In this Broadcast Award-winning, BAFTA and Emmy Award-nominated entertainment show, Taskmaster tyrant Greg Davies (Man Down, Cuckoo), with the help of his loyal assistant Alex Horne (The Horne Section and the show’s creator), sets out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper-competitive comedians.

Just remember: there's months between the filmed tasks and the studio. Joe spent ALL that time thinking he got it right. It adds a whole other level to the disappointment.
Not to mention it was likely one of the first tasks they shot, so I get the impression Joe thought he nailed that and was satisfied with his one victory so didn't really care about doing a good job in most of the other tasks (nursery rhyme and egg come to mind)
I just can't imagine what was going on in his head at that moment. Sitting there all smug about himself thinking he absolutely nailed that one. Then watching all the other attempts with nobody even close to what he achieved. Finally it is time, his glorious hole in one is on the big screen, the moment he's been waiting for. All eyes on him as the audience cheered for his magnificence... and then the replay zooms in on his shoe.

One of the greatest in all TV. Even though he plays a character, when he begs Greg not to take it away, you can tell it's completely genuine.

Joe's was both one of the shortest and one of the longest tasks, one of the highest joys and one of the saddest lows of the show. What a journey for a potato throw!
This was my first time seeing the potato throw. It was a rollercoaster; such a perfect shot, then the toes touching the carpet...
It was the best of tasks, it was the worst of tasks, it was the age of preparation, it was the age of instants, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of red, it was the season of green, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair...

@@CaptainEasypants I've seen it more than a dozen times, and it never fails to send me on a rollercoaster of emotions. Definitely a top 10 moment in the show.
Just a perfect example of good writing in a comedy show, absolutely brilliant.
Victoria's horror at the phone task... totally relatable. To the bones, I felt that.

The part that gets me about Joe's potato task is that they knew from the get that he didn't win, but they still let him celebrate!
Asked him how it felt and all 😂
So, the producers, in an attempt to amp up the moment sometimes warn people that they did well and ask them to really go hard on the celebration. Also Greg might have let him have the victory.
@@shepherd5711 That doesn't really follow. Nobody had to tell Joe he'd done well. It was pretty much physically impossible to do better.
And Alex Horne is the creative force behind the show, and I don't see him doing that. Defeats the purpose.

Instead, cut him down at the height of a celebration, like a birthday party or his wedding. Let him bask in his own greatest, let him learn what it is like to have something too important to lose. Let him ascend like Icarus, and then tear off his wings just as he is reaching for the sun. For, no man can survive the fall.

@@jimbobbby It's actually not clear. That part of the boot is bent, so his toes were probably just above the carpet. Someone in the comments even said it was confirmed by Alex.
Aisling’s candle task attempt just goes to show that sometimes enthusiasm can be both your biggest asset and your undoing…

Not as bad as when she instantly faked her sneeze right after reading the task, which essentially got her into the No Win Club, as she would have won that episode if she had sneezed within 48 hours
Paul always looks like a guy that lives nearby who started having his morning coffee then thought, "I think I'll walk over and see what's going on at the Taskmaster house today." Then when he got there he figured he'd give it a go.
He was just channeling his inner Arthur Dent who forgot the towel. :)
I loved watching the potato task again, especially since I previously missed Joe's EPIC side-eye at Doc saying "That's harsh!" after voting to NOT give Joe the five points @19:45.

Love their play off each other. Joe definitely should’ve gotten the points but it made for one of the best moments of the show.
In the end it's an entertainment show and him not getting the point was entertaining.

I mean...if they HAD given him the points, it wouldn't have caused near the stir it did lol so...from an entertainment standpoint I understand why they didn't. That being said, obviously it was pretty harsh 😂 and I feel like they could have retroactively made up for it somehow. But also, look at the outcome of James Acaster and the hulahoop debacle 🤣
Joe's potato throw and the 150 cheeky text prank where Mark had to text the taskmaster/davies for 5 months are two of the best bits from this show.
My analysis of Joe's attempt:
If you looks at the side profiling of his shoes worn in the attempt, you will notice the soles taper upwards towards the uppers at the toes of the shoes. As we all know Joe steps mostly on his heels which allows the toes of the shoes to actually ascend off of the ground leaving an open gap at the very end. In the footage of Joe's attempt on the controversial step, you can see a very slight shadow at the tip of the show under the toe leading me to conclude the following:
As a representative for the Wilkinson vs. Potato court case, the jury demands a bonus 5 points in the inevitable "Battle of the Joes" episode starring Joe Wilkinson, Joe Lycett, Jo Brand, the movie JoJo Rabbit and current president of the United States, Joe Biden. You may be thinking the five points is a lot as a bonus, but most have speculated that it won't change much. Still, it will settle our hearts.
Thank you for performing the necessary research in this. The verdict must be overturned.

Exactly! The overhead camera angle only shows that his shoe was OVER the red green, not that he actually touched it! I think about the upward tapering of a shoe every time I see this!
plus, when you actually look at where the potato landed, it hit the far side of the hole, midway up heightwise, and it then bounced to the center of the hole. even if he was a couple cms backwards, he still wouldve gotten the potato in the hole, it wouldntve been all rim

the part of the potato task that gets me the most is that you can see joes shoes (or, at least the ones hes wearing at the taping which looks similar to the ones in the task) curve upwards at the end, as is common for shoes. so its absolutely incredibly possible he wasnt standing on the green at all, just that the shoes were slightly above it
Two epic moments in the history of film will always make me cry. One is virtually all 45 minutes of "ending" to the Extended Edition of The Return of the King, and the other is "Please don't take it away from me".

