So for the month of Oct he made close to $10,000 a day, now though he's off his subathon and they dropped below where he was before the subathon
it's funny to me, if these guys knew they were getting this much money in ad money, why not just stream 24/7? That's the reason shroud, lirik were running 24/7 platforms because they could run ads and make non-stop money. But with less than 5% getting ad money now, is there even a reason to have those second channels? anyway, yeah apparently youtube was paying truckloads before that 2017 thing.

"The ads don't work". They're also not appropriate for Twitch's audience. My viewers often say that ads that show on my channel are for nicotine gum and dog food. My viewers on Twitch are mostly 15-30 year olds who aren't smokers and don't have dogs. They're like "what does this have to do with gaming or even me in general?" The choice of ads just shows how out of touch Twitch and their advertisers are.
I got a mid-stream, sidebar ad for "Oprah's thoughts about climate change." I was like WTF. What audience do they think Oprah can peel away from 5v5 MOBA tournament action?
It's really odd to me that after Twitch lost a lot of its highest performing and risky streamers to other platforms they are now having an advertiser problem.
The Hasan happy birthday clip is wild stuff. TH-cam will send you your diamond play button one day and then ban your ash the next if you step out of line. They literally make the big company look better.
It's very interesting seeing how new streamers still see twitch as the place to stream regardless of the limited reach and lack of algorithm support compared to youtube. I genuinely think twitch is only surviving off of their first mover advantage they got being seen as a gaming livestream site years ago. Bc in reality now it's just inferior to youtube livestreaming and the only thing keeping it alive is the idea of people still buying into the faulty system.

To be fair, if they have a bunch of monthly payments and commitments they can't get out off, that hit to their income would be hard. You could say they were living beyond their means, but if they got 10k per day consistently for the last year, they would have thought they were living within their means.
Wasn’t that guy just meming tho? People didn’t post that guy’s whole clip because it doesn’t match the narrative they’re trying to push, and doesn’t make good drama, if it turns out he was just trolling…
This really only applies to like the top 100 streamers on the platform. There are thousands more smaller streamers who are getting hit just as hard, but are going from a living wage to a non living wage and wont be able to stream anymore. Like going from $100 a day to $20 a day.
Twitch has been trying to cut corners forever at this point. Small temporary fixes without really addressing the situation. As a gamer, I miss the old days.
8:55 omg that would be epic if I could click a checkbox to hide all political / social type of content while browsing social media. It's so annoying having that type of content constantly inundate 99% of our lives.
The people reporting that they lost revenue has admitted it is because they have tags such as election under their streams. That lacey clip was a bait too.. if you kept watching he laughed about how much he could farm the clip.
I found that an interesting video. Thanks! 11:18 club. You really don’t like twitch though, my god. I don’t know how many years I’ve been watching but I feel like you wake up in the middle of the night and stick pins in your Twitch site voodoo doll! lol
11:18 gang represet! Also it's wild it took until 2024 for twitch to have this problem. I'm unsure if amazon will let this continue or just put twitch on life support going forward. Developing the classification system is an order of magnitude harder on twitch than it is on youtube due to the ephemeral nature of it. It's why the report button doesn't auto ban streamers if they receive 10k reports in a stream.
Not really Twitch can make the same classification system YT has. It just has to classify the vods, the problem for Twitch is that making such a system is really expensive and Twitch has no money because they wasted it on retaining talent that is now destroying their website. The fact that Twicht went through that whole gordo react meta and somehow still haven't made classifiers is crazy to me.
The TH-cam adpocalypse comparison is a true one, the only quibble I’d make is that there is a big difference between that and twitch. Twitch doesn’t seem to want to solve their problem when TH-cam did solve theirs.
@@TommyDavidVerbal - That's literally every platform, every business. And fixing this is not only in the creators best interest, but their own. Strange comment, lmao

