. There is no narrative and very little context given. It's a classic case of style over substance and at best deserves an 7/10.
To anyone reading this I hope you understand that this is not a rant. This is an informed critique of the game, explaining why it doesn't deserve a 10/10
If you never got to the part where you're collecting audio logs that help make sense of why you're there & who you are, you aren't going to see the brilliance of this game.

The reason why I don't like puzzle games is because I'm already doing calculus, physics, and chemistry every day and I don't need more of that in my life
This game is amazing! God the puzzles at times blow my mind and help me understand and even teach me almost poetic ideas the compliment the visual design of the game itself.

I'm HOOKED to this game, and can't remember having to rack my brain so much in a videogame for a good while! Does anyone else find that looking around is a bit jarring though? I've played a lot of first person games, but for some reason this has a pretty dizzying effect..!

Ohhhh yes, that's a film character, "Guido", from *8½* (that's really the title). He's played by Marcello Mastroiani, and it's a great... _great_ film. A little tough to get the jokes, but it can really invite you to get into film. Once you do, it's one of the most fun experiences you'll ever have!
Basically it's impossible to complete without looking up a guide.

"Made me see puzzles everywhere I looked", yeah, tell me about it...I played this for about an hour a few days ago, and afterwards, I started getting this weird feeling that there were lines everywhere that things should follow. Even typing instant messages got pretty strange, because every time I messed up and had to delete some stuff (i.e. go backwards in the text, in a way), it made me pause for a couple seconds, like I wasn't supposed to do that. It was actually really annoying D:

i agree with the perfect 10 out 10 score, its original, colorful, massive and just labels itself as a fun game that isn't about killing, shooting, zombies, all the things we see over and over again.
This review is pretty deceptive. Not saying the game is bad, but the review overlooks some glaring problems with the game. The game has no respect for your time and it is often an unfair game. Having played the game and beat it, I wish they would've pointed out those undeniable truths.

The Witness is the perfect example that demonstrates the whole "try it before you have an opinion about it" idea. When Johnathan Blow first demoed this game on Sony's stage almost three years ago, I thought to myself, "how can drawing a line from one end to another be interesting?" And watching all these reviews still gives me the feeling. But listening to the people reviewing the game makes me want to just shut up and try it. I haven't seen a review below a 9 so far. Well done John.
This is at best a $15 game. Literally no replay value and despite what the video suggests it really doesn't give you any incentive to move forward. This is a phone/tablet puzzle game that pry would have been better actually being on that medium. You're not going to be sitting down in your home to play this game for more than a hour or so at a time. This would have worked better as installments on mobile devices or as a hand held game. Save your money.
I find it hard to be interested in something when the reviewer praising it uses so many words, but ultimately says so little.

I have just watched Jonathon Blow's presentation in 2011 about indie gaming and how he used prototyping and even he can't make a game these leads another game which was Braid in that case. He also talked about his new prototypes. he was making art and music games to express yourself for a game play but didn't worked out but he wanted to use these ideas in further projects I like his idea and try to find out. I was wondering if he did anything about it and I find out these. I don't know why but when I saw 10 points I was kind of proud :)

It's a more complex puzzle game than you think. I've seen a 30 minutes of gameplay and I already know what I'm waiting for.

I have the platinum trophy in this (too easy to get. should have tied to the rest of the puzzles). I would guess I did it in 35-40hrs with no guide. I haven't found all the puzzles but have unlocked some of the most mind boggling secrets. I feel even after all this time, there's still undiscovered wonders hidden in the island.
once you've gone thru the game once, you might be able to do it fully in 14hrs. but youre not going to do that right out the gate. there's learning and exploring involved. truthfully the 50 or 60 hours is an undershot. completionists might spend hundreds of hours.
