  • 75 m below the finish line was expensive. But coming back to Montlucon-Gueret airfield was definitely better than an outlanding!

    As a pre solo pilot, watching this was so out of my comfort zone.... OMG, gliders coming in from all directions.... FLARM must have been melting 😁😁.... Well done for getting home.... needs a lot of patience ....

    • @hamstermomoco
      @hamstermomoco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not that dramatic, and FLARM doesn't give much warning when all the planes are circling in one direction, warning is only issued when Flarm anticipates a possible collision.

      @@hamstermomoco maybe the difference in perspective between limited experience and 00's of hours.... For me the gliders coming in from off centre at 3.58, 4.51, 5.16, and 5.30, show how quickly these things happen if you are looking the wrong way, or distracted in the cockpit.... perhaps the camera lens makes them appear closer than they are though.... as stated I have limited flying experience so it maybe just looks a bit chaotic 👌👌

    Hi Stefan. Congratulations on another super video. I also use XCSoar, but only in Condor. Yesterday I spent a decent amount of time adjusting the response of the variometer and its altitude signals. I liked the display of the assistant in the thermal on the digital panel, I must repeat it. Perhaps someone will need my settings: volume 30 % Min Frequency 250 Hz Zero frequency 350 Hz Max frequency 550 Hz min rate of climb -0.0 m/s max rate of climb +0.0 m/s

  • @TheSoaringChannel

    Nicely done Stefan! Shame about the finish! Sometimes the adage from automotive racing seems to apply: "That's racing!" Anytime a car gets banged up, or run out of fuel on the last lap, that seems to be the resounding statement that's made. I'm sure you could've achieved the other 75m with your skill, but like you said, better to arrive at the desired location and try again the next day, and have extra energy from not needing to setup all over again.

    • @TheSoaringChannel
      @TheSoaringChannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My insurance cannot prohibit competition flying here in the US because it's experimental certification is "racing and exhibition" category. It has nothing to do with the danger of competition flying to be honest. Most contests have strict rules for thermaling which Stefan eluded to during his video, and why he wasn't able to optimize his climb. In addition every contest requires FLARM. So I've got Powerflarm Fusion at the recommendation of Stefan and it's incredible. That alone is a massive gain in awareness of traffic around you.

    can someone please explain the rule about finish altitude - thank you

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have a finish cylinder with 5 km radius around the airfield. At the beginning of the competition the minimum finish altitude was 750 m MSL, which is about 330 m above the airfield. If you are below this minimum altititude, you will get one panelty point per meter. The maximum panelty points can only be as high as the speed points, so it´s the same as an outlanding just befor the finish cylinder.

    I love your videos. However this one illustrates just how crazy competition pilots are when they are bunched up in a thermal. The glider very close and barely 20 metres below you puts you both in extreme danger, and he probably could not see you. It is simply not worth the risk of doing this kind of close flying. It only needs a quick updraft or sudden shift of position to have a catastrophic collision. Surely there were other thermals to find. Please stay safe and be sensible.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The risk of a collision in a competition is higher than the normal flying at your club. That´s true. However we try to fly as safe as possible with these conditions. In huge gaggles you can´t have a separation of 100 m or so. Always looking for a different thermal is not an option when you want to fly a competition. Most of the pilots fly safe and the relative speed between the gliders are low.