I'll never forget last year when the twitch CEO was dead serious about this idea called "twitch after dark". He announced it last year during twitchcon here in vegas. Which in translation meant they wanted more x rated content on the site. Then comes to find out the CEO has a full blown cam girl addiction and championing streamers like LTG who is a known racist and even invented his own slur. I reported about the twitch after dark thing and had so many people esp women in the industry call me a liar, but they were dead silent about the ceo's cam girl addiction. The problem is im a part of the fighting game community and they all mostly stream on twitch i myself should be streaming there but ill be honest after the election people are just wylin out. seems like everyday you wake up, someone else crashes out, or goes on a racist rant. I can easily stream on youtube but I tend to play copyrighted music. so im really wondering whats my next move. but personally amazon needs to either sell twitch or clean house, that Ceo is a virus.
Thanks for always explaining these big topics in a way that is more digestible than most. I always look for your videos when these things happen. Shout out 11:18!
I run a TH-cam ad agency - we had the ability to target specific ads and to not run ads on certain types of content (like gaming). The other ad agencies were just lazy and never clicked the button to turn those placements off. That, or the companies they were running ads for panicked and told them to turn everything off (which is more likely)
This is what happens when you have your "golden boy" streamer get away with ANYTHING, who is somehow loved by all of Twitch and has their own little streaming frat of people who never call any of them out... let it fall... bring back gaming... please
It definitely hurts their new talent opportunities. No fresh blood, no fresh content. People see there is an extremely unfair ecosystem of untouchables. Whereas the poors can be banned for wrongthink.
I don't get why people bring up the Lacy guy so much. He literally did a subathon for the entire month of September and had crazy hours watched for that month. It's not surprising that his ad revenue would drop 80% month to month. Not that the ad situation on Twitch isn't problematic, but the number of places citing the 80%-95% number as anything close to the general trend just feels sensationalistic/bad faith to me.
Love the way you explained this, there are a lot of factors at play with the twitch adpocolypse and you cover them all really well. no ad targeting and not banning extremism is the biggest reason I think this happened. The moderation team in my opinion needs to be completely replaced, maybe even managed by a third party company that advertisers directly work with. The slack leaks that came out during the asmongold ban i think really served as the main catalyst. If those leaks didn't happen, no one would have went after advertisers. People don't like when rules are enforced arbitrarily, and even less so when they are politically motivated. If Hasan got banned at all for his rhetoric. Either from using zionist pejoratively, showing houthi propaganda on stream, or platforming a terrorist, none of this would have happened. Now they have cracked down on the first one a little, but no one was actually punished for it. It's completely for show. It's clear that they will never punish hasan because A. he makes them money. B. moderation team agrees with his politics. Its going to be like a bathtub meta all over again with these extremist behaviors. They'll follow the rules to the letter, while still defending extremist views. In my opinion user generated content websites need to restructure their agreements with advertisers. Advertisers should be able to opt in to place ads on certain kinds of content, and websites should be seeking out advertisers that aren't as squirrely. There are some companies that don't really cow tow to that kind of pressure because they understand that the internet moves on quickly and there's still value in it regardless- if you can reach your target demographic.
I’m sure this will get buried. Didn’t Hassan stop running ads on his streams weeks ago when his contract was up? I could swear he’s just been doing memberships for a few weeks now, so it’s confusing why he’d be targeted at this moment.
If SME and UMG knew, that every streamer on twitch just forgot (again) that DMCA exist, Twitch is gone in no time. Ads + DMCA would be an overkill at this point

A query I would have is; To my understanding (which may definitely be wrong haha) the purchase of Twitch was for the Live Streaming technology. Which is now a service sold by Amazon. The other potential use is the Twitch Prime as a method of acquiring more subscriptions for Amazon although if speaking about it being cut, imagine that hasn't been effective. Is there any other incentive Amazon has in regards to keeping or a use they have of Twitch given that it is, atm, a non-profitable company?

