Rory learned how to channel his "easy speed" into magnificent live performances. He was able to get himself and his band to play with incredible intensity and tempo without wasting unnecessary energy. Watching and listening to his live youtube shows [never saw him in person], I pick up that Rory feeds his energy to the band and they feed off him, yet he has an inexhaustible way of sustaining his energy for the full duration of his shows. He creates a "force of nature" in every live show I've seen on youtube. In Sept, 2023, I was in Ballyshannon, and met a gentleman who was a partner in a local art co-op, who knew Rory when he was a child, and we spent the better part of an afternoon having tea and telling Rory stories. Even though Rory's family moved to Cork, the family would return frequently during his childhood and the man was one of the friends that Rory would visit. There is a Rory Gallagher Festival that is put on every summer in Ballyshannon. Maybe someday I'll get back there to catch it. But Rory and I share the same birth year, so we'll see......

👍 Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher - ZZ Top 4 bucks It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and BG made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, and Rod. Thank You! Keep Rockin, Gerry! (eta & Billy n Frank!)
Born and raised in the USA, and my top 2 guitarist of all-time are Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher. Vivian Campbell, John Sykes, and Eric Bell are a few more very good lead guitarist from Ireland.
my absolute ever favourite blues rock guitarist. Sadly I discovered him a few years after his passing, and never saw him on stage. It was the father of a University friend, and amateur blues musician too, who introduced his music to me. Sadly, he also died a few years ago. So both are now strongly linked in my mind, and every time I listen to Rory, I've a tought for my friend and her father. Thank Daniel for letting me discover Rory, SRV and Johnny Winter. BTW, I had the opportunity to go to a concert of "9 below Zero", which was basically Gerry McAvoy 's band (that bassist with mad skills). They rocked the place to the ground❤ Rory's rhythm section was no joke!
A story I read was that Jimi Hendrix was on some talk show and the host asked him how it felt to be the greatest rock guitarist in the world. Hendrix replied that the host needed to ask Rory Gallagher instead.
Forget the Rolling Stone list, Rory is widely regarded in the industry as one of the greatest rock/ blues guitarists of all time - - likely top 5. Jimi Hendrix was a big fan on Rory. This song is great but doesn't capture Rory's legendary playing on his worn down '61 Strat - - - please consider reacting to 'Do You Read Me - Rock goes to college 1979' to see Rory in all his glory
If I'm not mistaken he bought the first gifts and guitar ever sold in Ireland he was awesome love his body of work this is a rabbit hole you certainly need to dive into at first I've been a fan since the mid-70s
I'm so glad I listened to my mate when he said you want to hear a proper guitarist go listen to Rory Gallagher now I am here listening this amazing performance. R.I.P Rory Gallagher you amazing genius. 🤘❤
There is a line in one of Rory's great songs, A Million Miles Away that goes "and the piano man has caught the last bus home". Lou Martin's died in 2012 and his tombstone has that line on it.
A certain Mr Gary Moore is from N.Ireland. Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughan, are my top 3 along with Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist's before crash, take care from Belfast N.Ireland..
Sadly only Gerry McAvoy (bassist) is still alive. Rory passed in 1995, Lou Martin (keyboards) passed 2012 and Rod de'Ath (drummer) passed in 2014. McAvoy is Irish as was Gallagher and Martin; de'Ath was Welsh. My personal favourite track of Rory's was Tattoo'd Lady especially the live version for Irish Tour 74 (which I believe I bought on cassette tape on its release !!) The counter play on Tattoo'd Lady between Rory and Matin on his electric piano is awesome.

