This song is the title track from their debut album. It wasn't a massive hit, but did OK, it's a favourite with older muse fans though who were there at the beginning of there career. This specific show had the set list picked by the fans, so there are some tracks in this show that muse hadn't played in years, decades in some cases.
Indeed, Showbiz was the song that really got me into Muse, about 22 years ago! They hardly ever play it live so this was a real treat. I'm very nearly 40 and I never heard it on the radio in the UK though.

"Was this a popular song?" To liken it to movies: This song is like a cult classic film. Wasn't well received by the general masses but it was really well recieved by a core group of fans who love it to this day.
Loving this review! So pumped you enjoyed it! I had a hunch you might be more accepting of his falsetto here than in some other Muse takes you've seen. A couple of facts (and answers) -This was actually a fan-made video from purely fan captured videos. Muse usually gives the fanbase a "Christmas gift" every year, and they gave the pro-audio to the fans to lineup with the video! -This was a small gig where Muse had fans vote for deep cuts in their catalogue. Showbiz had not really been played much (if at all) in 11 years at the time, and the fans probably were most stoked for this one. It is from their debut album "Showbiz", 1999. I have never once heard it on American radio or anything, but definitely a hit amongst fans. That explains Matt saying "ohh it's a killer, it's a killer" at the end. He knows it's good, I do think it strains his voice though, so they keep it a rare treat. -They played it a half-step down (I think) and I personally like this version best. Others may disagree! I thought you'd like the energy of this performance and the crowd being bad-ass as well. -Watching a few performances from Muse this week (they're back), they have a new "4th instrumentalist", and you can visually see Matt and him making sooooo many visual queues, as they develop chemistry. -The ending on the album kind of fades out with some drumming that mimics the intro, but here, they just added a jam from another older obscure Muse song.
One important consideration for this song is it is very taxing vocally - has a lot of high notes and powerful wailing. They released their first album when Matt was 19 or 20 years old, he is now in his 40s and of course his voice has changed over the years. The studio version of this was the first Muse song I heard and I was entranced, playing it back over and over for a good few hours. It is absolutely beautiful.
Muse are certainly carving out their niche on this channel! And I'm here for it, given all the songs you've done so far, Showbiz being no exception to that. This one was really cool, not gonna lie, I think I'm a fan now!
Certainly not a popular/hit song, but is considered to be one of the favourites amongst us Muse fans. I would say it's in my top 10, but that's a tough one! It's from their first album by the same name. I love the rawness of this song, and the build up. Great reaction!
I mean, I’m not a massive Muse fan but I still listen to this album from time to time and, while it is very much “of its time” this particular song definitely stands out and stands the test of time
this was one of their "fan concerts" where you could vote for which songs they were going to play and this was one of those that won. They dont usually play it, even though its their most requested song, I guess cause it takes a strain on the singers if he had to play it for a whole year EDIT: also the outro is another muse song called "Ashamed"
also this was the title song of the first album, which got a full release in the US and flopped. So much so, that their 2nd album didnt even get released in the US until the 3rd album
Regarding your question about the popularity of the song: it's not one of the most popular songs, but keep in mind this is a smaller venue they're playing at, so it's gonna be packed mostly with hardcore Muse fans, that's why they know the lyrics, and that's why they know which song it is as soon as it starts playing.

Showbiz wasn't a hit for the band, but it's grown popular amongst fans due to its very satisfying build-up, and also for Matt hitting one of his highest notes at the end (I think around G#5). Also, as Muse have evolved and their catalogue of songs has expanded, it's become increasingly rare for Muse to play this song live, which may also be in part due to how challenging it is to sing. So on the rare occasion Muse does play it, fans tend to go wild. I've been lucky enough to see this song live twice and both times the performance and the atmosphere was incredible :)

Please don't forget to add Kill or be killed their new unreleased song live concert in your list of reactions. It's heavy metal song.
Kill or Be Killed is my Silver request for August ;) I think "popular" has some different meanings. Showbiz isn't popular in the sense that it doesn't get radio play. It's popular amongst Muse fans that know what's up. And now, DH :)
@@wewantthecup gotcha, yes I misunderstood. Showbiz album in general wasn't popular in radio nor on Mtv back then. But I think muscle museum was popular on tv back in my time. And thank you for requesting Kill or be killed.
As a Muse fan, I would say this song is everyone's favorite song that took the time to really listen to muse. When the album Showbiz came out the top 3 tracks of the album were Muscle Museum, Uno, and Sunburn. So this song is definitely a hidden gem within the album. ALTHOUGH muse is a huge band- for those that love all of their music we base old muse off this and their "space rock" phase.
Showbiz was not a single by the band, it was a song that we fans made "famous", I think Muse is a band that is enjoyable if you listen to it on CD but it is definitely crazy to see and hear them live, and there are many songs that THEY ARE NOT SINGLES but that in the fan base they are very popular songs.
It is off of their debut album, showbiz, which didn't have any tracks that got radio play or were hits. The song is well known amongst the fans and it is considered to be one of muse's fan favorite songs.