21:40 "less ads" - no, I think there will be even more ads. You will just see the same ones over and over again. Twitch will be like watching regular TV and having 5 ads every 8 minutes. So, they need to run more ads to even make money. Let's be real - there's enough streamers who absolutely don't care that the stream is interrupted by ads. They will run the density so high and people will still watch. They do need a new CEO and new managers. We have people from a "protected group" spreading terrorist videos, narratives, etc. but say 1 thing about Islam as a white person and you'll be banned within hours. It's like seeing January 6th as an "insurrection" but support BLM riots and CHAZ. More people died during the BLM riots than during J6, but one is seen as a threat and the other as a "social movement". Like for real - if you're not white, straight, male, or a combination of these, you can do anything you want.
I remember when rumor that through ad targeting, mature brands could opt in to appear on mature content. Sadly that never happened and YT just did a complete sweep demonitizing and restricting mature content, and the site continues to become flandarized with everyone using childish replacement words to talk about serious topics even in the comment section so that it doesn't get auto removed
There are plenty of content creators that said it's not really happening and they ad revenue is the same. The only people that seem to have less revenue where people that used specific tags or talked about politics.
I don't think advertisers are going to accept this content classification system. Even if they implement it successfully. They have to ban extremist content, and they also have to ban people calling hits on other people. I actually can't believe this has to be said.
Its crazy how many streamers make a lot of money from ads than from actual subs/members probably many of us were not aware of this cause it was a dont tell or just maybe just certain individuals live of that.. but a guy making 5-7k a day just for twitch ads its crazy
He's an outlier, he was doing a subathon and he used a little photoshop voodoo to make his numbers look better than they actually were. during his entire subathon he made $400k from ads, but note the stream is running 24/7 for a month. the moment he goes back to regular streaming his ad revenue is going to drop regardless. He was just band wagoning. The adpocolypse is real per Twitch streamers, however it's no where near what he was saying in terms of revenue
From other ppl who work in advertising, i'm told that advertisers don't really care about the content that they're advertising over. What they care about is getting wrapped up in the controversy of being implied to endorse creators who are wither regularly peoblematic or simply had a one-time lapse in judgment. This is a kind of cache 22 situation where the audience are captured by the authenticuty of content creators, but the lack of media training makes even the most milk toast influencer a brand risk

I don't understand. I've still gotten tons of ads during the (apocalypse). if anything it seems like I've gotten more. Though, these ads are mostly in straightforward gaming channels, not politically controversial stuff.

This was after listening to you saying "stop streaming and start making content!" I did that and I wanted to let you know you are one of the best creators/business talkers on TH-cam! Thanks for the advise!
I don't think twitch will ban politics partly because too many people in twitch agree with the extremists and see it as their moral authority to preach about it
It's pretty wild when everyone involved with a company are willing to let their company and jobs die, rather than just enforce the rules equally and fairly.
Twitch has made so many poor decisions over the years that are either questionable or just not viewer or even content creator friendly. Putting restrictions on ads so you have to go through Twitch to have a sponsored stream, allowing nudity for short amount of time, having 50/50 revenue split, inconsiderate of smaller or medium streamers, and the frequent ads ruin the experience of the viewers.
That guy with the 10 grand a day to 2 grand a day also said that he could become a mailman, would be the same. That shows the entitlement and complete lack of connection to reality that some of these guys developed. $2k a day is still $60k a month, which puts them well into the 1% of earners in the US
another thing that doesnt help twitch's case. the same ad over n over. When served ads while watching a stream, I have seen the same ad played back to back 3 times. over the span of 180 seconds.
The amount of stream hours -- the amount of people speaking into microphones for 8 hours at a time -- there is no way Twitch is utilizing the sheer amount of data available to itself in an optimal way.
11.18 really enjoy your intelligent videos. as a hr professional who games on twitch, just wanna say ur videos are a blast and you are always teaching me something.
I think you're going about it the wrong way (I'm assuming good faith here) I've been consuming TH-cam content for many years , I cannot remember what particular ad was played on which video - to think that people will associate ad with video being an endorsement is silly.
pre-roll ads are why i stopped watching anyone on twitch. I want to see what the hell is happening on a stream before i sit and watch, you serve me 3 minutes of ads before I can watch the stream, i'm out.
I don’t understand why twitch would even allow this during a live stream? 11 ads that you can not skip is down right criminal. Let’s say I subscribe for 6 months. That doesn’t give me enough time. It’s basically a money grab for streamers just because the ads are removed. You are literally not only hurting the streamers but people that want to see the streamers live. Not everyone can subscribe
I thought they did put in targeted ads. The only people complaining about reduced ad revenue are political steamers. They also need to fairly and uniformity enforce their tos though. Someone like hasan playing terrorist propaganda, platforming a literal terrorist and saying things like "America deserved 9/11" should be permanently banned not lauded by twitch.