I really liked when Alan Davies chose the portcullis scissors and just cut the string instead of bothering with darts and stuff. Should have been included in the video i think. But my favorite in this video is actually Desiree just slamming that drink while the others were struggling SO much. But Potatogate is the reason i started watching and subsequently fall in love with this show.
If I ever find someone who has never heard of or seen Taskmaster, I show them the whole Potatogate task. I feel like it sums up everything you need to know about the show!

I feel like there are other moments that should be included in this.
the "golf hole" segment will always be my favorite five minutes of non fiction television ever. the sheer comedic genius on display from all involved parties is absolutely incredible.

Teabag task was pretty great too, their first genius editing moment in my opinion.
Frank: "Someone's going to take the first 45 minutes to figure out they should be wet."
Romesh: "I'm thinking I should have wet them."
And in it's third year, Rhod's "extension."
I think Frank Skinner was recruited for S1 specifically to make the series more of a likely success.

How did Russell Howard's "call me when I'm needed" cricket bowl not make the cut?
and if you look closely at that one, you will see that Russell's foot is on the red wicket as much (if not more) than Joe's on the red green. I have always thought it so unfair that Russell got 5 points and Joe didn't.
@@jandkfidler7684 I think they allowed it because his foot wasn't on the red when he actually threw the ball, but honestly I think the mass disqualification in series 10 is the first time they actually fully stuck to rules on tasks with the red green.
Because watching Russell Howard effortlessly bowl and walk off with a smooth remark does pose the risk of sudden immaculate pregnancy in anyone of any gender! They have to be careful.
Joe’s potato throw will always make me laugh, no matter how many times I see it. Just the celebration he takes and then minutes later is groveling at the Taskmaster’s feet.

I genuinely think this is one of the greatest shows involving celebrities ever. It’s such a great leveller that endears these people to you because all the emotions are so real. The Joe throw and the Mike Wozniak fart are in my pantheon of all time great moments for emotional roller coasters

Here’s a tip for the phone call one, call customer service, they generally are not allowed to hang up on you, though sometimes you will just be mysteriously disconnected
except everyone in the task had to hang up when the other person said a forbidden word, so it may not have helped

I was with Desiree on that drinking task, I thought it was way too easy and baffled when everyone else had difficulty. At least here in Canada being able to chug a gross liquid fast is like a first year intro course. We used to drink this homemade wine from a kit mixed with kool-aid because it was ultra-cheap and it really was not something you sip.
Being able to chug one gross thing doesnt necessarily mean you can chug another gross thing

For the first task, there’s no rule about going to the caravan and getting the candle from the caravan and bringing it into the lab…

Thank you for leaving in the time after the red-green potato throw, not part of the task but a vital part of the aftermath and it should never be separated from the task.
Potato Gate is still the greatest and most depressing part of the entire show.
Alex had so much fun with Mark. They have been friends for so long that I like to imagine Alex just messes with him like this IRL for giggles.

When I saw her do it here I was impressed. Then I tried it myself and realized that it wasn't impressive at all.

For the phone task I would simply call the taxation office and do all the tasks while on hold for an hour

I have had just few moments in my life when I have felt like Joe when he threw that potato. I acted exactly the same, first not really believing that it happened, then getting confirmation that it happened, then getting a bit emotional and when I walked away from the situation I threw my hands up and took one last moment to look back that the thing I did actually happened. I totally believe that what Joe experienced there was totally genuine. And he should have got that!
Desiree drinking the juice in one go was extremely impressive.
Potatogate was my first exposure to this show... what a rollercoaster
Jon Richardson calling that the most exciting piece of sport he's seen in his life, and he's played top level Carrot in a Box... brings a tear. I move to dismantle the bloated and unoriginal Olympics and replace it with Taskmaster.
It just goes to show how traumatic Joe Potatogate was for us all that we forget:

Joes potato throw is what sold me on this show years ago. Still my favorite segment
again, alex has admitted elsewhere that another camera angle showed that joe's toe did not touch the carpet, and yet, if you rewatch the clip, you can see that doc's toes did touch the carpet, without jim being punished. i guess they figured it made "better" tv to punish joe.
...And if that is the case, they were very much correct.
While not the best, Joe's eating of the egg is still the best; he decided to make a lovely spread instead.
What makes Jo's potato task so embarrassing is the way he and everyone celebrates after it is first shown. And Alex and Greg, knowing what was coming, also join in the celebration. One of my favourite TV moments, this.
Aisling nearly puts the fire out just by putting the task down. It was almost a zero-second attempt.
It's been years, and over the years I have seen the potato in so many compilations... And it remains funny to this day.
Joe Lycett's mayonnaise was the fastest task ever.
With the candle, I still can't believe that no one got the candle from the caravan and brought it to the lab.

That candle task could have been interpreted the same way Richard Osman did the "exercise balls on the mat" - someone could have just brought the candle from the caravan to the lab and then lit it.

I’ve used Desiree’s drinking technique and it is really effective. Your best friend in that task is gravity.
He definitely deserved the points for the potato. Shoes are made in an arch, with the toes turning upward. His foot was only slightly hovering over the red green. He clearly wasn't touching it.