This led to a semi organized movement in social media to have the older less played songs as well as the never performed live songs at the top of the list. It was pretty hype for us Muse fans as some deep cuts were brought up. It only has happened in Europe (UK and France) though, in the US we still only get the preset setlists containing their current album or biggest radio hits with the rare deep cut song thrown in.
Great reaction! The song is not very popular, but an early one that's beloved by fans. If you get the chance to see them live, do yourself the favor and go towards the front; we really do know all the songs
the live performance of this when the band was young is an interesting view of it. To see them play it around the time they made the song makes it make more sense, and young matts vocals are very interesting :)

This was one of 'the' defining songs of their first album. I would recommend their album Hullabaloo live at Le Zenith for some of their early stuff. Amazing
Yeah DH just to let you know Matt uses a lot of preprogrammed MIDI effects that the techs look after so he can focus on moving around, singing and his playing. He’ll do it himself in some rare cases that you may have seen, like the solo in Reapers.
Showbiz is indeed pretty old song of Muse, It is not just a song but their album name. If I'm not mistaken it was released somewhere around end of 90's. It was the first album they released as well. I really like their first two albums and when they were still not "stadium" size band, they played those first two albums in clubs and the atmosphere was of the roof. Saw them three times and the last time they already found their style that they represents nowadays and I'm not really buying that anymore. Too pop to my taste! (Nothing wrong with POP, but it's just not for me)
David, This was the title track from the very first album. For the best sing along I would say ‘Plug in baby’ gets the best crowd response.. Muse present themselves as a 3 piece but on stage they are always a 4 piece with a multi instrumentalist called Morgan Nicholls lurking in the shadows usually well off the camera tracks. Muse’s songs are too complex to do with just three and whilst Matt plays all the guitar and keys parts on the albums he needs help on stage. Morgan shuns the limelight and is seemingly quite happy to sit in the background but his contribution is essential particularly on synth parts in the big production numbers.
I believe you have reacted to their song Muscle Museum but theres a clip of that song from this very gig and you mention the crowd singing as loud as Matt, well in that specific clip they sing so loud that Matt stops singing and let's the crowd carry on! Id recommend checking it out for sure!
Hi DH! (I see everyone is calling you DH) great episode. Not because you gave it a really good score, you reacted to one of the best Muse songs (for me) They already commented is kinda popular mostly in Europe (Muse didn't become popular in the U.S. until their 3rd album) But yeah, thanks man! Also they are going to Los Angeles on October 4th, Sacramento CA. On the 9th and Chicago on the 11th, so if you can make it I'm sure you'll have fun! Good you picked up the vocals at the end sounding like a guitar he used to do that on other songs too (old ones) but his range is not the same nowadays. Edit: So you are saying there IS a TOP 10 already 😅
You Definitely need to react to their new song they played live a few weeks ago "Kill or be Killed", its considered to be one of their best songs in a LONG time
Always loved this song and love your reaction David, genuinely for me the 1st 4 albums are my personal favourites, nor a fan of how their sound has developed over the Years apart from the odd gem on each album, but that's just my opinion this is the sound I love from Muse, and vocally his falsetto is practicularly another instrumental at times as you heard here!
Hearing Plug in Baby on the radio was probably the song which brought Muse to my attention. You like a song , you buy the album and it goes from there. Showbiz came earlier but I love the song. I’ve got every Muse album and you’ll be hard pressed to find a bad song. There’s a decent back catalogue to review DH 😉 and some live performances to go with them. Have you done ‘Bliss’ at The Mayan ?
in the song "muscle museum" that you reacted from the same album, he also does guitar solo with his vocal even faster and louder and you didn't even notice or comment hsaohsao. it was so perfect that you must have thought it was your guitar even, in studio music it's like that too.
It's not a popular song per say, it wasn't even a single. But it is a popular song among fans. It's one of the three most popular songs from their first album (among fans). Most fans would put it in their top 10/20.
Not in my Top 10 kkkk, I don't have an order yet, but it would be: 1.Space Dementia 2.Muscle Munseum. 3.New born, 4.Thoungs of dying atheist, 5.Megalomania, 6.Apocalypse Please. 7. Unnatural Selection, 8.Assasins, 9. Butterflies and Hurricanes, 10. Nature_1 or Eternaly missed
@@LucasGammer It's not in my top 10 either, but it's not that far ^^ But even if they're not in your top, you can't deny that songs like Citizen Erased and Showbiz are really popular songs among the fandom !
I chose this take because of the energy, and I personally like this version most, sonically. I 100% love all the early 2000 versions. The two in "Origin Of Muse" are two of my favorites, but consider my choice here a strategic one, as I don't think DH would have liked the higher pitched earlier performances as much as this one. And again, personally this is MY favorite, especially since "Muse France" put together this epic crowd sourced multicam, with Muse then throwing them the bone of pro-audio.

