Do you know that there are two separate regional summits happening in West Africa this weekend? It's true, and it's causing quite a stir in the region's political landscape. In one corner, we have the inaugural summit of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) taking place in Niamey, Niger on Saturday, July 6, 2024. This meeting brings together the military leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, who have formed a new regional bloc following years of individually fighting jihadists attacking their separate countries. Meanwhile, in the other corner, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is holding its own summit in Abuja, Nigeria, just a day after the AES meeting. This timing is no coincidence, as it highlights the growing divide in West African politics. The AES summit is particularly noteworthy because it marks the first joint meeting of the military leaders since they came to power.