It's really odd to me that after Twitch lost a lot of its highest performing and risky streamers to other platforms they are now having an advertiser problem.
Lol, they got rid of the non terrorist streamers and then twitch hating jews became common knowledge because that's the only group they didn't ban.
The Hasan happy birthday clip is wild stuff. TH-cam will send you your diamond play button one day and then ban your ash the next if you step out of line. They literally make the big company look better.
Left Twitch for TH-cam years ago. It was obvious back then that Twitch was doomed.
@@NitehawkGaming In my opinion the only reason to be on Twitch is that you're already a big streamer.

11:18 that’s a fun engagement method to get people to comment. This is why I watch you 👍
Twitch has been trying to cut corners forever at this point.
Twitch doesn't care about their creators at all. They care about themselves
@@TommyDavidVerbaland hasan
@@TommyDavidVerbal - That's literally every platform, every business. And fixing this is not only in the creators best interest, but their own. Strange comment, lmao
@maxadrums the difference is youtube was willing to invest in the long game to help its creators and ultimately them while twitch prefers to limp along.
@@georgeforeman1097 but that’s literally TH-cam caring about themselves. It’s in their best interest to fix it. Just as it should be Twitch’s. Hopefully they do, and not “too late” (it’s already too late, but before they go under..)
Forgot that he is a huge Hasan fan so he covers for him constantly which is why him and his friends get away with so much that led to this point
As someone who watched ludwig video i would like to say that asmongold did nothing wrong
Except for all the heinous reaction stuff
Honestly... dark mode white board/note pad made my day!
I’m sure this will get buried. Didn’t Hassan stop running ads on his streams weeks ago when his contract was up? I could swear he’s just been doing memberships for a few weeks now, so it’s confusing why he’d be targeted at this moment.
"Oh that one is just a head"
"He's a react streamer"
"He doesn't have a body cause his content is not so good"
Dammit I got coffee in my nose
If SME and UMG knew, that every streamer on twitch just forgot (again) that DMCA exist, Twitch is gone in no time. Ads + DMCA would be an overkill at this point
In other words, Twitch's worst enemy is TIME.

good overview, came looking to see some real insight as compared to twitch streamers talking about via a drama lens
You might want to update this video now as TheStockGuy confirmed the ad rev drop off was down to his tag choices. He changed them and the ad revenue has returned to normal.
So the next twitch backdoor not to put the correct tag since it's the creators choice and wrong tags aren't against TOS or enforced

11:18 ! still here, keep up the awesome content; so glad you do this!
A query I would have is;
To my understanding (which may definitely be wrong haha) the purchase of Twitch was for the Live Streaming technology.
They should be advertising Amazon products on Twitch. I have no idea why they haven't done it yet
@@HH-le1vi I remember them doing (may still do it) the prime video stuff, where streamers could react/watchalong for prime series. But can't remember other examples than that
They too much with the ads. I go watch a stream and a minute in I'm hit with 10 ads, I'd just close app not come back
11:18 was waiting for this video.
As much as people love to point fingers at people for CAUSING this, reasonable people will agree that this was needed and inevitable.

11:18 still here 🎉
Loving the coverage, checking in at 11:18
There are plenty of content creators that said it's not really happening and they ad revenue is the same.

Hello Devin, I want to say thank you for your videos! Over the years I've been listening to you and you have served as my unofficial social media advisor! l just got partnered on TH-cam today!
Putting restrictions on ads so you have to go through Twitch to have a sponsored stream, allowing nudity for short amount of time, having 50/50 revenue split, inconsiderate of smaller or medium streamers, and the frequent ads ruin the experience of the viewers.
great video Devin, thanks for covering this!
That guy with the 10 grand a day to 2 grand a day also said that he could become a mailman, would be the same.
That shows the entitlement and complete lack of connection to reality that some of these guys developed. $2k a day is still $60k a month, which puts them well into the 1% of earners in the US
What a shame, he was a good man, what a rotten way to die.
another thing that doesnt help twitch's case. the same ad over n over. When served ads while watching a stream, I have seen the same ad played back to back 3 times. over the span of 180 seconds.
11:18 still here, always high quality content from your side, love it!
The amount of stream hours -- the amount of people speaking into microphones for 8 hours at a time -- there is no way Twitch is utilizing the sheer amount of data available to itself in an optimal way.
If they can't sustain a business without ads after all this time, they deserve to go under. Turbo should be the *primary* monetization method.