This is one of their best songs 💜
This song was ahead of its time. It was not the most popular back then. But once the band stopped playing it, everyone got nostalgic.
Showbiz 😍
You Definitely need to react to their new song they played live a few weeks ago "Kill or be Killed", its considered to be one of their best songs in a LONG time
Great review as always . Can’t wait til you react to kill or be killed by these guys . Someone please request it!!
Ahhh man i love this song
Always loved this song and love your reaction David, genuinely for me the 1st 4 albums are my personal favourites, nor a fan of how their sound has developed over the Years apart from the odd gem on each album, but that's just my opinion this is the sound I love from Muse, and vocally his falsetto is practicularly another instrumental at times as you heard here!
He's got a built-in wah
20:15 my favorite moment in David Heretic Muse history.
The Hullabaloo version is much more powerful and intense.
Yeah showbiz was big in the uk and Europe. It was the debut. Probs not as popular in the u.s, top 10 muse tune! 🤘🏻
He can sing so well. So much power. His mouth is so far away from the mic sometimes.
Always gotta love some early Muse
in the song "muscle museum" that you reacted from the same album, he also does guitar solo with his vocal even faster and louder and you didn't even notice or comment hsaohsao. it was so perfect that you must have thought it was your guitar even, in studio music it's like that too.
He also does this on Knights of Cydonia before the verse (haven't looked to see if DH picked up on it or not)
With the Wah you're talking about aprox 4 minutes into your video, it could be an auto wah pedal or amp effect?
A lot of his effects are actually built in to the guitar he’s using 👍
Of course this is a popular song 😂 a legend song 👍🔥
I don't know for sure which Muse song is my favorite, but when someone ask me, I ever say Showbiz. I'm 44😌
It’s an old song they rarely perform, this was the first time live since 2006 because it’s so demanding on Matts vocals.
First album of muse with the label of Madonna, they are very young 😂😂
The best song in their 1st album, though not the most popular as it genre is not pop song. The handler is an enhancement of this song
16:27 I was most curious how you'd feel about the bass. Happy you touched on it.
please react Muse - Won't Stand Down at MTv Award and Muse - Kill or Be Killed
this song was popular'ish, but this was huge amongst musers
this is the song with matt's vocal highest note in all songs
This it's a midi wah or auto filter line 6 type patch
Great
I'm fairly certain that Matt Bellamy wrote this song before he was 20
Muse - Tempelhof Sounds Festival, Berlin - @ARTE Concert th-cam.com/video/FyCL1wybpa4/w-d-xo.html
@@LucasGammer It's not in my top 10 either, but it's not that far ^^
But even if they're not in your top, you can't deny that songs like Citizen Erased and Showbiz are really popular songs among the fandom !
@@sorkaem Yes realy Citzen Erased great song. Teach us to cheat
My July Silver Muse request is 100% not going to live up to this. I choked. 😂🤷♂️
you should be reacting the new metal song from muse. Killed or be killed from NOVA ROCK 2022
Summary of Muse: "Was it necessary? No, but I liked it."
Me like
I don't believe that is a wah he's using, I think it's more of phase effect.
Amazing song but you should have taken an older show (around 2000-2001), Matt’s voice isn’t really fitting the song nowadays
@@wewantthecup gotcha
There are so so many gigs that are better than this. Reading 2006 being the top of the pile
not a massive hit, no.