My favorite guitarist ever. Live shows were so high energy and lasted at 3 hours--great memories of the shows I was honored to attend. The bassist, Gerry McAvoy, played with him for 30 years. Lou Martin, keyboards, came in and out of the band. Rod D'Ath was my favorite drummer of the 3 different, main drummers he had in the band over the years. Rolling Stone bashed them as mediocre and not up to Rory's talent--I'd call that writer mediocre at best. Check out the story and look of his main guitar, the 61 Strat. Tattoo'd Lady, Calling Card, Bad Penny, Shin Kicker, Moonchild, A Million Miles Away, I Fall Apart are some of my favorites.Going to My Hometown, he brings out a mandolin. Pistol Slapper Blues/Too Much Alcohol are acoustic solos.
Rolling Stone critics like to make themselves look good, by putting down other musicians. D'Ath is no Ginger Baker, but he was perfect for Rory's music.
Jimi Hendrix once said of Rory, "He's the best guitarist that nobody outside of Ireland and the UK, has never heard about." Rory was never about the Big money, but all about the music, and the fans. He would rather play in a small intimate venue of a couple thousand people, rather than a huge football stadium of 50, 000, and get more money, but the music sound as good. Rory has to be at least top 3 guitar player all time with Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny Winter.
Thanks for this. I started to go to Concerts in London in 1971 and, somehow, to my eternal regret, missed Roty. My loss and, eventually, the World's,after his passing. GARY MOORE is another brilliant Irish guitarist and 10 years ago,we lost Gary too. I bought my first records in 1960 and 2 STRONG Recommendations: 1/ Gary Moore in Paris: "I've Still Got The Blues For You" 2/ Gary Moore: in Montreux: "Parisienne Walkways" and, please, make sure you get the start of that one as there is a surprise:)
Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.
He came back on after the closing titles and did an extra half hour. Saw this line - up twice, including on Irish Tour. Best number he did was 'Tatood Lady' - his favourite opener. I loved it.
Irish Guitarists- Eric Bell, Gary Moore, Vivian Campbell but Rory is the man! I'm sure there are more names I missed but thats a starting point for ya.
As a teenage boy, Brian May of Queen use to go with his mates to see Rory's band Taste and Brian tells his story of how humble Rory was to speak with him after a gig about his sound and thats when Brian purchasd his first electric guitar and a Vox A30 amplifier. The rest is history as they say. Rory also gave Canadian legends Rush a major break with a support slot on a tour, later they'd return the favour and Rory would support Rush. They remained friends till Rorys passing. A rare gem was Rory who remained true to his craft till the end.
Not a Taste song. An old blues number by Willie Harris. Can’t recall Rory doing it with Taste but it did become a live favourite after the group split.
Rory was always at home on stage, it’s where he felt he belonged, studio albums and live performances were his lifeblood, he refused on many occasions to do mainstream chart singles, he’d no interest..he was an absolute lovely guy too, very shy & reserved. A sad sad loss at such an early age. R.I.P Rock minstrel.
For reasons I don't clearly understand, Rory and a number of other blues guitarists, never wrote radio friendly songs. You could make a lot of money, if you wrote radio friendly songs but he never did.
Try 'Edged In Blue' from Calling Card. Always sounded like a hit single to me, and it was before 'Sultans Of Swing' (listen to the solo at the end). But Rory wouldn't release singles.
I'm from Ballyshannon, Ireland, Rorys birth place and home to the annual Rory tribute festival. I'm a hugh fan and met him once on the streets of Ballyshannon though never heard him live. However there is an Italian guitarist called Simone Gallassi who plays the Rory festival whom I'm sure Rory himself would pay to see.
I know Rory and his music well - and have loved from the 70s. But I think SalvoG sums it up real well. Rory's big talent was simply being a nice guy who loved music and loved playing for the people. He was of the people and for the people. Let's all rejoice in that and enjoy his music !
Rory & Gary Moore two Irish musical legends
Moore was very, very good, but wouldn't lace Rory's boots for guitar, vocals or songwriting. Come on, get real.
Gary is good. Rory is the greatest
I saw Rory and Taste open for Blind Faith in 1969. Delaney Bonnie and Friend where another opener, to me Rory blew them off the stage and out of the building. Jim

Both in Thin Lizzy (albiet never together)

He would rather play in a small intimate venue of a couple thousand people, rather than a huge football stadium of 50, 000, and get more money, but the music sound as good.
