    One of the most challenging and unforgiving arias ever written, and Alagna truly does it justice.

      Radames shouldnt sing with heavy voice, thats about the interpretation and also about tonality - there is no space for heroic (dramatique) voice with the line of other roles (barytonal and chorus) and on same time set up for romantic duets with amneris & aida...
      Shortly its more complex problem rather than corectly singing out "vicino al sole"..

To sing this aria you still need to keep the lyric quality of the voice and not try and spinto yourself into trouble. He is no Corelli I am afraid to say and should stick to his strengths.

    Reminds me of what Anna Russell said about dramatic sopranos: "A great many singers, no matter how charming, flexible, or nice their voice as it is, will strain every nerve to make themselves into dramatic sopranos, thereby ruining the very nice voice they already have." I think the same could be said of tenors. Carreras ruined his gorgeous lyric tenor by singing spinto, and Alagna is going the same way. I think the same also happened to Villazon, who started singing stuff too heavy for him.

He has a big lyric voice, big enough to sing the lighter spinto roles, but the big Verdi roles are voice killers if you're not a Giacomini, Cecchele, Lauri-Volpi or Filippeschi.

      To me it says a lot about the character of the people who start booing during a performance. There is a difference between decent criticism and bullying. I'm sorry for those who paid good money and wanted to see the whole performance undisturbed and, frankly, I don't understand why a theatre tolerates scandalous behaviour on the part of some members of the audience. In my opinion, it is not a question of being able to handle criticism or not: Any performance or performer can be affected (positively or negatively) by the atmosphere created by the audience. (If they cannot be, it shows that they don't care...) Interrupting the performance is not a proper way of voicing an opinion.

    • @juliah.5207
      @juliah.5207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't think this sort of "fire in the belly" is really conducive to a great performance though, which is the ultimate purpose after all. In my opinion, applause or lack of it is a clear indication of the opinion of the audience, aggression is totally unnecessary and can be harmful. (Not to mention that it's a method that can very easily be abused, to the detriment of quality and enjoyment.) As for the "ultimate judge", the audience consists of a lot of people. Which of them exactly should be the "ultimate judge" who can decide when to start booing? When I'm watching opera, I don't want any other members of the audience to decide which parts of the performance I can enjoy and how long, which is exactly what happens when a handful of people disturb the singer(s). I certainly wouldn't make such a harsh judgement before the whole performance is over. Regarding feelings, I believe that human feelings should always be taken into consideration when it's possible (it would make this world a much better place in general), and artists are especially sensitive people. They need to be sensitive because they do not only work with their instruments, they also work with their emotions, with their sensitivity. Opera is not about aggression or humiliation, it is about music, emotions and extraordinary human talent, things that should be cherished and cultivated with care.

      I'm glad Alagna left. Nobody should have to tolerate that kind of rude behaviour. Besides, not only are they bullying the performer they are also ruining the evening for the rest of the audience who paid a lot of money to come and enjoy the performance - and they may actually LIKE the singer! There were far more people applauding than booing. I have decided never to go to La Scala. I'm not going to pay a fortune just to be disturbed by these primitive idiots.

  • @unotenore
    @unotenore 14 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Alagna performed this with professional quality, but this role is simply too heavy for his lyric voice. Directors and managers tend to encourage vocalists to stretch beyond their given talents with sometimes disasterous results. While I like some things about Alagna, he simply does not possess a technique sound enough for the heavier roles he sings.

    What's with his makeup? He looks like he's wearing a honey blond wig and pancake about three shades too dark. Did he fail to understand the plot? Aida is supposed to be the dark one. In Egyptian art they portray themselves as bone white and the Ethiopians as coal black. Something political going on? Costume good, stage movements not so good.
    I'm avoiding the vocalism - it's so painful. He once was quite promising and his voice was very attractive. But here it is pretty bad. It's kind of grainy and mealy at once. Just no longer a pretty voice at all.