Those 3 minute ad segments just ruins all experience. Especially if im channel hopping
pre-roll ads are why i stopped watching anyone on twitch.
11:18 Still here, even though you are in the background while I do some work 😅
I thought they did put in targeted ads.
Q: Why did Twitch not adopt TH-cam policy of moderation (gradient of warnings, strikes, demonetisation ... to perma ban)? Bad management?

he also managed to "cover" this story, without mentioning a single time that Hasan and his loser waiting room buddies are literally the entire reason this is happening. In fact he went through the story, only mentioning hasans name once and it had nothing to do with hasan being the cause, it was hasan blaming asmongold for it, when asmongold literally had nothing to do with it, except for his ban showing twitch's double standard and opening peoples eyes to what was happening there (since hasan is 100x worse than asmongold, daily, and never gets banned)
@@tooitchy oh absolutely agree. Lud literally made this video after receiving a massive load from Hamasabi.. and not to mention, he HE EVEN DID THE RE-EDIT thing again.. apparently the part about Mizkif "pointing to Hasan to blame" was too much for Hasan to endure and it got snipped out. UN-EFFIN-BELIEVABLE. Not to mention, Hasan isn't the only big person involved here.. Ethan, a major OG TH-camr who was involved in the YT Apocalypse and endured through all this history made numerous massive, important video that kicked the ball moving.. and not just against Hasan.. but SNEAKO and FnF's quick unbanning's..
Lud literally couldn't even take the easy dunk on some of the most hated people on media b/c the mere mention of ANY relevant info on this would literally lead back to Hasan like that old Kevin Bacon meme of 7 degrees of anyone relating back to him.. except here it'd be 2 degrees for EVERYTHING.. ESP Asmongold. Asmon didn't do ANYTHING that significant. He said something arguably subjective, but Twitch determined stepped over TOS, he received a smack, and did an apology and cleaned his room. that was that.
To try to throw everything on Asmongolds ban like people were psychofantically so upset by this that the ADL? Congressmen? etc all got involved is ludicrous. If anything, Asmons size and popularity only brought something TANGIBLE that many eyes could finally see the rot within Twitch where Hasan has said and done things on par and worse than Asmon through 1000's of clips.. yet not once receiving a nudge. The festering in Twitch was already there.. it just needed a fuse to be lit.
That's the most Asmon had a hand in.. but again, not without the help of other loud figures like Dan (Can't Stream, not Clancy), Ethan refusing to let go and rightfully being upset, Devin immediately understanding and becoming the most rational voice for solutions, basically all YT commentary getting involved.. plus even OTHER Twitch partners having had enough and finally making noise like Tectone, Quin, Mercs, Mizkif etc.. and ofc, finally, Destiny (also being a prime example as a casualty of the double standard of how his permaban was over something SO milquetoast, yet SNEAKO and FnF were more worthy of an unban??)
11:18 crew - at this point, from the point of view of someone coming back to content creation and streaming after a hella long break - twitch is just an extra link to add to Restream and if someone follows, tosses coin or discovers my other links - great! Otherwise - twitch only gets my 0 effort content - no eggs are going in that basket
This was very informative. Can't decide if the cute bucket or the savage shade thrown against react streamers was the best part.

I'd argue 2k per day is a pretty livable wage, some people still earn that per month lol
even in california 2k per day is a ton of money and that's only advertising revenue, if I made that per day i'd probably retire within a year
7:15 It's pretty subjective to say youtube "properly" identifies content and probably objectively wrong that it does this all with AI. It is objectively false that youtube is better for everyone as there were clear losers. It is event in the slide under 2017 - 2019. Being biggest does not make opinions correct - first mover, industry dominance, anti-competitive behavior, for example, can all p[ay into making a company the biggest in its field.

I don't know what will happen, because from what I've heard, twitch, as a company, has NEVER been profitable.
it has been a long time since i last watched any stream on twitch, the reason for that is the "ad waves" that i get every f*cking time i enter a stream, literally 1 or 2 minutes of ads is insane for me, i heard YT is also becoming like that but i got premium here, and the turbo on twitch is just too expensive for something that i hardly use now a days, if it was 2 or 3 years ago where i would stay 3 or 4 hours per day on twitch than it would be worth.