Rory has to be at least top 3 guitar player all time with Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny Winter.
Bullfrog Blues
First release by William Harris (December 1928)
The Canned Heat version is another to listen to. June 9, 1967.
Thanks for this. I started to go to Concerts in London in 1971 and, somehow, to my eternal regret, missed Roty. My loss and, eventually, the World's,after his passing.
GARY MOORE is another brilliant Irish guitarist and 10 years ago,we lost Gary too. I bought my first records in 1960 and 2 STRONG Recommendations:
1/ Gary Moore in Paris: "I've Still Got The Blues For You"
2/ Gary Moore: in Montreux: "Parisienne Walkways" and, please, make sure you get the start of that one as there is a surprise:)
I loved it.
Other Irish guitarists: Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy); Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard); Edge (U2) and Philip Donnelly “the Clontarf Cowboy” - to name a few……
That there be a list of Irish people who just own guitars….
The best to ever do it Rory Gallagher 💯☘️🎸🔥
This must be the best performance ever of a four man group headlined by a goat guitarist god!!!!!!!!
Irish Guitarists- Eric Bell, Gary Moore, Vivian Campbell but Rory is the man! I'm sure there are more names I missed but thats a starting point for ya.
May I add Johnny Fean to your fine selection.
You must look up another amazing Irish guitarist in Gary Moore
Irish Tour is my favorit ❤RIP RORY
Awesome, one of the best guitarists! And what a great bass player! 🎸🎸🎸🎶👍
Gerry Mcavoy. The only one of this line up still alive. Currently playing in Band of Friends. Rory tribute act.
Rory was in a band called “Taste” prior to his solo work, this is one of those songs..
Not a Taste song. An old blues number by Willie Harris. Can’t recall Rory doing it with Taste but it did become a live favourite after the group split.
Rory era o cara...... Meu vício.....🎸🎶☮️🍀
Saw him live four times in the early 70s. Always amazing. My favourite is "Shadow Play" Live in Montreux 1979. (Video by NEA ZIXNH)
Absolutely unbelievable... Brings tears to my eyes. How can musicians bring such emotion to their playing?
For reasons I don't clearly understand, Rory and a number of other blues guitarists, never wrote radio friendly songs. You could make a lot of money, if you wrote radio friendly songs but he never did.
Radio wanted pop music, Rory never had any intention of being a 'pop-star'.
Try 'Edged In Blue' from Calling Card. Always sounded like a hit single to me, and it was before 'Sultans Of Swing' (listen to the solo at the end). But Rory wouldn't release singles.
and shadow play Rory was brilliant singing guitar 🎸 very talented god rest him ❤
Gary Moore was from Northern Ireland
We just call it ireland
🇮🇪
Which makes him Irish. Just like Belfast boy Van Morrison.
Lovin’ the blues rock!
Lucky enough to see him live a few times in Dublin in the seventies. Brilliant....
Love Rory as a musician and as a beautiful person 🎸
I saw Rory live in the late 70s, best live act ever! ❤
Somewhere on your list please add The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (killer name right?)
Lucky to have seen the man 3 times.Fantastic gigs, nicest guy too.Came to front of stage aftershow and talked to punters ☘😎👍
Thanks for video of Rory.Still Rockin and gaining new fans every year.
RORY is for ever the BEST ! RIP
Irish guitarists????? Try the world's best EVER....Gary Moore playing The Messiah Will Come Again. You'll be shocked and you'll be hooked.
I know Rory and his music well - and have loved from the 70s. But I think SalvoG sums it up real well. Rory's big talent was simply being a nice guy who loved music and loved playing for the people. He was of the people and for the people. Let's all rejoice in that and enjoy his music !
The look on your face - priceless! Just a few people on fire blowing the roof off without special effects and gimmicks!
