    Interesting about that minie ball idea...and I love that gun!!!

      Thanks!! It should work. Being a lighter bullet because its hollowed out. it might be a weaker round. But it also can hold more powder. 🤷 so we will see. When i ever do come down. i will bring it and a lot of others for you to see and shoot if you have the time.🍻

    awesome video i have an 1851 and 1861 navy originals converted i plan on using 9mm bullets 38 special cases but i still need to figure out how to drill a hollow base with a hand drill thank you!!!!! great chanel.

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you...i think you could definitely drill it with a hand drill. Use a Center finder ruler on the bullet to find center. Then with to pieces of wood clamped in a vise. drill right in the middle of where the two pieces come together. a hole a little smaller than the bullet you plan on using. That way you can hold the bullet tight without changing its shape. Then use a center punch so when you start drilling the drill bit wont walk. Come up with a depth you plan on drilling to. At that depth on the drill bit wrap tape as a depth Gage and stop. And probably best to use at least 2 drills or more. So you start drilling with a small drill and step up to the size you want. Hope this helps and thanks again.

    Snapper: Love your channel.. I have a Pietta 1851 Navy replica with a 38 Colt/38 spl. Howell conversion cylinder. Of course the barrel is still .36 caliber groove diameter. I load .38 spl cases with Hornady 148 gr .358 caliber HBWC's over 17.5 gr FFFg seated to 1.400 " OAL.(almost full chamber length) Then I dip the exposed portion of the bullets in melted 50/50 beeswax/tallow for outside lubrication. They shoot quite accurately. Don't know if the hollow base would expand to .38 but they are in all reality little full wad cutter Minne balls and readily available and no need to drill out bases or use expensive hollow base molds. Look forward to reading about your further adventures with your Thunderer Doris J

    One day you will have a Lightning.
    Will this ammunition have even lower pressure than a .41 Colt, reducing stress on the firearm as well?

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the pressure might be lower. because of such a lighter bullet. being it has a hollow base. it will be much lighter then just 38 spl normally. But it will also hold more powder. So i am not sure really.

    I think you're way way. Overthinking a simple process here bud.
    When I fire form brass for my 375 Remington ultra mag from a 300 ultra mag it put a 300 ultra mag cartridge in my 375. point it at a Target you pull the trigger. LOUD BANG out pops a 375 brass.
    You sure are fire yourself a 38 special out of your 41 magnum that's going to pop 41 brass. The questions will be too much pressure and blow your 41 colt revolver up. -- That's entire reason I watched the video to see if you could do that or if you had to download it with lower pressures.

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The main reason I went this route. I also use this same ammo in a colt 1851 navy conversion in 38 colt. (It's just 38 special cut down a little) If I fire form the brass to the 41 it would no longer fit in the 38. I also do load 41 colt and just wanted to see if I could make the 38 fit in both guns. Believe it or not, this actually worked perfectly. I have a video on the channel of me shooting this 38 through the 41. I didn't have to down load the ammo. I load it with real black powder, not modern smokeless. So the pressure is not high.

  • @The-Armed-Pacifist

    The .38 cylinder is really kind of a cheat. Maybe the title should have said through a .41 BARREL.

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you might be right. I could have shimmed the cylinder. But not wanting to make permanent changes to an antique. Plus the 38 cylinder is cheap. I have been told 38 spl brass can fire form to 41 colt. But never done it so i dont know if its true.

    50 percent chance of getting stuck inside the barrel, you don't do that.👿

    • @snappers_antique_firearms
      @snappers_antique_firearms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the concern. I am in the business and I've been doing this kind of stuff a very long time. And take all safety concerns serious. After saying that... this is a very common concept. Most rifles in the civil war used this concept. Look up the minie ball. When fired it balloons up because Of its hollow base. it will then fit the rifling. This is how most people shoot colt 51 navy conversations today. If it still has it .375 bore. They originally shot 38 Colt. It was a heal based bullet. Other then 22 rimfire. no one makes or really loads heal base bullets. So today people use hollow based bullets to shoot there 51 navy conversions. They are
      .357 bullets going down a .375 bore and because of its Hollow base it expands into the rifling. There are many factory ammos that make these loads. Since the hollow base .357 bullet works great in a .375 bore. I am trying the .357 bullet in a .386 bore. The worst thing that can happen. the bullet cant expand enough to engage the rifling. then tumble when it leaves the barrel. Making the gun lose all accuracy. It cant tumble in the barrel. Look up what happens to a bullet before it leaves the barrel. And you will see why. I hope this relieves your concerns🍻
