  • For the moment this is the last episode in our series about the liberation of the Netherlands after WW-II in 1945.
At almost the same time as the cities of The Hague and Rotterdam, the Dutch capital of Amsterdam was liberated on the 8th of May 1945 from the German occupation by Canadean troups that entered the city via the Berlage bridge. The following festivities lasted the whole summer of 1945.
For more detailed information, please listen to the spoken comments in the film itself.
The original film has been meticulously enhanced, upscaled and colorized by various software based on Artificial Intelligence.

    NEDERLANDS:

This is A.I. colorized footage plus the use of the latest A.I. video enhancer software. I must admit that the colorizer needs improvement as regards colorizing large groups of people. It is 4 years since its maker released this software (and still no white smoke)...

Back in 1991 our hockey team went to Europe and played throughout various countries. We finished our one-month tour with a weekend tournament in Den Bosch Holland. It was a wonderful time. The Dutch people were happy to see us and ever so grateful to all Canadians for our contribution during the war. Truly a memorable experience.

@@MrDaiseymay Plenty, but surprisingly 78 rpm records are often still subject to copyright. Over the years I wasted hundreds of hours trying out pre-war music only to be refused by TH-cam because of copyright. That's why I now use music from an online (payed) archive for content providers. Liberation videos are especially difficult to choose good music because it relates to war, death and destruction but also happiness about being liberated. I spent about 4 hours trying-out music for this video (and got frustrated with afore mentioned archive). Hardly anything I tried worked (to my feeling).

This video was particularly poignant to me because I recognize several of the places filmed and they look just like they did in 1945. Few except those who have also been through occupation by the Nazis know the horrors the Dutch people endured or the bravery of their resistance.

I did a holiday tour of Holland some years ago. You will not meet nicer people, we had a great time there. My Father was friends with a Dutch family that lived in my home city of Liverpool. The guys name was Henri Nauise ( not sure about the spelling, sorry ) They ran a Dutch social club here, called Holland House, the building is still there. I often think about those times, my Dad and me visiting his Dutch friends and then years later, me being on holiday in that wonderful country.

    Thanks for this wonderful series.
I am sorry to have to point out that the scene starting at 0:17 is not filmed in Amsterdam but in Haarlem. The camera is in the Grote Houtstraat and looks north towards the Grote Markt, the central square of Haarlem. On Google Streetview you can find a similar position, and you can see the resemblance with the filmed scene.
The next scene, from 0:21 till 0:23 is also from Haarlem. This is on the Grote Markt, looking west, seeing the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster in the center of the square, and behind that you can see the City Hall. The statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster was moved to a location more east on the square on September 1966.
Thanks again for all the beautiful videos, and giving us the opportunity to relive a precious past.

Although attributed to General Patton there is no record he ever said it. It appears to be a post war US far right and anti communist slogan from the 1950's that has become more widely known since being posted on social media platforms.

its a shame though, so few of the NSB members were ever punished, one o f the worst escaped to Germany and the Germans, post war, refused to extradite. Almost none of the jew hunters who worked for the nazis were punished. and, to add insult to injury, whe the few dutch jews who surived Bergen Belsen (only 18%....the lowest rate in western europe) the rigidly protestand dutch govt charged them BACK real estate taxes for their time on vacation in Germany, and refused any calls to reason or fairness.
