It was so much fun to watch Maura paint Brian (enjoyed their “discussion” as well) and to watch Mauro learn to paint Chamberlain style. I learned a lot watching her. Great video and beautiful paintings as always!
Maura can really draw, she captured Brian very quickly. As ever, thanks for having meaningful art conversations with your friends. It’s also nice to see pleasant weather for painting outside. Last night we had the first dusting of snow on my local mountains, after weeks of wet weather. It’s been a day of fascinating light, especially with the low clouds coming through. Like looking at a huge black & white negative. It was too cold for much more than a few fast pastel sketches between sessions of walking to get to new views and thaw out. As ever, I really enjoy the different paintings you guys produce of the same location. The range of styles and the conversations provide great insights. 🎉
30 minute painting Mike era. Very excited for this series to keep going. That unleashes interesting potential in content and draws the best out of you guys!
I always learn a lot watching your videos. That's especially the case with this one, where you walked Maura through the process of creating "confident messy energy". Her quick portrait of Brian showed us she's a wonderful artist in her own right, and here we saw she's also a quick study when adopting new techniques.
I loved the "lesson" you gave to Maura. It was really inspiring. More of that please. Wonderful to see someone who painted small and tight to be asked to open and expand. Loved it.
That was so fun watching Maura learning your style! What I took away, among other tips, load your brush!!!! I’m guilty as well of not doing it enough.. Great paintings by all and good job to Brian after not doing pleinair in many months
Great job Maura!! Maura is so talented and I love seeing the real-time level-up to big and loose with Michael. I can tell that she is so nervous but excited at the same time. I am working on a commission that is 18x24 which is the biggest plein air I have ever done so I am now getting the anderson style easel like Michael has for larger canvases and I'm so excited to start doing larger plein air pieces. Would so love to paint with you all.
I've learned a lot on paint applications, choices of color and ways of freely moving your brush. Brian, Maura and Michael, the three of you have done amazing work to where inspired artists stopped by to paint along. I love you guy's energy ❤️ Thanks Michael🎨
Mauras portrait in that time is fantastic, she should not in any way be hard on herself. In that time Sergant would have got an eyebrow in.. Very nice tuition going on there. Love how Maura starts to realise about quantity of paint makes a difference in her strokes so quickly and wants to load up then gets nervous lol. great Vid Michael one of your best so far..
What a great episode! I’m a pastelist and while there are some obvious differences they are very similar in process. How many times have I heard, “I want to loosen up!”. It’s hard. I loved so many of the suggestions you gave Maura. I need to embrace being more out of control. I also need to practice putting cools next to warms to better show light. You’re a great teacher.
What a super fun painting session! It's a great exercise to paint something in 30 minutes or less. Enjoyed the way Brian opened up after being away from Plein air for a time. Maura found a new route to her painting expression. Using a large brush and plenty of paint, huge luscious globs of paint and kind of rolling it randomly is so effective. I think it transmits the energy of the ocean. Good advice to limit the white as it sometimes gives a chalky look. Yes please. More of these!
Such a FUN VIDEO! And Bravo to Maura for her bravery to be vulnerable. The more I paint, the more I understand that it is all about being vulnerable. That's the way to learn and grow. Watching that bravery in others helps so much by "giving permission" to try new things.
That was fascinating. There’s a lot to be learned by not just teaching, but trying someone else’s style and techniques while hearing their thought process. What a fun day out painting with friends.
This session is great! the interaction between the three of you is fantastic. 'Do not lighten with white!' lesson learnt. Also 'messy energy' is another to take note of - not sure that i can use that for my more messy efforts. I think it would be useful to carry on this theme of painting with two or three artists as the interplay really works. Well done all three of you.
An exciting day, a video about three painters await us chamberlainpaintings, Maura and Brian back from hiatus Brian made the most of the view, materials raw Had a Chilean guest painter, think she’s a southpaw Maura made a gift to Brian, a portrait of him Captured his essence, though he asked for a double chin Michael forced Maura out of her comfort zone Using more paint than she’d do on her own Interesting lessons and observations Pa-treon exceeds all expectations 😁 Maura’s paintings amaze me at how she conveys a sense of depth and light. Brian’s is very beautiful. Both of yours capture so much of the energy of the location. So beautiful and amazing. My most overused word. That looked like a dangerous location to get to. Which is probably the most elderly thought I’ve had today. Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛
Loved the video. It was so informative watching Maura learning your techniques and I certainly learned a lot as well. Adding cad yellow instead of white to lighten was definitely something I’ll be experimenting with and also the holding of the brush right at the end to keep brushstrokes random. Great tips 😊
@@chamberlainpaintings Michael seeing you and friends sharing the day was the most beautiful thing of all , I truly appreciate and enjoyed every frame of the video, it was so cool 😎
This was fantastic! It was so much fun watching Maura try to paint in your style, Michael! I was smiling the whole way through! The pressure! I can totally relate to Maura and the fear of taking on so much paint! To be fair she does normally paint quite small and uses small brushes, but this was an excellent experience to loosen up! You have already started a new wave of impressionists that are admirers of your work and your personality. I really enjoyed this video and am encouraged to put more paint on my brush! LOL
Very helpful when you were helping Maura paint. Loading the brush, with energy, quick and random strokes. Helpful to see her resisting, wanting to blend.
I've recently come across your videos and really enjoy your style. This video was very helpful for me because of your explanation about using enough paint and also adding yellow instead of white. It's really nice to see that you're from the bay area and painting areas that I recognize!
Very cool to hear you dissect what Maura was doing and coach her...helped understand better what your thought pattern is. Also, the lightening up with cad yellow and why, instead of white titanium was something I'll try. Thanks!
- 25:06 - north view experiment 15 minutes - success , the “ land mass “ and you having said your continuing interest in this composition and how to approach it, I think it’s beautiful ❤
Awesome! I know Maura is a good painter, but love the way how you change Maura paint, and not use white to lighten up the values. Thank you for sharing your painting experience and techniques! 😃
These videos are awesome. Giving me inspiration to get back out and paint. I live in Santa Cruz area. Maybe bump into one of these days. In the water or land fellow surfer
Loved this!!! I was just envious I wasn't there with you all 🤣🤣 The coast of Virginia is not as wonderfully dynamic as California. This is the type of paint out I need, going along with someone that can really help steer me in the right direction when I start getting left brain detailed. LOL!! I will have to try the timer idea and just tell myself to think "studies" not necessarily finished work. If I can loosen up then I truly can have more finished works in the field that are spontaneous and fluid rather than clinched in details. Love, love this video!!!
Beautiful work for all of you. I have an idea for Maura next time. Squeeze out a good portion of paint for her, then have her use it all up on one painting.
You're an amazing coach Michael! This was super interesting with the timed paintings. Bravo! Maura I love your painting - it's loose and vibrant and I too struggle with reserving my white until the end. It makes a difference.
Suggestion for your plein-air painting sessions and your easel: Consider using a 1 x 2 board that is about the width of your panel minus one inch on both sides, then attach some 1 inch velcro to the piece of wood and the other side to the back of your panel. Then, get an eyelet-hook at Home Depot that goes into the wood, no longer than the depth of the wood. Attach your bungee cord to the eyelet-hook! This will get the bungee cord off of the front of your board, plus it will give the panel some added stiffness. You probably have everything you need right now to try it out! :)
This was very interesting ... Waves although not easy definitely lend themselves better to loading the brush and moving quickly on the canvas to create the spontaneity and abstraction that waves have ... This was a great demonstration on loosening up to create movement , color mixing and reflected light also nice to see Maura a great painter willing to try ways to move the brush differently than her approach and see new insights
One of my favorite Utrecht colors to lighten is Naples Yellow light, instead of white. I only use white + UMB in the sky. Just a suggestion, great videos.
It was so much fun to watch Maura paint Brian (enjoyed their “discussion” as well) and to watch Mauro learn to paint Chamberlain style. I learned a lot watching her. Great video and beautiful paintings as always!

Great video. 👍

Yes, she can! Fortunately we've had really nice weather lately. Rain is on the way though. Glad you're getting out there despite the cold and rain!
I like your comment that the brush is starving. A good mantra for loading the brush

"Messy energy" - I love that! Letting go of tight control is so difficult for many of us who paint.
Incredibly fun and informative romp on the beach. I swear my nostrils flared watching all that luscious paint go down! Thanks so much!
